Mehso-so

Richard Carroll spent years in #CentralAfricanRepublic, first in the Peace Core then as a wildlife biologist and conservationist. This book is mainly his musings when first arriving there, which read as the moony drivel of an idealistic 20-something, but the surrounding material from current day Richard about the country, it‘s history and the poaching problem, are worthwhile.

BarbaraBB Interesting. Too bad it‘s just a so-so read. 2y
Librarybelle It looks like Littens‘ consensus of this book is it is just a so-so read. 2y

As I tend to start Globle with #centralafricanrepublic, I thought I ought to read the book I chose for it! #ReadingAfrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

If you are pro-poaching this may open your eyes a bit. If you're anti-, this may not be a good choice for you.

It's in need of some editing though.

jenniferw88 @AllDebooks if we want to do conservation in other countries, this may be a good intro. #naturalitsy 2y

Let‘s see how many new African countries the author can fit into this book because now we are in the #CentralAfricanRepublic #CAR (I just learned Bangui is its capitol). I do feel like this author has tried to cram every thriller trope into this novel (even the Vatican), and pretty much covered nearly as many Saharan and near Saharan countries (plus a few European countries to boot).

Pickpick

The author, already dedicated to helping the least fortunate on the planet, took a decade of her life to bring down the evil LRA operating in 4 African countries. Through sheer persistence and support from the likes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Warren Buffet‘s son Howard (a dedicated humanitarian himself), Davis achieved almost the impossible over unbelievable odds. Tutu‘s description is accurate: this a beautiful and moving account of her ⬇️

Texreader story. I hope and anticipate that she will share with the world her next story, whatever it is, which is sure to be equally human and triumphant as this one. And I‘m so proud she‘s from my hometown of San Antonio. You go girl!! I highly recommend this book. All proceeds go to her foundation to carry out more unprecedented missions like this one. Texreader The four countries where this all occurred are #Uganda, #DemocraticRepublicofCongo, #DRCongo, #DRC, #CentralAfricanRepublic, #CAR, and #SouthSudan. Thanks again for the motivation to read this through the #readingafrica2022 challenge, @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2y

Before I finish it I have to share a coincidence about this book. The author, from San Antonio, was receiving a humanitarian award for her work documented in the book. I heard her speak & bought several copies of the book. Sometime later, when husband became scout leader for our son‘s Boy Scout troop we discovered husband knows her husband and oldest son because they‘re in the troop! I‘m now trying to encourage lining her up to speak at an ⬇️

Archbishop Desmond Tutu to the author: “It‘s not that I‘m not sad. It‘s that I choose joy. Even when we‘re crying – especially when we‘re crying – we have to find joy in the world.”
