We‘ve been renovating our kitchen since we moved here which included doubling its size and adding a wall of cabinets for my collection of dishes and cookware.

Three contractors and fourteen months later: I‘ve just put the very first things inside my cabinets. What went first? My beloved cookbooks, of course! I have had most of them packed away for months and months. Now I can finally re-join the #mtcookbook fun!! #shelfie

For someone like me who wants to cook well, this cookbook is a welcome addition to my kitchen. By breaking recipes down into salt, fat, acid and heat, chef and author Samin Nosrat brings professional ideas into the home. These recipes and techniques go a long way in helping me understand good cooking philosophy and how to put it into practice. It is also beautifully illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton, adding visuals to your cooking journey.

SW-T I wasn‘t crazy about roast chicken before this book and now I make it all the time. Her book is now in my frequent use stack. 2d
Prairiegirl_reading @SW-T the roast chicken is my first thought when I think of this cookbook. It is soooo good!!! 2d

“ In a typical Malaysian meal, at least four dishes are served: A nicely balanced meal would include a soup, a curry or stir-fried dish, a vegetable or a salad, and a sambal—and steamed rice taking center stage“

(Photo of Hainese chicken rice screenshot from the book, which is over 500 pages long and contains recipes originally from various places in Asia, recreated Malaysian-style)

This book is impressive in its scope. It covers all regions of Germany and their highlighted foods. But not all of the foods they talk about have recipes in here. The font is extremely small, so it was difficult to read. The recipes are so region-specific that there are many ingredients I would not have access to in the US, so it‘s not really meant to be a cookbook. It‘s more like a history book than a cookbook, I would say.

An idealistic Ruth Reichl becomes a food critic. The growth of her writing career parallels the emergence of modern American cuisine in CA. (I recognized many of the young chefs she writes about as Top Chef judges.) At the same time as she talks food, Reichl weaves in her personal life: her father's death, extramarital affairs, the demise of her 1st marriage, moves, a failed adoption.
Overall an easy and engaging listen.
