I probably missed this end-cap display when I was at this branch last time. I know many libraries, like San Antonio Public Library, have suspended the purchase of Macmillan Publisher‘s ebooks due their new policy. I hate that this is an issue, but I‘m also proud they are taking a stand. #ebooksforall #sapl

marleed I love the SAPL! I suspended the purchase of any book from McMillan until 3 months after publishing date. As a reader, I thought it was my best way of supporting the public library. I also let B&N know of my suspended purchase - they don‘t really care about me :(. I wish it were a common response. 5y

I‘m glad my library is taking a stand against MacMillan publishing. I think it‘s greedy and disgusting that they‘re now limiting library access to their ebooks. #ebooksforall

Crazeedi Good for them, every library should do this 5y
julesG So they don't buy the ebook but still buy physical copies? Isn't that what the publisher wanted, more physical copies sold? 5y
Megabooks Good for them!! 5y

Reviewsbylola Good point. But the publisher‘s stance is that the embargo will improve their sales because instead of being able to read the ebook from the library, readers will purchase the ebooks themselves. I think it would be a bit much personally to stop providing the books all together since, as far as I know, there‘s no limit on how many physical books libraries can purchase. @julesG 5y
julesG @Reviewsbylola See. It's a win for the publishers no matter what the library decides to do. And that's what annoys me the most about this embargo. 5y
Reviewsbylola I agree. Clearly they don‘t care and will continue to do what they want. That said, the embargo is only for the first 8 weeks of publication so it will hurt them when the libraries don‘t purchase additional copies after the 8 week mark. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. @julesG 5y
Bookzombie My library has also suspended the purchase of ebooks published by Macmillan. 5y
britt_brooke Nashville Public Library has done this, too, and I 100% support it! Screw MacMillan. And it‘s my understanding that even after the 8 week mark, ebook purchases will be limited. The whole thing is utter garbage and has the opposite effect on me. It makes me want to NEVER purchase a MacMillan book. 5y
britt_brooke @Bookzombie 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Mine, too. 5y
Bookzombie @britt_brooke I completely agree. San Antonio Public Library indicates they are suspending the purchase of titles until Macmillan reverses their decision or comes to the table about other options that would allow equitable access to ebooks. 5y
Mdargusch So ridiculous. 🤨 5y

Also got this message today after my one hold for an ebook was affected by this new rule that McMillan put in place. I like that my library is taking a stand against this.

LibrarianRyan So are we. You can help by signing the ALA #ebooksforall petition.

I spent a few hours today flagging my #tbr books on cloudLibrary, favoriting books on Hoopla, and tagging books on Litsy. Now it‘ll be faster to decide what to read next. #cloudlibrary #hoopla #litsy #ebooksforall #ebooks #audiobooks

Did you hear about this? How awful! I live on library ebooks and until now I have been able to read new releases the day they are published (The Institute and The Dutch House, most recently). The wait times on Overdrive are already bad - now they're going to be horrific. Really despicable, McMillan! 😠 Link to sign a petition in the comments. #mcmillan #overdrive #wplc #ebooksforall

hes7 It‘s ridiculous! ☹️ I signed the petition yesterday. 5y

Some early #MissMarple for a spooky season read. This is 13 shorter mysteries told through different characters. I read as an ebook and a YouTube audiobook. #spookyseason #mystery #agathachristie #ebooks #ebooksforall

just putting this up in case any of you haven't heard. please sign the petition if you care about libraries and access for all..I know @LibrarianRyan has also posted about it #ebooksforall

LibrarianRyan yeahhhh 5y
Taylor These publishers already started this years ago when they heavily boosted up the prices of ebooks. It kind of got swept under the rug then but...everyone acts like the big pubs care about reading culture when really all they‘re interested in is protecting hardback sales. 5y
Flaneurette @Taylor I really started using my library much more after agency pricing came about..I do still buy quite a few books in various formats but I am not much of a rereader and I can't afford to buy them all so the library makes sense for me but if waits are super long I'm just not gonna read those books 5y
Taylor @Flaneurette Yeah, I feel like this is another bad move in an attempt to get people to purchase hardbacks, and also probably to get the libraries to purchase more hardbacks so as to have more copies available. 5y

Hey all,

I don't know if you heard or not, but starting Nov 1, McMillian Publishers are putting an embargo on when/how libraries can purchase ebooks. It is totally NOT fun, as we are being blamed for their lack of ebook sales. Other publishers are also toying with the idea.

For all of you littens who love your library, or the library you use to getebooks, please consider signing the ALA petition to ensure #ebooksforall
www.EbooksForAll.org

LibrarianRyan Let me add some information. This says Libraries, but that does not mean individual libraries. It means collecting library, so if you library (like mine) has multiple libraries in a collective to offer ebook services, that collective only gets to purchase 1 copy. My Cloud Library collective has over 100 libraries in it. 1 copy for 100 libraries patrons. Our Axis 360 library has over 150 libraries. That is only 1 copy for them as well. 5y
LibrarianRyan If you think your libraries digital wait lists are too long, imagine how much worse it will be when this practice becomes a mainstay. For all my Sci-Fi loving friends, the biggest name in Sci-Fi publishing is TOR, and TOR is part of Macmillian. We WILL BE EFFECTED! 5y

LaraS UUUGGGHHHH the digital restrictions publisher have put on libraries since the dawn of ebooks have been nothing short of despicable. Thanks for posting to bring awareness!! 5y
Hooked_on_books Signed! Thanks for posting. 5y
Scochrane26 My book buying habits are about the same no matter what format. I almost always do library first. This would just cause me to read less, I guess, or wait for a physical copy at library. I understand that publishers want $, but this isn‘t best way to do it. 5y
DGRachel Already signed! This makes me sad and angry and I don‘t even rely on my library for ebooks. I can‘t imagine how much worse it is for patrons who do. 5y

sarahs.thoughts.on.books Just read the comment about collecting libraries. Over the last few years I've been happy that public libraries in my state only require that I love in it to get a library card to that library system. So I'm a patron of 5 different local public library systems, and have been lucky to either get on multiple waitlists for a popular book, or found a specific book in one library's collection that weren't in others 5y
fandom_hellspawn99 Signed and tweeted! When I first heard about this I couldn't find the petition, so I'm glad you posted the link! 5y
