Going to disappear into this book for as long as kids' naps will allow. I'm watching my 2 grandsons and even though they've been perfect and napping close to schedule, mom thinks I'm not following her rules close enough.... It's a wonder her and her 3 siblings survived... #frustrated #notgoodenough #ilovemygrandkids #lovingdaisy

Lynnsoprano We didn‘t know anything, did we? 😂 5y
Djspens @Lynnsoprano Nope... Her 4 month old is struggling with a sleep schedule, all 4 of mine slept all night by 4 weeks.... But she refuses to ask for advice 🤷🏻‍♀️ smh 5y

Are you guys a mood reader and how much does it affect your reading? Like I have been looking forward to reading Two Dark Reigns for months and now that I have it I‘m basically forcing myself to pick it up which I don‘t want to do. So frustrating so I keep grabbing other books instead 🙈

CouronneDhiver I‘m a mood reader and, therefore, DNF stuff all the time. 6y

I don't know why I just can't get into this book! It has been almost one month now. Frustrating because I really enjoyed her previous book 😔

Arghhh, my list of hold items at library is getting longer. 21 items are still not ready yet!
⁉ Feeling #frustrated 😣
#holditems

FeatherV Ugh I hate when that happens, and then they all become ready at once and it‘s overwhelming! 6y
thereadingowlvina @FeatherV Yes! I couldn't agree with you more 😁 6y

Purdah is a form of female seclusion & covering up, put simply. The husband here has convinced the wife to observe purdah & the wife thinks this is to spice up the marriage. Lolsob. When Rushdie shows restraint in his prose & stops trying to take us on a magic carpet ride with each sentence, he is a keen observer of the heartbreaking absurdity that underlies even our closest relationships. I prefer when he tones it down #thesatanicversesbuddyread

batsy I feel like I should apologise to my fellow buddy readers because I know I've gone from LOVE to UGH HATE and now lord knows what my emotional temperature is with this book. 7y
twohectobooks Haha have you read any other Rushdie? 7y
saresmoore I found this section to be interesting, too. I do like what he's saying by way of allegorical innuendo, but I am staying firmly in the camp of HATE in the way he's choosing to say it. 7y

LeahBergen I liked this section, too. 7y
batsy @twohectobooks Only The Moor's Last Sigh and I think I blundered my way through Enchantress of Florence before bailing 😳 7y
twohectobooks Hm, I haven't read either of those. I asked mainly because I read Midnight's Children and his poetic prose and sense of humour were used to such good effect in that. I don't remember how well it compares to Satanic Verses though, because I read that in high school and I didn't really "get it" (picked it up because of the title). 7y
batsy @twohectobooks I might be tempted to give MC a go after I recover from this one 😀 I think sometimes his prose lapses into indulgence; the book starts off strong & I loved the playfulness, then midway when I feel like readers could use some grounding (& guidance!), he's gone off on flights of fancy. But the new section I've started is comparatively understated & funny. A lot of it goes over my head too; some knowledge of Islam will help I think. 7y
twohectobooks Almost certainly! I had basically zero knowledge of Islam in high school and then when my book club read the book a couple years ago I didn't have time to reread so what I've learned since hasn't been pointed at this book. 7y
Sydsavvy I love your Lolsob comment. 7y
batsy @Sydsavvy It's a book that frequently elicits that reaction 😁 7y
Sydsavvy Oh yes!!! It's so odd, I actually enjoyed part 1. I didn't have enough background in that faith to understand the problem with part 2, though I understand it's a huge problem to make Mohammad just a man. Part 3 just seems delved into the nonsensical, though I liked the allegory of the goat/immigrant and I liked the story within the story. But Rushdie has worked me into the same #frustrated corner as I was in with Midnight's Children. Circles. (edited) 7y
batsy @Sydsavvy Circles indeed. There is quite a lot of pleasure from his prose, for me, but the too-muchness of it is exhausting. From my bare-bones "research" I learned that the name "Mahound" for Muhammad is a really derogatory one, used by Christians in Medieval times (and in later times too) to denigrate Islam as a false religion, so that's a huge part of the controversy. 7y
Sydsavvy Ooooh! Now That's so important to know! I can't help but think this: 1) Rushdie was challenging a response; but 2) even if he thought he knew what he would get, he could not have known what it would be like, or the UK's unpreparedness or ultimate house arrest response. He's amazing; he's entirely frustrating. I just got through reading the section that invoked your LOLsad response and that was exactly right. 7y
batsy @Sydsavvy Yes! I think you're spot on re: what he was getting into yet not quite knowing or being prepared for political implications and fall out. "He's amazing; he's entirely frustrating" -- agreed. 7y

Y'all, this is the final book in the series and I'm a quarter of the way through and I'm just bored and disinterested. Do I keep pushing for another 450 pages? Does it pick up? I'd hate to DNF the third in a trilogy but I am feeling nothing so far!! #frustrated

ReadingSusan I loved the book. But I also have a 150 rule. If I don't like it after 150 pages and don't care what happens I DNF it. 7y
hyacinth DNF and treat yourself to reading another book 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I haven't read it... *but* maybe read the last chapter? And decide from there... 7y
angrylilasian I just finished it and loved it! I thought it was the best one in the series. It was a little slow at first but then it picked up and I couldn't put it down. 7y
StaceyKondla I found this one slower than the first two and more heartbreaking, but it was a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. It's worth finishing and the character growth is very well done. 7y
