A Theory of Haunting | Sarah Monette

so-so

If the writing wasn‘t so good, this would be a Pan. Descriptions and sentiments are wonderful, but the story is a mess of extraneous details irrelevant to the plot, too many meaningless background characters, and a useless protagonist. Confusing without being mysterious, ending did not feel earned.

BallroomsOfMars What about the missing pages from the folder! The row of hidden books! Maybe I missed all the important links — I was reading at 3am during a few sleepless nights — but it did seem like a lot of stuff got attention on the page that ended up having no follow-through or consequence. 5d

Funeral Songs for Dying Girls | Cherie Dimaline

I found this very cool offering in a local free puzzle library (!!!) and did most of it while I listened to FUNERAL SONGS FOR DYING GIRLS. Alas, it‘s the first Cherie Dimaline novel I‘ve disliked. It offers up some intriguing threads, but the story as a whole fails to satisfying and the prose is so performatively purple that it shut me out of the emotions instead of placing me inside them. Sigh. #audiopuzzling

Someone had dropped off a box of puzzles not too long before I got there, but they didn‘t put them in the library for some reason so I took care of it for them. 5d
