The Dead Romantics
The Dead Romantics | Ashley Poston
A disillusioned millennial ghostwriter who, quite literally, has some ghosts of her own, has to find her way back home in this sparkling adult debut from national bestselling author Ashley Poston. Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problemafter a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love. Its as good as dead. When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won't give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye. But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father. For ten years, she's run from the town that never understood her, and even though she misses the sound of a warm Southern night and her eccentric, loving family and their funeral parlor, she cant bring herself to stay. Even with her father gone, it feels like nothing in this town has changed. And she hates it. Until she finds a ghost standing at the funeral parlors front door, just as broad and infuriatingly handsome as ever, and hes just as confused about why hes there as she is. Romance is most certainly dead . . . but so is her new editor, and his unfinished business will have her second-guessing everything shes ever known about love stories.

If you‘re looking for a Halloween read that‘s more cozy than scary, give this ghostly rom-com a try! It‘s quirky and sweet, but also explores heavier themes of grief and mortality. I wasn‘t able to predict where this was going and was genuinely surprised by one twist! 🎧

Florence Day is a ghost writer who can see/talk to ghosts. The book starts off with Florence having a really bad day. Her new editor denied her an extension for her deadline, she ran into her ex at a bar, and she got a call that her dad died. She goes back home for the funeral and runs into a familiar ghost, her editor. There was so much to love about this book.

Perfect light romance for Halloween season! Sweet, ghostly, funny, and fun. Lots of book/author references. The mc is an author (well, ghostwriter lol).

I absolutely loved this sweet romance novel, which celebrates death and a life well-lived as much as true love. Genuinely managed to surprise me, in a good way.

I devoured this book. I thought it was original and it definitely made my heart happy. Not your typical rom-com in the fact that the characters are dealing with grief (and the fact that the main guy is a ghost). Their interactions and conversations are meaningful and even though he is a ghost you find yourself rooting for this couple. I won‘t give away the ending but I am happy to say I was smiling at the end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ooo I really liked this. I expected to, as I LOVED the Once upon a con series by the same author. I loved the setting of the publishing industry and the writers insights… there were lots of little nuggets and Easter eggs for fans of books, particularly romance. I really loved Florence and Ben and went through ALL the feels, with twists I did not expect and that nearly broke me 😂 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ thank you to NetGalley for the digital review copy!

So, three hours into this book and I find Florence and her special specialness mildly annoying and unpleasant but at least there‘s ghost stuff happening …

If, like me (and many of my generation), you grew up obsessively watching My Girl on repeat, The Dead Romantics should hit you *just right.*

Though the death-business puns got a bit repetitive (like beating a dead horse), there was so much else to love in this novel that I hardly cared. Sweet, softly (quietly) sexy, sad, hopeful, and surprising, this book did my spooky little heart good. 🖤👻💗

Okay, book review catch up time!

Light pick - I liked this one but thought it fell a little bit short in execution. The female MC had a few too many quirks: romance ghost writer with writer‘s block, can see ghosts, grew up in a funeral home, recently deceased father was an undertaker, ex-boyfriend stole her life story as the plot of his new book, AND she‘s falling in love with her new book editor who ALSO happens to be a ghost.

Kimberlone Crazily enough, none of the above is really a spoiler since all of those plot points are revealed within the first few chapters. You‘d think this book would be really exciting given all that craziness, but actually the plot mostly revolves around the MC just getting over her writer‘s block? 1mo
Reggie Lol, that does sound like a lot. 1mo

I wanted to like this book, but the characters were flat, the language repetitive, and there was too little ‘talking to ghosts‘ that weren‘t Benji for my liking. The exploration of grief was really good, though, and the casual queerness in the side characters. 2 ⭐️

monalyisha I agree that I would‘ve liked more ghost communique! I could see this becoming a series, and that aspect being punched up a bit…but I don‘t actually think it will be one. 1mo
MsRadioSilence @monalyisha yeah, she set it up like most romance novels where we COULD get a sequel with the best friend/sister, but there wouldn‘t be that ghost element bc its been established how Florence is the only one who can see them 1mo
monalyisha Maybe the sequel could be from a new ghost‘s perspective? It could be reliving/retelling the great romance of the ghost‘s life — and finding closure with Florence. 1mo

Does anyone else remember that show Pushing Daisies? This had the same vibes - quirky and fun with a little ribbon of sadness threaded throughout. And that unique pining feeling from not being able to touch the person you like. I loved Florence and Benji's chemistry and especially adored the atmosphere of Florence's funeral parlor family home. Add in delightful conversations about books, romance in particular, and this one had me hooked #LMPBC

This premise was normally outside of my normal genre and the 2nd paranormal romance I've read. It consistently stayed a 3 star for me until the last 30 pages when I felt I could exhale the breath I didn't know I was holding and got the extra star.

(I'm back here after a year!)
The Dead Romantics is a swoony, heartfelt, wholesome, and unique romance story.
Poston does a fab job of writing the literary world of Florence who is a ghostwriter and Benji, her editor, with nods to the Greats of the romance world.
The romance, the pining, the slow-burn were perfect.
I loved everything about it, but I'm particularly in awe of the storytelling. Many people write books, but few are great storytellers.

I was not looking forward to this book. I need to read 2 romances for my genre fiction class. I used to ❤️ romances in my teens and twenties but haven‘t read one in about 20 years. So a contemporary meet cute was not on my #TBR,
This was a delightful surprise. I found myself flagging lines. I may be a convert.
At p170 I had that aha moment when I realized how this was going to have a happy ending, but there were still a surprise or 2 for me. 👍🏻

Ruthiella I love happy surprises like that. It reminds me why it‘s usually a good idea to challenge oneself from time to time! 2mo

This is a cute story, and Florence Day must have been a fun character to develop. She returns to her small hometown from NYC making it almost perfect for a Hallmark Mystery movie. She sees dead people and ironically works as a ghost writer. There‘s an ex to dislike, a family to love, a ghost seemingly gone to soon, a nod to the gay community, and references to all sorts of authors. It‘s a super easy read that‘s good for the pallet.

A cute supernatural romance novel about a struggling ghostwriter returning home for her father's funeral and finding that her new (all too handsom) editor has come to her as a ghost. It dragged on a bit at times, particularly the beginning and ending, but once I got into the story I really enjoyed it.
