My #weirdwords of the day is the title of Dickens' novel. Legislation was recently passed in my R state that at the end of the calendar year, PTO exceeding 40 hrs will be automatically deposited into the company FML account. Problem is: several employees (including myself) maxed out their FML account years ago, but as we all know Rs don't want to interfere im business 🤬 Anywho, as difficult as it was to find a FULL week off the week before (CONT)

vivastory Thanksgiving I plan on taking a fill week off. Just checked my PTO and it appears as of today I have nearly 100 hours... which thanks to the new state law if I didn't use it before the end of the yr, I'd lose 75 hours (figuring in what I'd accumulate before the end of 2025) As someone who is a supervisor in a department that is responsible for appointments, it's pretty hard to find a full week off.My #greatexpectations for my PTO is to (Cont) 4d
vivastory go book shopping, go to the movies, take myself out for lunch and read read read. Not a weird word, but a weird situation & our political situation could give Dickens a run for his money @cbee (edited) 4d
AnnCrystal How do they calculate and weigh these decisions? 🥺💫. 4d

Leftcoastzen This country! I know many people with use it or lose it . But not enough staff so how can you use it ? 😡 4d
Lesliereadsalot Congrats on figuring out what‘s owed you. They don‘t make it easy! 4d
Suet624 I can‘t believe they made it a state law! I can imagine a company making it their policy, but for the state to require it is nuts 16h

#WhatTheDickens

We stayed at The Parker House in Boston this weekend. They have an historical display in their basement. Ho Chi Minh was a pastry chef there from 1911 -1913! Lots of Kennedy connections and Dickens stayed there!!! Such a cool hotel on the Freedom trail and so close to Boston Commons. (This is not a sponsored post lol) @Texreader

Amiable Love that hotel — great location! We stayed there once when my boys were little and heard the stories about the famous guests, including Dickens. Later my youngest son (maybe 6 at the time) told his grandpa that we‘d stayed at a hotel where “you can see the ghost of Dick Cheney!” 😄 4mo

This short book packed a punch. About the last white man on an island in Papua New Guinea in the time of a Civil War. He teaches the local students about the power of literature using Great Expectations. A tough but good read. #ReadingOceania2024

Librarybelle Yay for short books! 14mo
BarbaraBB I remember enjoying this one too. 14mo

I liked this, but I think I either needed more context for the historical aspect than the few minutes of online reading I did or more love for Great Expectations to truly appreciate it.

BkClubCare Oh! One of my favorites 2y
Librarybelle Good to know about the context and how helpful it would be to have some knowledge of Great Expectations! 2y
Daisey @BkClubCare Do you love Great Expectations or Dickens in general? I feel like that would have made this more impactful for me. (edited) 2y
BkClubCare @Daisey - not sure if I have truly read Great Expectations or just “know” the story, and I like Dickens well enough. Can‘t remember why I enjoyed this one so much but I did. Years ago 😊 2y

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

#readingoceania2024 #Papuanewguinea A story about the inspiration of teachers and their ability to open horizons through the love of a good book, in this case Great Expectations. However, set in the middle of an horrific and brutal civil war. Moving read.

Librarybelle Nice photo! 2y
BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one too. Can‘t remember the setting in Papua New Guinea or I would have saved it for the challenge 😀 2y
Currey @BarbaraBB Yes, the author never actually mentions the name Papua New Guinea but he does names the towns, the cooper mines, and the civil war 2y
BarbaraBB Clever choice!! 2y
