pickA short paperback I picked up years ago because of the illustrations by Wesley Dennis. Enjoyable but not groundbreaking, a story about Exterminator, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1918, despite being virtually an unknown. However, my camera wanted to focus more on Robert Plant in the background than the cover of the book. You'll have that 😂

pickNot the tagged book, but by the same author. This horse story has languished on my shelves for decades, and I'm not sure why I've never read it. Published (and set) during the Korean War, a young man leaves for the armed forces. His younger brother, who has a club foot and is ineligible to fight, stays behind and raises the colt they're convinced can be a champion harness racer. While fairly typical horse book fare, I still really enjoyed this ⬇
pickI always snatch up these Famous Horse Stories if I find them in antique shops. Published mostly in the 50s, they're pretty typical MG/YA horse stories from that era. This one is part of a series about kids who live in a ranch in Idaho and their interactions with a wild horse band led by (of course) a magnificent black stallion named King. In this volume, a man claiming to be King's true owner appears and a lot of this story was actually about ⬇

I did very well for my #joysofJune goals. I successfully kept up with all three serial reads, read the one main physical book, and 3 audiobooks with the physical read to speed up the tempo on two (kingdom of copper, and the black stallion). I hope that momentum can keep up so I can have even more TBR items on my July list. 🥰
so-so3✨ Alec loves his black stallion “the black”. Unfortunately, the rightful owners of his horse come to claim him. Heartbroken Alec and others go to The Blacks rightful home to see if they can get him back. There is a lot of action in this story. It was a fun read.
