Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A story of knowing what you don‘t want, rather than what you do. Three generations of tough, somewhat shunned, women, all unique in their strengths. Dorothy, aka Donkey, steals the show. I loved the symbolism of the rattler. An ouroboros; the circle of life. I picked this up after hearing Campbell speak at Southern Festival of Books. She‘s so sharp and funny! Meeting her was an absolute pleasure. Will def read more from her!

Mehso-so

This has everything I usually love in a book…and yet, I didn‘t love it. I have no idea why really. Wrong timing? I know nothing about Our Town, the play the story centres around (but I never want to read about Emily or the Stage Manager again), I felt nothing much for the characters and just felt distanced from the whole thing. In fact I nearly gave up. The last 50 pages or so kind of won me round but I still feel ambivalent.

Campbell is a new-to-me author, and hearing her speak was such a treat, I had to buy her newest and meet her. She‘s a whole vibe and I love it!

LeahBergen Nice! 🫏 7d
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Her donkey stamp is the best! She was a real trip to hear speak. So funny and smart, too. A whole vibe! Have you read any of her books? I‘m in the middle of this one now. 6d
LeahBergen I haven‘t but I‘ve eyed this one 6d
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Looks good! I‘m impressed with her writing. Definitely planning to read more of her! 6d

Pickpick

Just the kind of book I love for October and while it had some good twists, I called the who pretty early on. The how and why was fun to see unravel, though.

Another of my #trappedinaspookyhouse reads, chosen for me by @GHABI4ROSES and organized by @PuddleJumper

Mehso-so

I know that Elizabeth Strout won the Pulitzer Prize and is a great author, but I found this book super bland and boring. I enjoy books that are people stories with little plot, but this was just… so dull to me. For those who like her, can you explain why? I don‘t mean that in a snarky way; I genuinely want to understand who to recommend her books to when my store opens. Thanks!

BkClubCare It‘s okay, we don‘t all have to like the same books; we all can find different styles/messages to relate to. I happen to be one who absolutely “fangirl”s Strout and it started with Olive Kittridge. I don‘t think this would be the best of her books to start with, perhaps, but everyone‘s experience may vary. I love her characters, the introspection, the sly humor. I think Strout is an amazing writer - whatever chord she strikes, it vibrates! 💗 2w
Lesliereadsalot I love her books because of the character development that flows from book to book. I can live without plot as the characters come to life for me. Also recommend Shannon Bowring to these customers. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I also found it pretty meh. I think Strout gets super hyped up in my circles and she just cannot live up to that. It has been years for me but I wrote - it is well written with good flow but boring and I felt zero connection to caring for these characters. I guess I am not the right person to answer this 😂 2w

willaful It didn't do all that much for me either. Different strokes... 2w
MrsMalaprop Originally read Olive K and loved it. Stayed away from the Lucy Bartons because of all the negative reviews. Then had to read one for book club and I fell in love with them. Have now read them all including the latest. As to why I love them, I‘m not sure. I don‘t generally do book series, but these books are like a warm blanket. So comforting and cosy, examining humans in all their frailty. Maybe it‘s because, at 53, I‘m an old lady now myself 😆. 2w
Readerann So interesting to read these comments. I‘m in the “not a fan” camp. Different strokes… 2w
jewright It‘s the character development for me. She feels very real. I also like a slower book sometimes because I don‘t always have a ton of time to read, so it‘s nice to have something I‘m not in a rush to find out the ending. 2w
LiteraryinPA Thank you sooo much for weighing in! I really appreciate the perspective. @BkClubCare @Lesliereadsalot @ChaoticMissAdventures @willaful @MrsMalaprop @Readerann @jewright 2w
emmasm08 I‘m a fan ! I just love her characters - and her books are about life ! With its highs and lows ! 1w

Last night my library hosted an author program which featured Wade Rouse, aka Viola Shipman! 💕📚 I got to run the whole thing which included facilitating the event, handling the Q&A portion, and the best part of all - getting to go out to dinner beforehand with him and his lovely husband! It was an absolutely magical evening!
