It‘s been rough mentally for me lately as it has been for many. Just trying to get through the days without breaking down. With all of that reading has been tough for me. I‘ve been slowly working my way through the tagged book. It‘s good and I enjoy it when I do get to it.
Mostly I‘ve been listening to a podcast ‘Southern Gothic‘. I listen for the majority of the day while I work.
Drink your water, take your meds, and hold the line.

This is one of my favorite books & I try to reread it every few years. It starts in Switzerland in 1902, when Marta is 12. She is forced to drop out of school by her abusive father. She has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge & is very ambitious. She eventually ends up in California with her husband & children, & we follow the story of her daughter, Hildemara. Book 2 continues the story of her granddaughter, Carolyn. 5⭐️ Highly recommend.

#AuldLangSpine @JamieArc @monalyisha
This is my third Ann Patchett, and like the other two that involved semi-utopias cut off or estranged from the outside world (e.g., opera hostages or Amazonian tribe/scientists), Tom Lake features two: a Michigan cherry farm during the pandemic and a theater community by the lake of the title. There's always trouble threatening paradise, but unlike most of her literary peers...👇

Billypar ...Patchett seems to draw more energy from the warm moments than the tragic ones. At times, I wondered if it would be too much, but it mostly wasn't. The scenes were genuinely sweet because the characters were so lifelike and real. And even though I'm not quite as old as the lead and don't have 3 daughters on a cherry farm, I sympathized with how much she preferred her simple life to her brush with celebrity as a young woman. 2w
Billypar Thanks for recommending this, Jamie! 2w

Reggie I think about the daughter Emily and her life decisions a lot. Great review. 2w
Billypar @sarahbarnes Thanks - hope you enjoy if you pick it up! 2w
Billypar @CarolynM Thanks! 🙂 2w
Billypar @Reggie Yeah, I found the part in the middle when she talked about her and her fiance's decision really powerful, especially with the fate of the farm mixed in. 2w

I didn‘t feel this book was as cohesive as it could be. I felt there was a lot going on between issues in the mothers life and issues in the daughters life. Everything connects in the end but I kinda just felt pulled all over the place. It was still an entertaining and easy read though.

I took the day off work and cleaned my house and had a smidge of this story left so opened a new Lego set to get to the end. What could this be? I loved listening to Meryl Streep tell the story of Tom Lake ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

TheBookHippie I can‘t wait to see how long your holiday card takes to get to you 🤪😅😵‍💫🎉🤷🏻‍♀️😂 2w

Off to Newcastle for food and shopping 🤍

I bought my kindle to read Greta and Valdin on the train but I can‘t stop listening to the tagged book.

Amiable My family thinks I‘m weird, but I love traveling by train! I used to commute to work on the train before the pandemic. And whenever we visit our son in Baltimore, I insist on the train. That‘s one of the things I love about Europe—more trains than the U.S.! 🙂 3w
TheKidUpstairs @Amiable I agree! Train travel is the best travel 🚄 3w
Amiable @TheKidUpstairs Yes! When it works, that is. Amtrak is either really, really good or completely horrible. There doesn‘t seem to be a middle ground. 😖😀 My husband and I traveled around Belgium and the Netherlands by train several years ago, and we were amazed that everything kept on schedule! We‘re going to Scotland in April and planning to get around there by train, too. 🤞🏼 3w

BarbaraBB I love train travel too! But it‘s so slooooow in the US @Amiable @TheKidUpstairs I traveled by Amtrak from Salt Lake City to Chicago a few years ago and it took forever because the train never picked up speed! Still loved it though, scenery was amazing 🥰 (edited) 3w
BarbaraBB Enjoy your trip Katie, I haven‘t heard of the tagged book! 3w
squirrelbrain Have a great time! 3w
TheKidUpstairs @Amiable @BarbaraBB it's true, North American train travel doesn't quite live up to the accessibility of other places, but it's still a lovely way to travel. One of my dream trips is to take the train from Toronto across country to Vancouver! 3w
TheKidUpstairs The tagged sounds really good, I'm stacking it. I hope you do get to Greta and Valdin, too, though - it was one of my absolute favourites last year! 3w
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs That sounds awesome. I‘s want to make another trip by train across the US. But I might wait for another 4 years 3w
Cathythoughts Sounds like a good day ♥️ 3w
youneverarrived @Amiable I love travelling by train too. It‘s been a good few years since I‘ve done a train journey on my own. The trains I travelled on in the US were slower but had no problems with them - I imagine it‘s different actually using them regularly though. The best place I‘ve been to for train travel was Switzerland - so scenic and always on time. Scotland is lovely I hope you enjoy your time there in April. 2w
youneverarrived @BarbaraBB thank you! I don‘t remember how I heard about it but I‘m glad I did. 2w
youneverarrived @Cathythoughts it was so nice to just be ‘me‘ for a day 🥰 2w
youneverarrived @TheKidUpstairs I think you would like it. I read Greta and Valdin on the way back. I‘m halfway through and loving it. 2w
