3/5⭐ The description implies it's a love story, but it's really not. This book takes place during the decline/assimilation of Jewish culture in Kaifeng, China in the 1800s & the tensions that result. The afterword about the historical context is helpful. There's a common theme throughout of sadness vs happiness that I found thoughtful. The midpoint takes a wild turn that I didn't think fit with the tone of what came before or after. #buzzwordathon

I loved The Good Earth, and I was really excited to read the next book in the series for #FoodAndLit #China

I didn‘t love it though. Oh well. I might try the third one because I‘ve heard that‘s better, but this one was way too long and didn‘t have the storytelling magic the first one had.

Texreader Glad I‘ve made the decision to stop after book 1 2y

Today‘s adventure in Chinese tea. #FoodAndLit #China

Bookwormjillk Update- I love this! Tastes just like when I used to go out for Chinese Food with my Grandmother. 2y
DivineDiana This is fantastic! My sisters and I were just talking about the tea that we would have in Chinese restaurants! Where did you find this tea? 2y
Bookwormjillk @DivineDiana Amazon! It took a month to get here and looked like a truck had backed over it but the taste is right! 2y
DivineDiana Thank you! 🫖 2y

I have too many choices for #China for #foodandlit this month, all in my kindle library. I‘ll start with the tagged book and hope I might get to one or two more. Any favorites here?

WorldsOkayestStepMom I loved The Good Earth! And I have A Single Swallow on my Kindle tbr too. 2y
Tamra The Good Earth was a wonderful reading experience - I think I‘ve read it twice. 2y
Amiable I second @WorldsOkayestStepMom -I too loved “The Good Earth” 2y
Texreader @WorldsOkayestStepMom @Tamra @Amiable Y‘all have convinced me to read The Good Earth first. So I‘ve bought the audiobook to read when I finish the one I‘m listening to now. Thanks for the recommendation!! 2y

A quite good Second World War story from Pear S. Buck. But again, somehow I could not feel the deepness of the situation.

By this far this is my least favourite Pearl S. Buck novel I have read. I didn't really feel the deepness of the story and the love. However, I did not know anything about the Jewish community in Chine, so I am glad I read it.

Pearl S. Buck again. It was a really really good story about a woman who try to balance between old Chinese tradition and the West world.

This was again an amazing Pearl S. Buck novel. It is so sad the people barely know her.
This time based on true historic events. However Cixi is not a likebale character at all she is very clever and strong. I loved it.
