This book. 💕 Rylie‘s story begins with the question: boy or girl. The answer: both. As a gender fluid teen, Rylie is desperate to fit in or, better yet, go unnoticed. When that doesn‘t happen, it is a struggle to keep everything bottled up inside. I loved this story—it is funny, real, heartbreaking, and even though I don‘t identify with Rylie‘s gender identity, I identified with Rylie‘s human experience.

Lily and Dunkin | Donna Gephart

My librarian asked me to read this book to help determine whether we should keep it on our shelves (Davis County, Utah can be pretty conservative). Absolutely we should keep this on the shelf. Knowing that my state ranks highest in teen suicides, I think it‘s important that ALL students are reflected in what they read, and that they know they are loved. This was a cute story about being true to yourself.

Reggie I forgot where in Utah it is but it is a house where kids whose parents have died of suicide go to get therapy. It was featured on the podcast This American Life. The kids stay until they themselves feel like they don‘t need it anymore. A lot of them felt they made connections with other kids who understood what they were going through. Other kids would at school would say stuff like you know your parent is in hell, right? The house has a volcano 6y

Reggie Room that is made out of nerf material where they can get as angry as they want and hit walls and scream for as long as they want. (Doesn‘t every school need this room?) The thing that killed me was that some of the kids who went there were 3-4yo‘s. Anyways, sorry this was a little off topic but I‘m glad you kept the book in, also. 6y

So I have been in a terrible slump lately...I only read three and a half books in April and three of those were professional books... BUT my librarian and I have designed a challenge for our students to read diverse books, and these are her first couple of recs (I want to read as many as I can over the summer so that I will have a treasure trove of book recs for students participating). I‘m finally feeling excited about reading again! #ReadDiverse

ScrappyMags I don‘t but ya know the quickest way to get kids to read?? Ban the books. Colleagues and admins were always vetoing my suggestions. I casually told my students in class. I‘d guess about 80% of the class read the book. Lol!! I wound up with about 50 high schoolers staying after school to discuss the book! Sorry. Not sorry. #readdiverse 6y

Chrissyreadit Anyone who is truly in education will fight book banning of any kind. I think publishers are recognizing that diversity is the way to go. Our children deserve to have good writers and good stories that support becoming great adults. 6y

ScrappyMags @Chrissyreadit FYI believe me we fight the banning and advocate for the Books. You learn to pick your battles. We don‘t have unions here in NC. The loudest protesters somehow lose their jobs. I choose to motivate and empower my students to think for themselves and engage in critical thinking and that happens by stepping into uncomfortable books. Because i build relationships with my students and genuinely CARE, they read. They actually read! 💗💗 6y

MicheleinPhilly These “boycotts” always make me 🙄 because first of all, Scholastic isn‘t going to change anything and as @ScrappyMags said, the quickest way to ensure kids want to read something is to tell them they can‘t. 6y
