All the discussion of slang in today's chapter reminded me of this article from 2019. It's not necessarily related to the book, but I found it interesting. My brain goes down weird rabbit holes sometimes. 🙃

TheBookHippie I‘m a rabbit hole queen! We were just talking about the French language at school with the teachers. 2d
Cuilin Interesting. (It reminded me of Cockney rhyming slang.) I love disappearing down a rabbit hole and starting a new fixation. 🤦‍♀️ 2d
lil1inblue @cuilin @thebookhippie I'm fascinated by the evolution and blending of languages, so anything that even borders on that will send me down the rabbit hole. 🙃 Slang origins can be particularly intriguing. 🤓 1d

Interesting- in the same day I came upon the same French phrase!
“Entre chien et loup “ - literally between dog and wolf- it means evening.
I‘m reading the Languedoc Trilogy in advance to my trip to SE France ?? (Toulouse, Figeac, & Béduer) since the books are based in that area & Carcassonne.
This phrase is in Book 2- Sepulchre
I‘m lucky to travel, but these travels will make me even further behind on #ReadLesMis

tpixie I insist on reading the book itself & cannot imagine lugging this heavy book on the plane. Dare I buy a second book, tear out some pages, and take with me? Then copy over my notes? 😂 I guess I could actually do that with my ebook, just not as easily… 4d
Cuilin 2009 I got to see the fireworks on Bastille day over the castle in Carcassone. It is a beautiful fully walled city. I hope you get to see it!! oh, I like the idea of using a secondhand book!! 4d
dabbe I thought the same when going to Canada. I just couldn't lug the 5+ pound tome on the plane ... and then I got behind and just got caught back up. 😂 4d

TheBookHippie Oh I‘d get a used copy and take it apart then put it back 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏼👀🫣 4d
Lcsmcat There‘s a novel by that name, by Irene Némirovsky , but I don‘t know if it‘s been translated into English. It‘s not in the Litsy data base. 4d
charl08 I've scanned pages from a travel guide before when I was only going to one area (and the book was a brick). Not sure if reading a photocopy would be worse than an e book though? 3d
tpixie @Cuilin oh! What a unique experience! I bet that was magical 💙🤍❤️ 3d
tpixie @dabbe yes! I‘m so behind!! 3d
tpixie @Lcsmcat Oh! I‘ve read her Suite Française. Her personal story is fascinating. 3d
tpixie @charl08 ohh that‘s an idea! I could copy it at work for free…. @TheBookHippie I did find one for 9.50 on Amazon. I‘m tempted… 3d
Lcsmcat @tpixie Yes! That was my introduction to her. I then read everything I could find. My old library had a huge foreign language section so even works that hadn‘t yet been translated were available to me. 3d
tpixie @Lcsmcat amazing! You really are fluent!! What a great library! 3d

“Monsieur complains?”
“About you!” said the pedestrian.
“The bureau is closed,” said Gavroche. “I‘m receiving no more complaints.”

I think I‘m a chapter behind, but this chapter 1 of book 6 is fabulous !!! ❤️Gavroche

TheBookHippie From now til the end of the book- last time I adored. It‘s so much fun to reread and catch more! 4d
dabbe I adore him, too! 💙🤍♥️ 4d

I‘m still terribly behind, but at least I‘m in July and not June.
Love this quote about Monsieur Mabeuf.
“Like everyone else, he had his own - ist ending. … He was neither a royalist, a Bonapartist…..
- he was a book-specialist!

tpixie @TheBookHippie Yes!!! 💙🤍❤️. lol I‘m still in mid June, but hoping I get some reading in today & tomorrow while my youngest daughter & her 5 kids are at school/daycare. I‘m visiting helping them because her husband has had knee surgery (#3 @32yo!!) . Today‘s first day of school. Now I wish I took off next week too because I don‘t see how they‘re going to do it. He still is doing too much. ❤️‍🩹 4w
TheBookHippie @tpixie oh that is rough. My sister in love is having #2 she‘s only 47 ! Its recovery is awful. 4w
dabbe 💙🤍♥️ 4w
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes! I suspect especially in young people because they still have so many child and Work obligations. As opposed to a retiree with a total knee…. Retirees are busy, but usually don‘t have a gazillion people living with them needing them. (edited) 4w

(Also, since it's #wdncw: We do not care that we highlighted almost the entirety of today's chapter.)

tpixie @lil1inblue @TheBookHippie @dabbe so far Book Seven is confusing me. Or I‘m not getting the reason of this tangent yet. I do know Hugo loves to go on tangents… 5d
TheBookHippie @tpixie he loves a good long nothing to do with what we‘re reading tangent …that four chapters later you go OHHHHHH. I do know the second time through I‘m catching a ton more. 5d
dabbe @tpixie Boy you got that right! And if I'm remembering right, Book Seven repeated itself on certain pages (book printing error?), so I kept wandering and getting confused. I finally read some summaries of just that book and MOVED ON. 🧡💜💛 5d
tpixie @TheBookHippie @dabbe. Yes I looked into the significance of Book 7. Apparently it‘s the sewer of humanity and later on we get to go through the physical sewers… 3d
TheBookHippie @tpixie it‘s like a game 😵‍💫🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🫣 @dabbe 3d
tpixie @TheBookHippie 💜💜💜 3d
lil1inblue @tpixie @thebookhippie @dabbe I personally found this book fascinating. It felt like he was explaining the tone of the time, and setting things up for later events. It's like he took a minute to let us know that this is also brewing. I also found it quite relevant to the US right now. 3d
TheBookHippie @lil1inblue SO SO RELEVANT!!! 3d
dabbe @TheBookHippie 🩵🎯🩵 2d
dabbe @lil1inblue So relevant! And so hilarious that LES MIS is our #cheetosatan's favorite musical. Does he even know what it's about? 😂 2d
lil1inblue @dabbe What musical did he even watch? 😂 😂 😂 That's almost the definition of cognitive dissonance! 😅 2d
dabbe @lil1inblue 😂🎯😂 2d
tpixie @lil1inblue I did enjoy this book once I understood the purpose of what he was trying to tell us. I do enjoy his tangent sometimes it just takes me a little bit to figure out what his message is! 2d
lil1inblue @tpixie Oddly enough, in today's chapter (Sept 8), he comes back to some themes from this book. 😅 I feel like reading this is a good exercise in patience. 😂 2d
tpixie @lil1inblue Interesting!!! Yes! Patience 🩵 1d
