lil1inblue Catherine Parr's story is truly fascinating. It is a bit tragic, because it seems like she was unable to say no to the king's proposal (and may have wanted to), and had to make the best of her plight. 6h

AnneCecilie I felt truly sorry for her. She seemed like one of the good ones. It also shows how little power a woman had, even the widow after a king. 4h

LiseWorks I was sad that she was betrayed by her last husband. It was probably vwey common for woman dying in child birth when being over 30 4h

dabbe @lil1inblue I always wondered how she must have felt, KNOWING he had two previous wives' heads cut off! And what if she had said no; he probably would have had her in the Tower for treason as well. 3h

dabbe @LiseWorks He's the jerk that was in the books, too! Thomas Seymour: UGH! And he came on to Princess Elizabeth while married to Catherine while she was pregnant with his child! #douchebag 3h

dabbe I found Barak's story arc to be heartbreaking. Once a vibrant, street-smart ally, now he is left physically diminished. I hated seeing him relegated to a more minor role--Guy, too. And poor Shardlake! He ends the novel more isolated than ever. His unrequited love for Catherine Parr remains unresolved, his friendship with Guy Malton is strained further by working for Parr, and Barak‘s accident leaves him without his closest confidant, 3h

Deblovestoread I don‘t think she could‘ve have said no, nor did she probably sleep well at night wondering if she did anything wrong. And to have to be married to Henry at that time of his life…yuck! 3h

Karisimo It didn‘t feel too slow or bogged down to me! 7h

lil1inblue For me, it enhanced the reading experience. But I also love fantasy, which often involves a lot of world-building. I don't know about anyone else, but the last 25% of the book actually went quite quickly for me, because of how it unfolded! 6h

dabbe @Karisimo Same here. It took a while for the background to build, and I feel we truly got to see how long it takes to solve a mystery! But then, BAM! We all who've read it know exactly when things just went 😱, and then thos pages kept flipping! 6h

AnneCecilie I love it, all the details makes the story and the time period come alive. Generally, we only learn how the life of the royals and the court is, but most people don‘t live like that. I love how we get to know the life of the commoner.l without it feeling like a history lesson (edited) 4h

LiseWorks I actually didn't think it was that long. I, too, read long fantasy books. I am a fan of this eranand am fascinated by the fact there was so much suffering. How in the world did these people survive? 4h

dabbe @AnneCecilie Well said. I think that is one of Sansom's greatest strengths; he gives us meticulous details about the everyday life of all sorts of different people. Fascinating! 3h

Karisimo Isabel getting so far with her accusations seemed like a bit of a stretch but it did serve to illustrate the fear of the times. 7h

lil1inblue I think it shows how the confusion and intrigue at court permeated all of society. Similar to how so many people in the US are just tense and edgy right now. 6h

dabbe @Karisimo @lil1inblue The inheritance dispute mirrors the era‘s greed and familial betrayal, echoing the political backstabbing at court. It also underscores Shardlake‘s role as a resolver of conflicts in a morally ambiguous world. We need a Shardlake in our world right now. 6h

AnneCecilie I think they showed a lot of the themes in the book, and are probably some of the fictional figures I‘ll remember the most. Disagreements between siblings, especially when it comes to inheritance, as all to familiar. I can‘t believe she kicked that dog to death 4h

LiseWorks Their story was entertaining. Why they hated each other was something I wanted to know. And the real reason shocked me. 4h

Deblovestoread The sibling story was an interesting side story with a shocking ending. Isabel was horrible and I wanted to see her hang because of the dog. 3h

lil1inblue I thought it was so interesting that Lamentation of a Sinner was real, even if the theft was fictional. I also thought it was interesting that there really was a “plot“ to turn the king against her. And Anne Askew - a whole other rabbit hole! There was a lot in this one! 6h

dabbe @Karisimo @lil1inblue At over 600 pages, there was a TON to keep track of! I loved getting to have the inside view into Whitehall as well as knowing Catherine Parr a little better. I mean, she's fictional in that the story didn't happen, but Sansom showed quite a bit of who she was. She's my favorite of the six. 6h

AnneCecilie I think the siblings. Showing how different views and remembrances can split a family. Still happening today. And the all to human feeling of revenge 4h

LiseWorks I thought I knew about Henry, but reading this book brought how much suffering that man endured in his life. Diet and a broken leg and doctors who knew nothing actually killed him. And the courage it took for Catherine Parr tonnage to spend her evenings with him. 4h

Deblovestoread I enjoyed having Catherine more fleshed out than what I knew before this book. Although disappointed in her next choice of husband. 3h

dabbe @LiseWorks To live with an abscess in your leg for YEARS! Wow! There are scholars who now believe that his immense pain and other sicknesses contributed to him being such a tyrant. That is one guy I would NEVER want to cross! 3h

LiseWorks Oh my word. The King? I was shocked. I am so disappointed in Tamasin. It wasn't Shardlake fault. But losing a hand would be gard in this time. 15h

Karisimo I‘ve enjoyed every installment in this series- And I‘m not a big series reader, I prefer standalones!! I‘d be very hard-pressed to pick a favorite. 7h

lil1inblue Marking as a spoiler because I know not everyone will be caught up. OMG. The ending of this book! Poor Barak! I understand why Tamasin is so upset, but it's hard not to feel for Shardlake, too. AND THE KING?!?! So many games! My head was spinning after this one! 6h

Then, reading it this time, when I came to that pivotal Henry moment, I was like “How the hell could I not have remembered this!“ OMG! A ripping-through-pages turner at the end! (edited) 6h

AnneCecilie I love all the books and just like you @dabbe I couldn‘t believe I had forgotten the ending when I came to it. I probably read it 10 yrs ago as well, but still, an ending like that should have been remembered. And that talk, really made it clear that for people in power, everyone else is just pieces on a chess board that can be moved and killed as they chooses. The commoners don‘t hold any value (edited) 5h
