Normally a Saturday at 10:30 AM at Barnes & Noble Cafe is packed & you jockey for a table but I had my pick & I‘m in the corner trying to jam through this book before I have to return it to the library today. The whole mall is quiet. I don‘t blame people for staying away & social distancing. I wouldn‘t be here except that I have a salon visit for cut & highlights at Aveda upstairs that I‘m not willing to miss. #signofthetimes

Lovesbooks87 When I went to my local Barnes & Noble today one of the booksellers told me that they have been very slow this week and their sales have been really low! Kind of makes me sad but I understand why people haven‘t wanted to go out! 4y
DebinHawaii @Lovesbooks87 Yes, I‘m going to buy something before I leave. I feel a bit guilty sitting here reading a library book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

#QuotsyFeb19 Day 7: When being too damaged makes one feel #safe. I haven‘t read this book yet nor have I seen the film, but know all about the controversy behind Shriver‘s Mexican sombrero and cultural appropriation. I confess that it does not make me overly excited to read any of her books.

TrishB Despite her turning into a bit of an idiot, this was a great read. 5y
Bookwm85forever I like twisted books and enjoyed this one. I‘m Mexican and don‘t take offense to stupidity. Many authors throw their two cents out on social media and I don‘t like their opinions but I do like their books. #signofthetimes 5y
Bookgirl @Bookwm85forever Agreed. If we only read books by authors who think like we do, we are missing out on a lot of books. I‘ve not read this one though as I fear it will depress me. 5y

If there is one nonfiction book you're going to read this year, make it this one. 🔥 🔥 🔥

#readsoullit #signofthetimes

WhatDeeReads From the responses it seems like this one is better then Morgan‘s. 6y
Tamra I‘m anxious to read it! 6y
theshrinkette @WhatDeeReads Oh absolutely. I'm digging Morgan but this is on a WHOLE other level. 6y
theshrinkette @WhatDeeReads Actually, the more I think about it, that's an unfair comparison. The two books deal with very different things. Morgan is talking about Blackness in feminism and such, Ijeoma is talking about how to approach conversations on race. The intentions of both books are pretty different, both necessary, but different. If that makes sense. 6y

I listened to Coates present the audio version of his love letter to his black son growing up in the US. As the white mother of a fierce and kind brown girl living in this crazy nation right now, it was a gut punch reminder of my privilege and all the things that I can't prepare my daughter for. Powerful, and I definitely recommend the audio.

LauraBeth It‘s definitely tough and tougher than I ever thought it‘d be. Last night at the bookstore there was a woman wearing a shirt with a confederate flag on it and it said - I wear this just to piss you off. And you know what? When we left the store and got in the car, my daughter (who is 13), put her head in her hands and started to cry. 6y
amvs1111 @HOTPock3tt @DivineDiana @Cinfhen ♥️♥️♥️ (edited) 6y
amvs1111 @batsy I need to read more Baldwin this year. ♥️ 6y
amvs1111 @LauraBeth Sending big hugs to you and your girl. After the election, my daughter, who is Latina and 14, was asked by some classmates when she would be deported. My heart breaks for our girls and, at the same time, I'm more motivated than ever to work toward change. 💔💪♥️ 6y

The big controversy in my town in 2017 was the firing of librarians. It was a major issue in the mayoral race and led to some resignations. Don‘t mess with our Library! #nuyear #observer

LibrarianRyan Which library in which state. I nees to read more. 6y
TrishB Same for libraries in this country 😔 6y

LibrarianRyan @Suzze thanks I'll look it up later. We had 2 libraries in our state refunded last election. 6y
LibrarianRyan Literally a few minutes ago I was reading a story very similar to your town. It's very scary what non librarians try to do to libraries 6y
Suzze @LibrarianRyan We were all up in arms! 6y

#DecDays #SignoftheTimes Catching up on some challenge posts from yesterday. Two great nonfiction books I read this year are good examples of the sign of the times we live in. The tagged book talks about how emotions can spread to form a social condition or contagion & Disrobed shows how our choices in clothing impact the world. For both I featured avocado toast 'recipes' as my food pairing--its popularity is another sign of the times. 😋📚🥑🍞😆

Cinfhen Looking forward to seeing more of your amazing creations & posts in 2018 ❤️ 6y

#DecDays Admittedly, I bailed on this book back in June, but I‘m ready to give it another shot in 2018😊
Focusing on the hypocrisies, social realities, and political dangers of contemporary American culture, it‘s a #signofthetimes 🎵http://spoti.fi/2zUg6mp (as is the notion that I‘m listening to Harry Styles😬)

TrishB I‘ve never liked any Rushdie - just not for me! 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve read Satanic Verses but I don‘t think he‘s an author for me. 6y

#DecDays #SignOfTheTimes @Cinfhen I have no book ! So I‘m quoting from this brilliant song ( first time hearing it 👍) : “just stop your crying it‘s a sign of the times. IT Will be all right ❤️” Have the time of your life “ Littens : “ Have the time of your life”. Thankyou @Cinfhen 🙏Happy New Year All

Good quick read, a love story with lots of sub plots and a focus on British Muslims- nationalism, society, media portrayal.
#signofthetimes fits for this one.
