Why We're Polarized | Ezra Klein
post image
Pickpick

Decided I wanted to do more reading to try and understand where—waves hands around—we find ourselves today. Klein‘s book is an eye-opener that examines, among other topics, the role of identity, the desire to be a winner (in politics like in sports), the psychology behind why people vote the way they do, media & the press, the difference between Democrats & Republicans and how to manage polarization going forward. A fascinating, informative read.

TheBookHippie I‘ll pick this up. Around here they vote for who the minister says 😵‍💫 and anything to put the libtard in their place😵‍💫. 5d
TracyReadsBooks @TheBookHippie both of those are discussed, the latter more than the former, in the book! 😠 My TBR pile is definitely growing after reading this one—he references a lot of books that sound really interesting. 5d
TheBookHippie @TracyReadsBooks I‘ve almost picked it up a few times, so I really need to! 5d
TracyReadsBooks @TheBookHippie I found it to be really thought provoking and an excellent overview of the variety of elements feeding into our polarization. Definitely recommend it. 5d

Read in 2024. I listened to this one over audio that was narrated by the author. I liked Cultish a little more but found this one interesting too. Montell highlights different psychological concepts & how they connect to our current society (social media, conspiracy theories, biases). I was already familiar with a lot of these ideas from other readings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m torn on this one. The author highlights important areas where boys lag behind girls (rates of maturation, educational attainment) and ways particularly Black boys experience discrimination and the structural issues they face in school and society. He‘s careful to make clear he does not want to improve outcomes for boys and men at the expense of women. He loses me when talking about how now that women don‘t “need” men, ⬇️

fredthemoose … men are now adrift and don‘t know their roles. I have a hard time thinking of other groups who are waiting for society to present them with their unique, valued role instead of just rolling up their sleeves, figuring out how to use their talents to make a contribution and getting to work. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 2mo

fredthemoose @willaful @quietlycuriouskate thanks. I really struggled with what to think of this. It did make me think and I want to be fair to it. The author was careful never to say it, but it seemed like implicitly a lot of the problem is that men are no long implicit the top of the hierarchy just for existing and that is hard for them and I‘m not the *most* sympathetic to that. I didn‘t enjoy this book as much as “Cultish”, but it was a good listen 😊

My annual reading theme is sociopolitical. I haven't had a chance to post my full #Roll100 list yet. However, these are the 3 for January's roll. Getting 2025 off to a fighting start.

“To sincerely adopt the psychology of tokenism, you have to sell your own community out. That‘s the dark underbelly of the thing. Instead of blaming institutions rules and social attitudes of those around you for the absence of other people like you, you blame your own community.”
💯💯💯💯
also: I don‘t know why the picture is red.
