I woke up to a scary email about changes to my train back to Paris. I rushed over to the station at 10:00 to resolve it, but the office didn‘t open until 10:30 so I killed time in this nice little park.

The staff tell me there‘s no issue with my seat, no matter what the email says, but I‘m still gonna worry until I‘m actually on the TGV.

In other news, THE SHABTI is great! Interesting characters, strong horror elements, solid conflict.

tpixie 😅🍀 🇫🇷 1w
Dilara Oh dear! I hope the staff was right... 1w
xicanti @Dilara they were wrong. I ended up having to go back there after lunch, but now I have a 2nd class seat facing backwards instead of the 1st class forward-facing seat I booked weeks ago. I‘m not impressed, either with SNCF‘s decision to shrink the train or with the early staff‘s failure to check on that. 1w

So, it turns out the restaurants of Tours mostly don‘t open until 18:00 or 18:30. I NEEDED food, so I had another half a baguette and some salmon salad someone left in the cupboard.

I also have language fatigue. My written comprehension is great, but my aural stinks, and I‘m tired of always being embarrassed and ashamed because I can‘t understand people. I‘m just gonna hole up inside and be kinda hungry with this historical mystery.

Ruthiella Yeah, oral comprehension is tough! It comes with time, but when one is in the country for a short period… 1w
tpixie Yes! I wish everybody talked with captions over their heads! I can read French better than understand them when they‘re talking!!! 💬💬💬 1w
xicanti @Ruthiella yep. Sigh. 1w
xicanti @tpixie I wish this ALL THE TIME. When I watch French shows and movies, I put the French subtitles on and it makes life so much easier. 1w
tpixie @xicanti yes! ❤️❤️❤️ 1w

3.5/5 ⭐️ - I think I was expecting something witchy when I picked this book up, it was an average read for me so it took me a while to get through it. However, it was much better than other reviews lead me to believe.

The book follows a 13 year old girl named Emily who is a twin. It highlights the pains of growing up to realize life is not ever as simple as it seems when you‘re young and perhaps naive of the world around you.

Cuddling up with the baby boy doing some evening reading. About 40 pages in, hoping it‘ll pick up soon.

In this engrossing story of profound grief and supernatural visitations, Constance turns to a spiritualist to assuage her mother's overwhelming despair after her younger sister dies. When she subsequently learns of a mysterious bequest, Constance feels compelled to uncover the truth about a mystery at its heart. The author deftly portrays the novel's Victorian setting as well as the desperation and despair of a woman trapped by her circumstances.

August 2024 Book #3

The month of August was not a good reading month for me in terms of how many books I enjoyed. Another unpopular opinion. I just couldn‘t with this book. It was interesting at the beginning but I found it so boring. I really struggled, some parts I care but most of the time not. Sorry for fans of this book. I have two other books by this author that I will try. 2.5⭐️⬇️

Gissy I felt with this book the same way I felt with The Once and Future Witches by Alix Harrow😳In my opinion too unnecessarily descriptive, dragging the story but at the same time an interesting story🤷🏽‍♀️ 7mo
Ruthiella This one is super slow. I say that as a huge Sarah Waters fan. More fast paced are Fingersmith and her debut 7mo

5feet.of.fury I bailed on this one, such slow pacing 7mo
Gissy @Ruthiella I own Fingersmith and The Little Stranger which has low rating in GR but the premise sounds interesting. I want to watch the adaption but after I read the book. 7mo
Gissy @5feet.of.fury I was almost on that thought, it was a torture😖 7mo

About 1/3 of the way in, nothing has happened & I‘m not finding myself hoping for anything to happen. Might be a slow burn (but too slow for me).
On to the next! maybe whoever is next on the Libby hold list will find it a better fit! #authoramonth

Ruthiella This one is really slow, but next to Fingersmith, it‘s my favorite. 🤩 8mo
