Gothic tale, psychological study, puzzle narrativeThis is gripping, astute fiction that feeds the mind and senses. The Seattle Times An upper-class woman recovering from a suicide attempt, Margaret Prior has begun visiting the womens ward of Millbank prison, Victorian Londons grimmest jail, as part of her rehabilitative charity work. Amongst Millbanks murderers and common thieves, Margaret finds herself increasingly fascinated by on apparently innocent inmate, the enigmatic spiritualist Selina Dawes. Selina was imprisoned after a sance she was conducting went horribly awry, leaving an elderly matron dead and a young woman deeply disturbed. Although initially skeptical of Selinas gifts, Margaret is soon drawn into a twilight world of ghosts and shadows, unruly spirits and unseemly passions, until she is at last driven to concoct a desperate plot to secure Selinas freedom, and her own. As in her noteworthy deput, Tipping the Velvet, Sarah Waters brilliantly evokes the sights and smells of a moody and beguiling nineteenth-century London, and proves herself yet again a storyteller, in the words of the New York Times Book Review, of "startling power."

After a long look at my shelves I found that I was in a crime/thriller sort of mood, so do you fancy any of these @Cupcake12 @charl08 ? You don't have to match my mood with your picks & I'll tag the other books in comments so you can read more about them.

Have got plenty of others to chose from if you don't fancy any of these (or my mood - have got other genres to choose!)

Letter A
Affinity by Sara Waters. She‘s an amazing author that manages to capture the atmosphere & feelings of the characters to perfection.
Most of her works are horrors/thrillers/gothic. She also tends to include lesbian representation & romance, which I appreciate.
Have you read it?

Gothic melodrama set in a female prison.

In between a pick and so-so. Affinity has a Victorian gothic voice, but it drags. For most of the book nothing really happens. I did love the settling in of an oppressive atmosphere that helped majorly with the themes.

I‘ve loved everything Sarah Waters has written but I didn‘t love this as much as I wanted to, although it was my mood that influenced that rather than the book itself. A Victorian gothic psychological thriller set largely in a women‘s prison this slowly, slowly creeps towards its sinister ending. I did love the final third, possibly because the weather turned cloudy and stormy at the perfect time! This would be a great read for a winter afternoon

Affinity is a slow paced book but an excellent read none the less. The author transports you right into the creepy labyrinth that is Millbank prison throughout the book. You want to learn more about women in prison during the Victorian era. The characters are well written and the book explores many subjects. I was able to figure out the majority of the ending, but not all of it.

I have been trying to complete this book by end of month, but with a new baby in the house it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I'm about two thirds through this book and I'm really enjoying it so far. Even though it is fiction, it is very interesting to learn about women in prison and the prison itself during the end of the Victorian Era.

Sarah Waters is the greatest.
Victorian Gothic - Margaret visits the ladies incarcerated in Millbank prison and becomes inamored with Selina Dawes who is locked up after a seance she conducted resulted in death.
Margaret is lured into dangerous territory and things just get creepier and creepier.
This one is a slow burn, but it‘s worth your patience to stick with it.

Another extraordinary novel from Sarah Waters. I can't believe I'm only just now discovering these books. I'm amazed by her range and her ability to conjure another era in such an all-absorbing, spellbinding way. This one is an absolutely perfect Gothic mystery/tragedy/ghost story, set in a Victorian-era women's prison. If you read Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and felt like you'd never read anything as good again--THIS!!!!

JamieArc I‘m nearing the end of Fingersmith, also my first Sarah Waters, and am reading wide-eyed with the unraveling of the story - it‘s so good! 5y

I looked forward to reading this book for a long time, but I was so disappointed. While Sarah Waters will always earn an extra star from me for the way she constructs her novels, the pace was almost unbearably slow.

Also, I seem to have developed an aversion to stories in which women make assumptions for which they are ultimately humiliated. It‘s why I didn‘t finish The House of Mirth earlier this year. 😕 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

AlaMich I agree. I really enjoy Waters, but this was my least favorite of her books. 5y
Susannah @AlaMich I‘ve only read this one and The Paying Guest. I know that some/many people thought The Paying Guest was lackluster, but I liked it better than Affinity. I really need to get to Fingersmith soon, as I‘m thinking that folks agree that‘s one of her best. Which did you like best? 5y

If I had seen a description of this book that described it as gothic, historial fiction, I'd never have picked it up. Learning it was paranormal would have put me off too, yet Waters' style is something different and I read every word with care. Some parts didn't sit quite right with me, dragging a little at times, but this was certainly an enjoyable read - it's 4 stars for "Affinity".

#LMPBC #seatosea @Jabberwocky @BookishTrish @FantasyChick I finished!
This book was definitely a sloooooow build, so slow that had it not been a bookclub pick, I would have bailed from boredom.
Also, I thought it fairly predictable in its own way but not entirely guessable, if you know what I mean.

TQTyson @Kaye My first book came out in 2015 (Three Rivers). My second book comes out March 13 (The Past Is Never). And favorite authors would be a LONG list! Recently I'm loving Michael Farris Smith and Ron Rash. I'm also into Sarah Waters right now. Always love Margaret Atwood, Lauren Groff, Daniel Woodrell, Jennifer Egan. I could go on, but I won't! Who do you love to read? 6y
Kaye Lets see, for Southern authors. Long list, some that are no longer with us. Love Pat Conroy, Reynolds Price, Lee Smith, Michael Lee West, Ron Rash‘s One Foot in Eden was excellent. David Payne, Olive Ann Burns, Fannie Flagg‘s early books, Truman Capote ( favorite is Grass Harp ), Dorothy Allison, Mary Karr , Wendell Berry, Richard Marius. Gosh, I could go on and on. Have probably missed a truckload. Are your books on Amazon ? 6y

@BookishTrish I‘m sending off your #seatosea book today! Don‘t feel rushed to get into it or anything, I‘m just about to get super busy at work and want to get it sent off ASAP. Also I️ felt weird writing an introduction to myself in the book itself so I️ made a little pocket for my letter. 📖🇨🇦 #LBMPC #Swap

BookishTrish That's so exciting! I finished mine this morning and I'm hoping to send it off on Friday! It's heading to @FantasyChick 6y

WOW. I don't even know how to sum up this book. Dark- yes. Gothic- also yes. But passionate and twisting and marvellous also. I can't wait to see what the rest of you think of it!!! @FantasyChick @Andrea4 @BookishTrish #seatosea #LMPBC

BookishTrish Holy cats did you speed through that! I have to admit, I'm excited about your choice. 6y
Jabberwocky @BookishTrish Hahaha I have to admit it was very difficult to put down and I kind of abandoned everything else I was reading to finish it. 😅 6y
FantasyChick Holy crap! You're already done!?! I've just dug mine out of the closet haha I can't wait to read this book now!!!! 😁 6y

I wonder about this a lot... I would never have realized I was gay if my first girlfriend hadn't been very aggressive with me... it's very likely that I would have gone through life and married a man and never met my fiancé, my soul mate, simply because I would have never though to look for my soulmate in the body of a woman... #lgbtq #queer #quotes #queerbooks
