An honest look at the consumerism behind Christmas. Hank spends the season with different families in Texas in 2006, exploring everything from shopping traditions to Christmas lights displays. It is a real reflection on how the holiday is treated, especially before the recession hit the country. It is filled with biting sarcasm and lovely 00s throwbacks.

Funny, thought provoking and occasionally sad, I really liked this non fiction look at shopping and decorating and capitalism‘s place in America‘s christmases, based on interviews with families of Texans in the mid 00s. It felt strangely historical looking back before the financial crash and how different things were then. I recommend as a very different ‘festive read‘ than normal.

In this book, the author looked at how several individuals and families celebrate Christmas in Frisco, TX. He looks at how commercial, huge, and sometimes how disappointing the holiday can be. The reader gets to know a number of unique individuals to include their quirks and faults along with their better qualities. Fans of NPR shows like This American Life and Snap Judgement will probably enjoy this work.

I liked the story; however it I didn't feel real. It is told from 3 POVs, but mainly from Claire's POV. Her husband Chris lotsy his job during the recession and was out of work for a year. He fell into a deep depression and though he now has a new job they no longer talk. He travels 4/5 days a week and when home works. This had left Claire alone and she seeks police with Daniel a police officer. Though the relationship is platonic they are ⬇️

TheSpineView Drawn to each other. The book is all about relationships. The author is asking the question if you can love two people at the same time. I just found it hard to believe that as close as Daniel and Claire became that the relationship remained platonic. Still a good story and well written... just not believable. 4⭐ 4y

#24B4Monday @Andrew65 @SumisBooks @jb72

Here is my final total for this weekend's readathon.
I read Covet, made it halfway through The Last Angel Warrior and a little over 1/3 into Heaven's River. I had intended to read different books but I just never got to them.
