It‘s a cold day in South Carolina. I wanted to curl up and read my book of the month. Guess I‘ll have to make other plans.

I usually hate short stories but decided to make this my Book of the Month anyway. I absolutely loved every story in this book! I was completely drawn in.
This is pretty much pure beach read material. An almost tragedy brings out everyone's dirty laundry. Not bad for a quick read. Nothing earth shattering here.
I usually stay away from fictional accounts of real people in history, but I really enjoyed this one. I did feel compelled to look up a lot of information and pictures of the people involved. While not 100% accurate, this book was a very interesting portrayal of a bygone era. I definitely recommend it.
Gag me. This book is nothing but overly sentimental garbage. Why is it romantic to be married to a man child who can't make canned soup or pick up his dirty clothes? In what world does a dying woman really agonize over finding her husband a new wife while forbidding him to accompany her to her brain surgery? I hated everything about this book. I only finished it because I was listening to the version narrated by Rebecca Lowman. She's amazing.
I got pretty tired of reading about the slutty exploits of this woman throughout her life. She's never really forced to learn from her mistakes and still gets a neat happy ending. Also, the twist was predictable beyond belief.
This time she compared the food in her fridge to school children who have had assigned seats all year but have been given free reign at the end of the semester. I really don't know why I'm still listening to this one. It's depressing and the writing is horrible.
Ok not a metaphor this time, but she just used the same caulk= cock joke twice in 2 chapters. Inexcusable.
This book is terrible! I have no idea how I'll get through it. I'm going to start documenting all my favorite similes and metaphors. 1) "All the air was sucked from the room as if someone had said Voldemort in the middle of Hogwarts." What?!
I don't know how it took me so long to discover this author. This is a very short read and can easily be finished in one sitting. The writing is beautiful and the story is very touching.
I have loved everything I've read by Matthew Quick. This one just didn't do it for me. The story drags on forever then changes the plot half way through. The end rushes to knit everything together. It was just missing something.
This was really good until the end. It was dark until everything was just wrapped up in a happy little bow.
This book reminds me of my favorite short story The Way of the Cross by Daphne du Maurier. The questionable religious pilgrimage allows for wonderful characters to develop. While not the most action packed novel, the writing is superb. Hurley creates an absolutely haunting atmosphere.
Didn't realize this was part of a series until I started it. Looking forward to the next one.
Wow. This is a really quick one sitting kind of read. But it will stick with me for awhile. It's absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking.
So I've really enjoyed the rest of her books. They're light and fluffy reads with the back and forth pov chapters that make a real page turner. This one, however, just felt tedious. It took so long to find out what happened that I stopped caring along the way.
Listened to the Audible version of this one. Great narrator for a great story. I really flew through this one. Who doesn't love a good death bed confession/redemption story?
Not my favorite but a respectable ending to the trilogy. I loved the first two. This one just didn't do it for me.

I feel like I've been reading this since the dawn of time. Will it ever be over? I just don't see what the fuss is about. Bored to tears over here. Sadly I'm past the 25% point so my OCD won't allow me to bail on it.

I've been trying to read more short story collections. I liked this one better than I thought I would. I still don't think short stories are for me.
Hated almost every minute. The end was the most ridiculously stupid thing I've ever read. The characters were flat, the ending was abrupt and the book within a book was even more poorly written. There was no sense of the setting which was the reason I bought it in the first place.
I think I've learned my lesson. When a book is compared to 2 of my all time favorites, it will be nothing like either of them. This one is supposed to combine the setting of Beautiful Ruins with the history of Orphan Train. It really, really does not. It is so slow and drawn out. I don't care about the characters or what happens. I should bail, but I'm almost done.
Loved the Audible version. Great narrator.
Spending the 4th of July reading in a wheelbarrow filled with water. Doesn't get more American than that!
I actually liked the chapters about her childhood more than the parts on the island. Which is a good thing, because those parts filled more than half the book. Writing was good enough. Ending was abrupt.
Ok I'm almost at the halfway point and am totally hooked by the story and the writing. But... I'm already tired of the typical 'rich white evil republicans' theme. It's a clear case of good vs evil where having money means you're crooked for sure. Kind of old.
I should probably wait to review this one because I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I wanted to love it but I had a hard time connecting to the characters and to the writing.
A book with very little actual action but full of beautiful prose and engaging characters. The use of a minor character as narrator could be confusing at times but made the book that much more interesting. I feel that this one will stay with me for quite some time. Great choice for my first BOTM
I do the Kindle cloud sharing thing with my mom because why not right? Sadly, she mostly buys books by crooked political figures. So she told me to make a wish list so she can buy our next few novels! She'll never be able to make up for the Ann Coulter mess, but this is a start!
I wish this book would have ended about 20 pages earlier. It seemed like the author had to tie everything up in a happy little bow. I'd rather have a sad but real ending.
Listened to the Audible version of this. Dan Stevens is a fantastic narrator!
I don't usually like collections of short stories, but I'd heard good things about several of these. I absolutely loved a few (the ones by Flynn, Willis, Rothfuss and Martin). Most of the others were ok. I'd definitely recommend this collection for scifi or fantasy fans.
I would say that I enjoyed the first 80% of this one. I liked the back and forth from past to present. The entire story really fell apart at the end. It felt rushed and just really didn't make sense.
I picked this up for some light reading on a cruise. I had no idea just how dark it would be. The sexual nature of the relationship between the 2 young girls seems a bit over done. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the writing was excellent.
I straight up ugly cried at the end of this one. The predicament this man finds himself in is absolutely heartbreaking.
It's not often that I enjoy a book when I hate all of the characters. This was an exception. Although it was difficult to find many redeeming qualities, each character brought something special to their dysfunctional family.
