Enchanted Islands
Enchanted Islands: A Novel | Allison Amend
178 posts | 85 read | 2 reading | 236 to read
Inspired by the mid-century memoirs of Frances Conway, Enchanted Islands is the dazzling story of an independent American woman whose path takes her far from her native Minnesota when she and her husband, an undercover intelligence officer, are sent to the Galpagos Islands on the brink of World War II. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1882 to immigrant parents, Frances Frankowski covets the life of her best friend, Rosalie Mendel, who has everything Fanny could wish formoney, parents who value education, and an effervescent and winning personality. When, at age fifteen, Rosalie decides they should run away to Chicago, Fanny jumps at the chance to escape her unexceptional life. But, within a year, Rosalie commits an unforgiveable betrayal, inciting Frances to strike out on her own.Decades later, the women reconnect in San Francisco and realize how widely their lives have diverged. While Rosalie is a housewife and mother, Frances works as a secretary for the Office of Naval Intelligence. There she is introduced to Ainslie Conway, an intelligence operator ten years her junior. When its arranged for Frances and Ainslie to marry and carry out a mission on the Galpagos Islands, the couple's identitiesalready hidden from each otherare further buried under their new cover stories. No longer a spinster living a lonely existence, Frances is about to begin the most fascinating and intrigue-filled years of her life. Amidst active volcanoes, inhospitable flora and wildlife, and unfriendly neighbors, Ainslie and Frances carve out a life for themselves. But the secrets they harbor from their enemies and from each other may be their undoing.Drawing on the rich history of the early twentieth century and set against a large, colorful canvas, Enchanted Islands boldly examines the complexity of female friendship, the universal pursuit of a place to call home, and the reverberations of secrets we keep from others and from ourselves. From the Hardcover edition.

Bailedbailed

I dislike when marketing mismatches content. The book flap had me thinking this was a spy story set in the Galapagos. I was so ready for that. Instead it's about a strained friendship. I bailed 90 pages in with zero mention of islands. Pretty cover, though.

BookishMarginalia That‘s disappointing! 3y

On a happier note, this is a beautiful historical fiction novel! It spans from 1882 to 1964 across the US and in the Galápagos Islands.

What captured me the most in Frances‘s amazing journey was the different relationships she had and how they wove together to make her whole. In life, there is sorrow, joy, and compromise between the two. Amend captured that perfectly!

I just realized that I am reading/ have read two books in a row with the same name!? This was an interesting novel about a woman who went to the Galapagos right before WWII as an American spy to monitor Germans who had settled there. It is the story of a quirky life, friendship, survival and different kinds of love. I love reading books set in places I am visiting! An interesting read based on a real person - heavily fictionalized.

A unique story about an introverted woman with a weak connection with her family and few friends. She is invited to be in a staged marriage in order to accompany a man to the Galápagos Islands in the 1930's. The government has assigned them to spy on Germans during the build up to WWII. Written in the first person, we gain incredible insight into this woman's fascinating life.

This was a pleasant surprise! I liked the lovely writing and the portrayal of female friendship. I also liked the thought that adventures are for people of all ages (Frances was in her 50s when she lived on the Galápagos Islands). I finished this book and promptly researched Ainslie and Frances, as well as the history of the Islands - so interesting!

One of my greatest joys is randomly picking up a book because the cover or title catches my eye and finding myself totally submerged and loving the tale. This was as enjoyable as it's cover was beautiful. A fictional tale written about two actual people from history, Frances and Ainsley Conway, who lived on the Galapagos Islands during the WWII. It's been suggested that they may have been spies and Amend based her tale on those suspicions 4🌟

A lovely little read - nothing world changing, but a fascinating account of living on the Galápagos Islands - based on a true story.
Reminder that in the 1930s there is a lot of sexism, racism and homophobia that is just considered day-to-day normal and which makes me wince as you read.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Those meat eater types do go on a bit tho 🙄 6y
TrishB @thegirlwiththelibrarybag to be fair - this particular bit of the story is in the 1930s! Although I do find people can still get a bit aggressive when you say you‘re vegetarian!! 6y
Suet624 I always find it funny when people ask me what in the world I eat then. (edited) 6y
See All 13 Comments
TrishB @Suet624 yeah- that‘s still a common one! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TrishB, I try and look at the irony of them complaining about how annoying vegetarians and vegans are when I haven‘t said anything other than I don‘t eat meat... 6y
TrishB @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I find that happens less these days - but probably because I eat with less new people! Those people who set out to tell you that you‘re wrong to be a vegetarian and the reasons why it‘s ok for them to eat meat. When you never questioned their right to eat meat in the first place!! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TrishB, I find most people either tell you how little meat they eat or try and justify their own consumption (I didn‘t ask, I just ordered a veggie burger), I recently sat through an anti-vegan tirade that wasn‘t directed at me (but she knew full well that she was in the company of two vegetarians) where I was kind of annoyed at myself for not speaking up (but there really is no point when someone is nursing that kind of grudge) 6y
TrishB My son‘s bf is vegan - we get the anti vegan thing a lot. I can‘t keep quiet, people should just mind their own business! 6y
ValerieAndBooks Yes, all this plus asking me WHY I am vegetarian! Just let me eat what I want in peace 😊 6y
TrishB @ValerieAndBooks hear hear 😁 6y
Caroline2 Yeah my husband is vegetarian (he was brought up veggie so he's never eaten meat!) so I'm vegetarian by proxy! (Who can be bothered to cook two meals?!) and I get so sick of all the questions! No, it is healthy. We eat lots of different things. No I don't miss bacon sarnies! 🙄 6y

How about a tropical island jungle? This was one of my tops books of 2016. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the cover sold me. Admittedly, only about 1/3 of the book deals with time on the islands, but the storyline between Frances and her childhood friend, as well as her relationship with Ainslie Conway, was just as compelling in the US as it was on the islands. #welcometothejungle #junetunz

We went camping over the long weekend & this was the perfect book to bring along. I loved it so much! I found Frances to be a relatable character & her relationships with Rosalie & Ainslie are well written. She was naive & often didn't realize the truth of what was going on, but as the reader I found her naïveté believable. The island was the place she felt most at home and I think that is somewhat symbolic of her character. ?? continued...

MeganAnn I'm intrigued by Ainslie and Frances Conway and I'd love to read their book as well and anything else I can find about them. Pictured is my son while we were camping this weekend. After being sick for a week I finally made it to the only indie book store in town that sells new books. We loved it. It was small and cozy but with a variety of reads. It has a book store bunny instead of a cat. I used immense will power and only got one book, a bookmark and this game. My oldest and my hubby share a love of puns so it was a fun challenge for them.
