I, like 99.9% of people, really like Tom Hanks. I loved his writing and would absolutely read a novel written by him. My lack of interest in this was, I believe, more because I am coming to the conclusion that the short story format isn't something I enjoy. If I like the short story, the length is never enough; if I dislike it, even 20 pages is a slog.
The first book that I‘d like to share is one you may have already seen. “Uncommon Type” by THE @tomhanks is a fiction collection of short stories with one thing in common: they all somehow involve a typewriter. I just started it & am already loving it! So, definitely pick yourself up a copy from the store OR support your local library (@dallaspubliclibrary)! I hope you‘ll take the time to read something this week 📚
I can not rate this book enough! 👏
I've always loved Tom Hanks as an actor with the many roles he has played, and i can safetly say he's turned out to he an incredibly imaginitive author!
Several of the stories in this book have left me utterly emotional and i am so glad i picked it up from the library!
I would 100% read this title again!
Been struggling to find the time to just sit and read for a little while because life has all of a sudden been hectic, but I am determined to make it my mission to finish this lovely piece of work by Tom Hanks by atleast next Wednesday 😂
Wish me luck guys 🤞
A collection of short stories by acclaimed actor Tom Hanks, each featuring his beloved typewriters.
I‘ll be frank, I had more fun imagining Hanks sitting at a typewriter, working on the stories, than actually listening. The only reason I made it through was his narration, which was a perfect fit.
There was nothing wrong with the stories, they just felt a little old fashioned. There are. couple I liked, but the rest were pretty plain. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Listened to this on audiobook because who wouldn‘t want to listen to Tom Hanks narrate, am i right? While I enjoyed a few of the stories in here, a good portion of them were just “okay”. For a few of the stories, I found it difficult to pay attention. A bit old-fashioned, which I didn‘t mind. Wished to was more engaging.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Tom Hanks narrates, and I just love his inflections. Each short tale involves a typewriter to some degree as a minor character. Definitely listen! There were two stories I didn't love but overall it's really sweet, interesting and worth your time.
We are doing #buddyread for Tom Hanks book. I bought the book, because I love him. We are starting on 1st June - do you want to join in? I am hoping few more can join from here :)
Generally, I‘m not really a short story fan, I always find myself either wanting more or just not caring about the stories. This was a mixture of the two. Tom Hanks and his love of typewriters is charming as ever but as an audiobook, it was difficult to figure out when one story ended and the next begins.
A slow reading month in February, & a late post because I was out of town in early March.
I had read Uncommon Type, but when I found that Tom Hanks narrated his own book, I had to listen. Anyone who knows me knows I adore Tom Hanks. ♥

Another bail for me! I‘m having no luck with short stories this year. 😕 This is a shame because I‘m a lover of short stories.
Roxanne Gay summed up this story perfectly on a Goodreads review. To quote, the stories are “aggressively bland”. 👎🏻
I‘m bored with this book & I‘ve been AVOIDING IT, which is a sure sign that I need to drop it. Sorry, Tom Hanks!
I kept telling myself, “you don‘t need to check out any books. You‘re already reading two and listening to one... and you keep renewing one on kindle that you KNOW you‘re not going to get to...”
But alas, here I am in bed with my library book because I NEED to know what happens between Anna and the unnamed narrator. 😭
Oh Tom Hanks, you are such a great actor and director and I adore you, but I just can't finish your book! I'd be willing to give it a shot by reading but audio book is not the way to go. There is absolutely no indication of when going from one chapter to the next and it's hard to follow. Love how you sneak a typewriter into each story but that's it. Also, you trying to sound like a sexy woman is off-putting and kinda creepy. #Itried #dnf #bail
Forgive me, seems I am a bit behind in my reviews. I listened to this one on audio. I like most of the stories. I do wish there would have been more of a signal when a new story started on the audiobook, as it was hard to tell. It was interesting how he worked in a typewriter into each story.
4 stars! I was really pleasantly surprised by Hanks‘ Uncommon Type. His writing is strong and imaginative. I admit, I was also drawn in by the cover. Sadly, the stories aren‘t too in depth and could sometimes have been developed further. Still the characters are endearing and plots are charming!

Working on this read right now.
Any one else reading this now? If so, what do you think so far?
I love Tom Hanks, and was quite excited about this book. I had a friend tell me she thought it was "fine" but ultimately stopped reading it. I've been picking up other books in between short stories. Maybe I'll be finished by the end of 2020! Perhaps I'll try audible???

Also, I'm currently re-"read"ing this by listening to it on audio.
I'm a huge Tom Hanks fan. Just ask @britt_brooke . ? I read this when it first came out, but just recently learned that he reads the audiobook (why this didn't occur to me earlier, I have no idea), so I just had to borrow it from the library to listen. ☺ #currentread #currentlyreading #audiobook #readingwithmyears #libby
Being a huge Tom Hanks fan, I love that he read it himself. The only thing I wish he would have done differently was make it more know that the stories were changing. This was a great pick for my first audiobook 😄 I enjoyed all of the stories minus the last one.
So I did a thing last night and decided to sign up for Audible. Naturally I chose Tom Hanks book as my first choice of books to listen to. I got some listening in while getting ready for & driving to work this morning.
I enjoyed these short stories read by the author. They‘re uneven - some much better crafted than others - but overall well done and fun. So it‘s a pick. I have a daughter who loves typewriters, and I understand that the print book has pictures of typewriters in it. But I feel like Hanks‘ reading really adds to the stories. So my delimma, Littens - which version do I get her for Christmas??? Help me out!
#Audiocrossstitching to these short stories.
So grateful for the many ways in which technology has made my life easier, but sometimes I miss the “ancient” stuff, like busy signals, snail mail & typewriters (see the lower right corner in the above picture). Only sometimes, mind...
Oh, and if anyone is wondering? Not my room!! 😂😂😂
Went to see Tom Hanks in conversation last night to discuss his book. He was absolutely charming and delightful. I love him ❤️ I don't know if I plan to read the book because I've seen mixed reviews 🙈😳But I have it now, just in case...
Currently I am on about 4th or 5th short story and this book is going with my current needs of short and easy reading. The stories are all over the place and there is no particular theme. There's humor, sadness and complete understanding of every day life. I also like the different typewriters before the start of each story and there was a Russian one so extra points in my book. I'll give this collection a so-so for now until I finish. #shortstory
Haul from the Savers 99 cent book sale
Some of these books were actually on my wishlist. I feel a sense of accomplishment because of that! A friend had recommended the Tom Hanks book very recently so I was excited about that find.
I have already read Phantom of the Opera but I wanted that cover. And while I have more than one Poe collection, the cover on this one is awesome and the intro is by Neil Gaiman. How could I pass that up?
We went out before the hurricane hits to grab some supplies and decided to stop at the local thrift stores. I found these two items. My cost $1.00.
I haven‘t read many short story collections, but I enjoyed this one. The tone of each story is told like a movie, and I would say that each focuses on telling about “an American life,” especially that of the New Yorker. No politics here - just good storytelling.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2, maybe 4 stars because of a few of my favorite stories (Christmas Eve 1953, A Month in Greene Street, The Past Is Important to Us).
Totally unimpressive. I hate that publishers with pay celebrities for work they‘d never accept from anyone else. Hanks could be a good writer. But it all reads like short stories I read from high schoolers. Add that to the running theme of “wasn‘t everything better back in the day”, no character progression even though a lot of the stories feature the same characters and a superfluous typewriter in every short, just skip it.
