Lying Game
Lying Game | Ruth Ware
From the instant New York Times bestselling author of blockbuster thrillers In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 comes Ruth Ware's chilling new novel. On a cool June morning, a woman is walking her dog in the idyllic coastal village of Salten along a tidal estuary known as the Reach. Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister... The next morning, three women in and around London--Fatima, Thea, and Isabel--receive the text they had always hoped would NEVER come, from the fourth in their formerly inseparable clique, Kate, that says only, "I need you." The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty, with varying states of serious and flippant nature that were disturbing enough to ensure that everyone steered clear of them. The myriad and complicated rules of the game are strict: no lying to each other--ever. Bail on the lie when it becomes clear it is about to be found out. But their little game had consequences, and the girls were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school's eccentric art teacher, Ambrose (who also happens to be Kate's father). Atmospheric, twisty, and with just the right amount of chill that will keep you wrong-footed--which has now become Ruth Ware's signature style--The Lying Game is sure to be her next big bestseller. Another unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

None of the characters was particularly likable, especially Thea and Kate. I wasn‘t terribly impressed with Isa and Fatima, either, though Fatima seemed the nicest of them all. The first half was a bit slow, and there were time shifts back to when they were younger (via Isa‘s memories), but it picked up in the second half. I felt badly for Isa‘s husband and completely sympathized with him. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin There were a few things at the end that I either didn‘t like or still confused me a bit. I did not like this as much as others by her that I‘ve read. 11mo

3rd and last book read for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
Four friends in a boarding school who participate in Lying Game. A story narrated of what happened in the past and why they need to reunite again, 17 years later due to a secret they share. Characters personalities will be described through the 4 major rules to follow in this game. But someone is lying about what happened 17 years ago. Who? Why? A new rule will be developed. ⬇️

Gissy Terrible characters, our main character was terrible, did she stop lying?
I liked this novel better but you are not going to identify with any character. Maybe for me was interesting to analyze those psychopathological aspects of their personalities? I will say that the twist was mostly predictable. The ending, well too easy maybe? Again, I think the story was unnecessarily extended but I like how the author describes the atmosphere. 3.7/3.8⭐️

Not everyone enjoys Ruth Ware, but I really liked this one. Even when I figured out who did the crime, I was hooked enough to keep listening just in case I was wrong. The narrator of the audiobook was so good. A book all about secrets between old friends, covering up even deeper secrets. Nice and twisty. #52bookclub2023 #titlebeginswiththe #bookaboutsecrets

I‘m more of a straight mystery fan, and this book leans more towards “twisty domestic noir,” but I enjoyed it nonetheless. As others have said, it could have been a little tighter, but the characters were well drawn (even if I wanted to slap the MC a few times) and the action plausible. The setting of the tumble down seaside house and dreary town also contributed to a gothic atmosphere. #authoramonth

My fifth #AuthorAMonth book for April and 3rd book for #BacklistReadathon completed.

This was an enjoyable book with some good twists, although a bit longer than it needed to be as it told the back story and current events. It did build up some good pace and tension in the second half of the book.

Eh. I‘ve only read one other Ware novel before and I didn‘t enjoy that one. This I enjoyed marginally more. Intriguing set up, but the back half is a slog. Not nearly as twisty as a mystery should be in my opinion. Also, I feel bad for Isa‘s husband. 🐑 💧 🔥 🎊 #AuthorAMonth

This was pretty good. I liked the friendships between the four MCs though it did seem strange that such close friends- guilty feelings or not- hadn't seen each other for so long. I enjoyed going along for the ride as events unfolded... right up until the end. Everything was resolved and tied up neatly but not in the ways I would have preferred so I felt let down. 🤷‍♀️

I like Ruth Ware‘s work but this one was a slog. A fine enough premise, but the author kept the audience distant from the truth for too long, which made the pace wrong. A healthy edit was really needed here.

I am a fan of Reese Witherspoon, and I love how she chooses books to create films and TV series. So, my expectations were high for this #murdermystery involving four friends who attended the same boarding school until, they were asked to leave. The girls have grown up, have careers, but still carry a secret.Cinematic feel. I definitely can see it on the big screen. It was just too long, and I was not fond of the characters.#booked2022 #192025 #2017

I‘m not typically one for mystery novels. I usually have them figured out 1/3 of the way through. However, Ware kept me on my toes with this one. Just when I thought I had the mystery solved, another element was added into this game of lies and secrets spanning over 20 years. #reesewitherspoonbookclub

Ruth Ware writes good stories and comes up with pretty engaging plots. But I dno, this was a bit long, and I was so sick of the main character towards the end. Ugh she was the worst, so whiny. The very end got me interested, but that feeling just didn‘t start early enough (and it didn‘t rly last either)

Once I realized the mystery/thriller aspect in this slow burn of a book was secondary to the character relationships, I enjoyed it. It could be an interesting a parent/teenager buddy read. Sometimes people lie because they are good at it. That same person might grow into a very responsible adult and things erroneously kept secret then could have an even greater impact later. The discussions ensuing by a buddy read could be beneficial.

kamoorephoto This one gets a lot of criticism but I absolutely loved it 🙌🏼 3y
marleed @kamoorephoto I guess because of the criticism, I went into this expecting a so-so read but ended up enjoying the whole thing. It‘s an interesting look at teenage lies kept secret for way too long. 3y
