One of the first books I read when I went vegan 20 years ago, and it‘s still a powerful read
With the world feeling increasingly and unendingly chaotic, I‘ve been drawn towards books like this lately. Many of the ideas in this book really resonated with me, so I won‘t hold it against the author that he seemed to mention that he went to Harvard at least a hundred times.
The section on “lectio divina” and other ways to deepen a spiritual connection through reading was especially interesting.
If I had read this when I was a young adult, I think it would have been a game changer for me. Instead, it seemed to reinforce lessons learned along the way. Which is not a bad thing.
Mini gingerbread scones from my fave vegan baking book. Happy holidays, all!
Not what I was expecting, but this was a thoughtful read. I‘ve often needed a hibernation of sorts, but felt too shameful to express it. Some of the essays didn‘t fully resonate with me, but I‘m glad I read this one. This Alan Watts quote, though. Dang.
Always nice to see a good Elaine in a book! Currently on book 2 of my @24in48 weekend. 6 hours in!
Excited to dig into this one! Pun intended.
Lady history getting me through my workday!
This book absolutely wrecked me. The reviews had me expecting something a bit light-hearted and what I got was something that knew all of the secret terrible things I‘ve thought and said about myself for as long as I can remember. Golly, this one came out of nowhere, which I suppose means it‘s a really good book but right now has me wanting to drop it from the top of Mount Doom.
Could use a bit of collective joy today. Just started this one on audio as I get through my daily chores.
I do love a book about loving books! Hour 9ish of my #24in48 day. Hoping to finish this one tonight!
First stop on my #24in48 stack was finishing this book about the power of female friendships. Pausing now for a quick lunch break, and to write love letters to all my female friends. Love this section from the book about America‘s favorite besties, Oprah and Gayle.
Could not believe how bad this was. Poorly written characters in poorly written situations. When the author described the lighting in a scene by comparing it to an Instagram filter, I finally gave up on it.
I wanted to LOVE this. Kids in the Hall was an obsession of mine in high school. I quoted it incessantly and used it as a litmus test for who was cool enough to be friends with. The author is clearly a fanboy, and that may be the issue. Too many opinions and not enough facts. I did very much enjoy reading the KITH origin story, but wish the group had really been involved in the making of the book. Recommended for superfans. #24in48
No one gets my sleuthing senses going like Agatha Christie! I also love this quote from the introduction. Humblebragging at its best. #24in48
Brunch time break in my #24in48 day. Slow going on this book, since every time I giggle at what I‘m reading I have to go back and read aloud to my boyfriend. Should have gotten the audiobook!
First book of 2018 and it gets all the stars. ⭐️🧘🏻♀️⭐️🧘🏽♀️⭐️🧘🏾♂️⭐️🧘🏼♂️⭐️
I was ready to bail on this one around the 50 page mark, but so glad I didn‘t. Holy moly this book snuck up on me.
“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.” -Ford Prefect, and also me when I make breakfast tacos for lunch
Becoming unstuck in time doesn‘t sound so bad somedays.
Don‘t judge me for just now getting to July‘s BOTM selection. True crime isn‘t normally a go-to for me, but this one really held my interest. The love story at the center of 67 arsons was heartbreaking and oddly relatable. Definitely recommended!
Early birthday present from my favorite fella, about my favorite Canadian sketch comedy troupe.
Reading about Lillian Boxfish has got me learning about her real life inspiration, Margaret Fishback. She's almost Ogden Nash-ier than Ogden Nash.
Used a lazy Sunday to wrap up Evelyn's story. Really enjoyed this one, although my favorite line is from the acknowledgements: "Shout louder, dream bigger, and take less shit."
After an unnecessarily emotional conversation this morning, digging in to this book after a failed start a few months ago. #werk
Commencing my annual re-read of my all-time fave book. Doing a chapter a day, reading and discussing a chapter a day with my hoopy frood of a boyfriend.
"Fury spends itself pretty quickly when there's no fury facing it."
Impulsively chosen from my library's collection of comics in Hoopla. Love me some badass derby gals!
The snow isn't stopping any time soon, so my TBR pile is getting smaller today!
The icicles in my window this morning gave me a very distinct memory of reading The Lovely Bones in one sitting, alone in a quiet house, and being thoroughly creeped out. Funny how even more than a decade after you read something, bookish memories abound. Also of note, I did not exact any icicle-related revenge.
Fascinating stuff! Vegetarian recipes dating back to 1699. I'm not totally sure I could follow these as written, but there are some interesting things in here.
First book of 2017! Seemed an appropriate way to kick off the new year.
Let the vegan baking begin! My cookbook collection definitely gets a workout this time of year. 🏋🏻♀️🍪Spicy chocolate snickerdoodles already in the oven, pumpkin cinnamon bread and apple ginger pie on deck. Happy Life Day! #nom #christmaseve
After a weeklong business trip away from home, I was craving something fun and fast to read. This fit the bill perfectly, and I read it straight through on a 4 hour flight. Big city pastry chef has a bit of a meltdown and ends up in eccentric small town Vermont, where the apple pie contest at the county fair is big business. Fair warning: this book will make you want to bake and eat all of the pies. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🍰
Not as much #readathon time as planned today, but slowly getting through my TBR stack. As someone who never got farther in to Salinger's work than the required reading in high school, I was worried this one might not hold my interest. It was a fun, fast read.
Another #booksinbars night, waiting for open mic to start.
When your digital library loan expires in a day and you haven't started the book yet.
Perfect blurb on the front of this book.
Amateur sadists, stolen trophies, and Johnny Carson. Brautigan never disappoints.
This book was not quite what I expected... not that there's anything wrong with that. But is it spongeworthy? I wanted a bit more critical analysis of the show and its impact, but got a timeline of Seinfeld history told through old interviews with writers. Fun for the superfan. 3 out of 5 tainted wedding invites ✉️✉️✉️
Cheers to the freakin' weekend! Especially when all your library holds come in!
