Holidays on Ice | David Sedaris
David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").No matter what your favorite holiday, you won't want to miss celebrating it with the author who has been called "one of the funniest writers alive" (Economist).

Some kind person put this in the #LittleFreeLibrary right in front of my building.
I especially consider it a score because most of the books put in there are for kids (there‘s a childcare next door, and it‘s a children‘s reading org that sponsors it).
And finally the door on the LFL got fixed; it recently blew off when we had particularly bad weather…

marleed I put a couple holiday books in a LFL this week. I sure hope they made someone happy! 5mo

I looked for an available audiobook that wasn‘t my typical shoomzy Christmas tale. This book was published in 1998, some of the comedy didn‘t age well, is offensive, and reminds me realize that even in our current environment of political meanness we‘ve come a long way in understanding comedy at the expense of groups of people is really not funny. His essay of translating non-English speaking traditions to English is my favorite.

DivineDiana Just starting this. I have read glowing reviews of this author, so I decided to give it a try. Based on your review, I am now a bit apprehensive, but will continue. Agree wholeheartedly about comedy at the expense of demeaning others is not funny! 5mo
marleed @DivineDiana Oh it‘s super short, so I‘d recommend you keep going because the funny parts really are good. The translated story of 6-8 black men will stay with me forever. It‘s also interesting to have an opinion but weigh it against the published date - there a lesson there that only reader‘s understand. (edited) 5mo

I have been a David Sedaris fan for a very long time, but this collection did not hit the mark for me like his earlier collections. Some of the words he uses are no longer acceptable and made me cringe. 😬 Still, the essays where Sedaris writes about childhood memories with his siblings and sharp-tongued parents shine. “The Santaland Diaries” has also been adapted into a one man play, and is a fun experience. 3⭐️#wintergames #mistletoemaniacs

Book 29- 2021: I didn‘t love all of this audiobook but I did love the story about Sedaris‘ time as a Macy‘s elf and the live section and those alone are enough to get me to recommend this book. It was funny, sad, whimsical, melancholy and often just plain strange! And it got me into the holiday spirit as my first completed ok of #wintergames2021 #teamgamesleighers #WGwordsearch 300 (then I stopped counting) Points total 326

I get why this collection isn‘t for everyone but for me, listening to Sedaris share his days as a Macy‘s Holiday Elf was priceless. And when he describes the traditions associated with Christmas Eve around the world, I was laughing out loud. I‘ve heard Sedaris read a few of these personal essays before and they are STILL just as funny. His delivery is always perfect.

Nute I just picked up David Sedaris‘s The Best of Me because I read that he is really funny. Thanks for the endorsement of that sentiment.🙂 6mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Annual #reread to get me into the awkward, dark, and hilarious holiday spirit! As usual, my favorites are his personal essays, but the short stories here are decent, too. Disturbing as hell and intentionally offensive. This book is def not for everyone, but it *is* for me. I‘ll always be grateful for the ridiculous masterpiece that is “Six to Eight Black Men” - a funny AF essay about Dutch Christmas customs.

LeahBergen I love this book. One of his best! 😆😆 6mo

The opening essay, “SantaLand Diaries” is genuinely funny. However, despite my being a Sedaris fan, and understanding that his whole schtick is humor by way of shock value and offensiveness; the subsequent essays were a slog. It is safe to say that many of these essays...did not age well.

SamAnne Right? I was so disappointed reading this collection. Really didn‘t age well. 1y

My first (and maybe last) Sedaris. SantaLand Diaries was moderately humorous, if you like observational humor that‘s dark and sarcastic. The only other one of the 12 I found remotely amusing was Six to Eight Black Men. The fictional pieces I didn‘t like at all—not his forte and some just haven‘t aged well.

There are very few things I can‘t handle or that I find offensive. The use of the “r-word” is definitely on that short list. Sedaris uses it so frequently in the first story that I had to bail. It soured the whole book for me. I still like Sedaris. I still think Let‘s Explore Diabetes with Owls is freaking hilarious. I‘ll probably read the rest of his books. But I don‘t see myself picking this particular one up again. 🧩 💙💙💙

DGRachel This was the only Sedaris I‘ve ever read/listened to and I found it so mean and offensive. I don‘t blame you for bailing. The only reason I finished was to check off a challenge prompt! 2y

I hate to pan a Sedaris book. Love his spoken word and bits on This American Life. And always loved Santaland Diaries on NPR every holiday season. But the unabridged version includes derogatory descriptions of disabled kids. The 2nd story includes a really offensive Asian caricature. I could not enjoy any of the stories that came after, save 2 he has read on TAL. #Jingleballers #WinterGames #HolidayRead #ImpulseRead @FantasyChick

SamAnne I might have cut Sedaris some slack since the writings are decades old and he has matured and become more self-aware. BUT this book is a revised and expanded edition published much more recenty. And he chose to publish the original Santa Diaries AND the super offensive story that comes after. WTH. Pan! 2y

Part of my Holiday pledge to lay down the heavy books for a of weeks and read/listen to light stuff. I always enjoy the NPR version of Sedaris‘ Santaland Diariea, but oh boy. Parts of it have not “aged well” and are downright offensive. The 2nd story in the collection was so offensive I had to skip—worst Asian stereotyping possible. Ugh. Afraid to play the next one.

This collection of six Christmas essays showcases the very dry and incredibly funny observations of family traditions during the holidays. My favourite essays are “Season‘s Greetings to Friends and Family” and “Dinah the Christmas Whore.” They are a poignant look at a highly dysfunctional family! 💖💖 #christmasgames #thefilthyanimals

Buechersuechtling Your review sounds wonderful. I‘m no big “season‘s reader” but this book makes me want to read it during Christmas time. 2y
Come-read-with-me @Buechersuechtling Sedaris isn‘t your typical seasonal read. He has a ruthless, biting humour and usually has very unique observations about daily life. There is nothing that is traditional Christmas about this book other than the title and names of each story. ☃️ I‘m not good with more traditional/happy ever after Christmas stories, so this type of acerbic book is something I really enjoy. 2y
