Holidays on Ice | David Sedaris
156 posts | 272 read | 1 reading | 93 to read
David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").No matter what your favorite holiday, you won't want to miss celebrating it with the author who has been called "one of the funniest writers alive" (Economist).

If you have ever recieved a cringe worthy Christmas letter (are there non-cringe worthy Christmas letters?), this is the story for you. This satirical letter tells of the Dunbars and their legal woes, as the mother pleads her case. PLEADS!!!! She was quite understanding when her husband's illegitimare half Vietnamese daughter showed up on her doorstep. A 33 yr old man works as a Christmas Elf in Macy's in NYC. I have read this story dozens of times. Darkly hilarious. One of my favorites in the collection. Usher elf. Exit elf. Photo elf. "I spend all day lying to people, saying, 'You look so pretty,' and 'Santa can't wait to visit with you. You're all he talks about. It's just not Christmas without you." ? #WinterGames #SlayBells #HolidayRead 20 pts @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Pretty funny collection of short holiday stories. If it wasn‘t for SantaLand Diaries I would have rated it three stars but that one bumped it up to four. Dinah, the Christmas Whore made me giggle a bit too. Highly recommend SantaLand Diaries. It had me laughing out loud. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I hate to pan a Sedaris book. Love his spoken word and bits on This American Life. And always loved Santaland Diaries on NPR every holiday season. But the unabridged version includes derogatory descriptions of disabled kids. The 2nd story includes a really offensive Asian caricature. I could not enjoy any of the stories that came after, save 2 he has read on TAL. #Jingleballers #WinterGames #HolidayRead #ImpulseRead @FantasyChick

SamAnne I might have cut Sedaris some slack since the writings are decades old and he has matured and become more self-aware. BUT this book is a revised and expanded edition published much more recenty. And he chose to publish the original Santa Diaries AND the super offensive story that comes after. WTH. Pan! 1mo

Part of my Holiday pledge to lay down the heavy books for a of weeks and read/listen to light stuff. I always enjoy the NPR version of Sedaris‘ Santaland Diariea, but oh boy. Parts of it have not “aged well” and are downright offensive. The 2nd story in the collection was so offensive I had to skip—worst Asian stereotyping possible. Ugh. Afraid to play the next one.

FantasyChick Oh no! Hopefully it gets better for you. Be sure post which stories you finish from the collection. They will each count as their own book. 1pt 1mo

This collection of six Christmas essays showcases the very dry and incredibly funny observations of family traditions during the holidays. My favourite essays are “Season‘s Greetings to Friends and Family” and “Dinah the Christmas Whore.” They are a poignant look at a highly dysfunctional family! 💖💖 #christmasgames #thefilthyanimals

Buechersuechtling Your review sounds wonderful. I‘m no big “season‘s reader” but this book makes me want to read it during Christmas time. 2mo
Come-read-with-me @Buechersuechtling Sedaris isn‘t your typical seasonal read. He has a ruthless, biting humour and usually has very unique observations about daily life. There is nothing that is traditional Christmas about this book other than the title and names of each story. ☃️ I‘m not good with more traditional/happy ever after Christmas stories, so this type of acerbic book is something I really enjoy. 2mo

DAY 27 #Holiday | I‘m a few hours early, but I had to jump on Wednesday‘s prompt with another Sedaris book because I love him so. If you don‘t laugh at the essay “Six-to-Eight Black Men,” we can‘t be friends. I‘m kidding.

Kind of.

I‘m a big fan of Sedaris and have listened to nearly all of his books (read by Sedaris himself is the best way.) I love the stories he tells based on his life and his family. They both are heartfelt and hilarious. I‘m not always crazy about the fictional stories he writes. Many are a little too sadistic, perhaps, for my taste. And horrible things happening to babies and children gets a big 👎🏻. That‘s why this is a so-so for me. 3.0⭐️ #2019

rretzler Not to be missed are Santaland Diaries and Six to Eight Black Men. The rest perhaps are so-so, meh and some not at all good. 6mo
KathyWheeler @rretzler Those were the only two I really loved. One story was downright offensive and the rest were just meh. 6mo
rretzler @KathyWheeler I agree. I‘m guessing we perhaps found the same one offensive. I was actually a little sick to my stomach after reading one of them, and it takes a lot to bother me. 6mo
See All 10 Comments
Blueberry I agreed also. Did not finish. 6mo
rretzler @Blueberry Definitely disappointing as Sedaris books go. 6mo
AutumnRLS This was my first Sedaris and I didn't care for it at all. Perhaps I should go back and read others based on this comment? What should I start with? 6mo
rretzler @AutumnRLS I just finished Calypso and enjoyed it but I could relate to it because it‘s about getting older and taking care of aging parents. I recall I enjoyed Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames, but it‘s been years since I read/listened to them. I also recall enjoying Naked but I didn‘t like Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk. You could try listening to some of his stories/books on ⬇️ 6mo
rretzler @AutumnRLS YouTube to see if you like them before investing in the books. I found both Me Talk Pretty One Day and When You Are Engulfed in Flames read by Sedaris on YouTube. IMO his “nonfiction” stories are the best - ones based on himself and his family. I don‘t particularly care for his fiction. 6mo
AutumnRLS @rretzler I have When You Are Engulfed in Flame on a shelf and I think I have Naked in a box somewhere. Definitely will have to give him another chance. 6mo
rretzler @AutumnRLS I read some of them the first time through, but I think they are much better when you hear him reading them. He has this deadpan delivery that makes it all the more hilarious. I highly recommend listening for the best experience 6mo

As with many books that contain short stories, this was a mixed bag of sorts. Some stories were funnier than others and there were many laugh out loud moments sprinkled throughout. Sedaris definitely has a twisted sense of humor which for the most part, I appreciated. The unevenness of the short collection as a whole is what keeps me from giving the book a full thumbs up though.

Reviewsbylola I want to listen to this and also Augustan Burroughs‘s holiday stories. Thanks for the reminder! 14mo
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I‘m listening to Augusten‘s now, lol! I love him, but he‘s not a great audio narrator. 14mo

Holidays on Ice | David Sedaris

Pickpick

I loved listening to this! David Sedaris lends himself so well to audio. And the stories were just up my alley: displaying the underbelly of the Christmas holiday in all of its ridiculous glory. 🎅🏼🎄😆

Holidays on Ice | David Sedaris

Because I read Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, and now I need to read all of the rest of the books by David Sedaris! These are the ones that were in at the library today... more coming soon. 📚

Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare I would recommend leaving the diaries till last. I think he's on fire when he tackles a subject at length, but I found Theft by Finding had a lot of mundane observations. There's gems scattered about in the diaries, but his other stuff is nothing but gems from start to finish 1y
CoffeeNBooks @Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Thanks for the insight! I will put the diaries on the bottom of the stack. 1y
Jadams1776 If you can find the audiobook for Holidays on Ice, I wholeheartedly recommend it just for his rendition of Away in a Manger. David Sedaris + audio is the best. 1y

brandybear22 I really enjoyed squirrel seeks chipmunk, although I‘m not usually one for short stories. Enjoy your sedaris finds! 1y
Angelaatreadingrock I agree, jadams1776. Sedated + audio is the best! 1y
