Quiet
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking | Susan Cain
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh's sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer. Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts. Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts--from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert." This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.

This book was pretty interesting and informative. I enjoyed learning a little more about myself. However, I did find the book to be a little repetitive at times. I felt like it could have been a little shorter, making it more effective. Overall, it was well done.

Finished this one and while I didn‘t learn anything mind blowing or earth shattering, it was nice to read a book about us quiet ones. I kind of expected more about how to thrive as an introvert in a world that prizes extroversion and while there was some of that, it was a lot of science about what makes introverts, well, introverts. Still incredibly fascinating just not EXACTLY what I was picturing. Definitely recommend either way. #nfnov

#TIL numerous studies have found that open office floor plans can have negative results including reduced productivity, impaired memory, higher turnover, sicker staff, hostility, lack of motivation and more aggressive.

Yikes! #nfnov

jb72 I can understand that, but I also think it depends on other factors too. Especially whether you like your coworkers or not. 3mo
Kaila-ann @jb72 I‘m sure that does play a factor as well. Still, having absolutely no quiet or privacy has got to be exhausting at times too. 3mo
jb72 @Kaila-ann For sure it is. I‘ve worked in a few “open” spaces. Sometimes it feels like you‘re being watched constantly by a supervisor instead of being trusted to do your job. 3mo

Clwojick I, 100% can back that. I got along great with most of my coworkers, which was almost more of a distraction 😆 4 pt. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I definitely think it can depend on the size of the workforce as well - I didn't mind when I worked in a small law office with three other paralegals, but in a situation like the one pictured it seems like it would be rather hellish! 3mo
Kaila-ann @Clwojick agreed! Sometimes getting along/being friends with your coworkers is almost worse lol. 3mo
Kaila-ann @TheAromaofBooks I couldn‘t do it on this scale at all. We have a smaller, open office where I work now. For the most part I don‘t mind but there are days that I wish I had a quiet closet to work in, away from noise and distraction. I just have to put my headphones in and try to focus 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo

#SelfImprovementSept - Self-Help Book: We we‘re sitting around the dinner table and the conversation turned to “who is amongst the boisterous extroverted representatives of our family and friends?” Why are eyes gazing in my direction? You cannot imagine the shock and the dismay when I realized that my own family and close friends do not get me. I am purely 💯 an introvert on all levels.👇🏽

Nute Yes, I can be overtly expressive at times and even sometimes “ the life of the party,” but my preferred behavior is as described in this book. This was one of my favorite books of the year so far. As an introvert, I've felt misplaced or like I didn't fit well and this really helped me see the traits I have as a strength. It also had a wonderful section on relationships with extroverts that I made my husband listen to that was very enlightening. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to connect more closely with themselves or introverted loved ones in their lives. Truly fascinating.

The tagged book is an empowering book for introverts like me, because too often we are ignored in favour of the louder people. The book opens with an extremely powerful example of an introvert whose quiet protest began to change the world - that introvert was Rosa Parks.

Everyone in a Western culture (where the Extrovert Ideal prevails) should read this book. Introverts need to read it to become aware of how important their voice is, and how they can use it. Extroverts need to read it to understand why it is so important to take a moment to listen, really listen, to the quiet ones.

Just reminding myself that I better get moving even when it‘s still and forever cold. Do those of you who deal with this winter on a regular basis ever dream of flying down south just to experience warm temperatures for an hour or so and then flying back? #litsywalkers @kaye

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yep, and we talk about if we ever move it will be somewhere warmer, and this year it was especially dismal so we joked that if next year goes the same way we are investing in one of those sun lamps. 😂 11mo
saguarosally @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well golly if it‘s that dismal why do humans even live up North? I mean it looks like winter is like eight months and then it gets slightly warm. #readyfor115degrees 11mo
Kaye In answer to your question , I think all winter about how nice it‘d be to live where the winters aren‘t so long. A couple of years , we went to Myrtle Beach or Smoky Mtns in the spring. It was so nice to peel off the coats and see flowers blooming and sunshine. The bad part of it is that once you get home , it‘s still cold , grey and ugly , so it‘s harder to come back to. It‘s easier just to stay here and wait it out I think. 11mo

I‘m an introvert. I‘ve always been one. But sometimes I can pretend I‘m an extrovert. This book was affirming and gave me the inner peace about why I am the way I am. Just because I‘m an intro doesn‘t mean I hate socializing. I just prefer a different kind of socializing. I married an extro but he‘s the only person in my life who doesn‘t drain me.
