Security: A Novel | Gina Wohlsdorf
Original and imaginative . . . Ripping suspense, sheer terror, and a wrenching love story. Sandra Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Friction The terrible truth about Manderley is that someone is always watching. Manderley Resort is a gleaming, new twenty-story hotel on the California coast. Its about to open its doors, and the world--at least those with the means to afford it--will be welcomed into a palace of opulence and unparalleled security. But someone is determined that Manderley will never open. The staff has no idea that their every move is being watched, and over the next twelve hours they will be killed off, one by one. Writing in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King, and with a deep bow to Daphne du Maurier, author Gina Wohlsdorf pairs narrative ingenuity and razor-wire prose with quick twists, sharp turns, and gasp-inducing terror. Security is grand guignol storytelling at its very best. A shocking thriller, a brilliant narrative puzzle, and a multifaceted love story unlike any other, Security marks the debut of a fearless and gifted writer. Be surprised, be very surprised: Gina Wohlsdorf brings more than just plot twists and a terrifically tender love story to this thriller . . . Its her playful homage to Hitchcock and du Maurier that had me reading, howling, and just plain loving this novel. Sara Gruen, author of At the Waters Edge Grand Hotel meets Psycho in the age of surveillance . . . Security is cinematically vivid, crisply written, and sharp enough to cut . . . Wohlsdorf brilliantly subverts our expectations of the action genre in this smart, shocking, poignant thriller. Emily Croy Barker, author of The Thinking Womans Guide to Real Magic The thrill of this novel goes beyond its wickedly clever, split-screen, high-tech wizardrya kind of video gamers literary retake of Hitchcocks Rear Window--and emanates from its strange, disembodied narrator . . . The effect is terrifying, sexy, dizzying, and impossible to look away from. Tim Johnston, author of Descent Shocking and filled with Tarantino-ish dark humor. . . Structurally reminiscent of the amazing Jennifer Egan,Wohlsdorfs book is certainly a hybrid, like nothing else. Get ready. Ann Beattie, author of The State Were In Flawless . . . Security is perfectly tuned for blockbuster status . . . They dont make a hotel big enough to house all the people who will want to read this, and soon, as in Manderley, all eyes will be on Wohlsdorf. Daniel Kraus, Booklist, starred review

An interesting story about what goes wrong in the most secure high end hotel in the world. An interesting narrator follows the path of destruction via security cameras. Far more spicy than I expected, but not off putting. I really enjoyed this one!!!

ImperfectCJ This is one that's really stuck with me. I have a generational interpretation that I haven't seen anyone else share...the Millennials are in danger because of the irresponsible actions of the Baby Boomers and saved because of unnoticed/forgotten GenX behind the scenes. The killers themselves are outside the generational framework in this interpretation, like a natural disaster. The ages fit decently, but it likely wasn't intentional. 1y

So this book has bits where you're getting 3 concurrent viewpoints, as if you're watching security cameras. I'm really impressed and think it's a super cool device!! Unreliable characters make it that much better!!

Tbh, in between pick and so-so. More thriller than horror. More gory than it needed to be. And by the end, more questions than answers. Still a high anxiety chilling read.

Horror/thriller about a killer in a luxurious, high-tech hotel with the best security, 24 hours before it opens.

I think it would have been more enjoyable if I hadn‘t read it as an eBook. The formatting was messed up making it hard to follow.

This was not a mystery as I initially thought but it was a pretty taught thriller especially as it reached the ending. It entails the pre-opening machination that are taking place in a luxury hotel which is touted as being the most secure ever. The structure is so cool as the page breaks up into a grid like the screens showing views from two or more security cameras and the text in each grid describes different activities in each then comes back⬇️

amb Together seamlessly. Told from a mysterious point of view that doesn‘t come together until the last third or so. highly enjoyable 6y

Readathon book #1
A cross between a slasher flick and a love story. It definitely reminded me of a high tech version of Hitchcock‘s Psycho, where the surveillance may both hurt and help the hotel employees as they get picked off one by one.

Day 5: Underrated Book

I don't understand how this book doesn't get more love than it does. Deep down, this book is like Scream but in book form. An gift to horror fans, this book contains nods to Rebecca, the Shining, and other fantastic horror novels and movies. #ReadingResolutions #day5 #UnderratedBook I don‘t think this book has gotten the love it deserves. I thoroughly enjoyed Security, it‘s a fast paced, maybe a bit predictably gory, novel that I read in one sitting coz I didn‘t want to put it down. It certainly deserves more than its 3⭐️ rating on Goodreads & it‘s 64% here. If @Liberty loves it & I love it, you should give it another chance. Coz we both rock a good thriller!🤘

Sansa decided she wanted to be in on the fun!
I liked the premise of the story - but I think I just didn‘t like the style of the story telling.
Overall it reminded me of trying to read a Saw film!
There is also a Placebo video that is narrated by Bret Easton Ellis which is narrated from several different perspectives - that kept flashing in my mind.
Think reviews of this book will depend on whether you can put up with the style.

1.) Security by Gina Wohlsdorf - I work in a hotel. It takes place in a hotel. 😬
2.) Gingerdread Man 2 - just don‘t.
3.) I work in a hotel that I‘m fairly positive is haunted. Lots of spooky crap happens there

#HallowReads #day15 #SomeonesWatchingSunday This is the ultimate voyeuristic thriller, I really enjoyed this fairly short novel. Set in a new, state of the art hotel which is about to have its opening night. The Manderley Resort is an opulent 5star hotel with a security system that's second to none. But 12hrs before opening, someone is using that system to pick off employees one by one in the most gruesome manner until there's no one left.

Ok, so if you were on board for my last recommendation, here's another incredible book! This is a thriller/slasher set in a luxury hotel. The staff is finishing last minute prep work for the grand opening, and then people start getting murdered. The structure of the story is a little different, but it all comes together. In the right hands, this would be an amazing movie, but it'd have to be really long to fit in all the awesome!

I really enjoyed this book! Definitely the right book to get me out of my "cozy crime" rut. It was thrilling, it was terrifying, there were times when I was yelling at the book to "Look behind you, you idiot!" The fact that there was a love story entwined in all that horror just made it all the more surreal, but it really worked. Highly recommend to fans of Big Brother, Halloween(the movie) & Alfred Hitchcock.
