Dark Places: A Novel | Gillian Flynn
post image
Pickpick

Dark Places: 5⭐️ I started this book a year ago and put it down because I related too much to the main character and her angst. But jeez was that a mistake. Once I got through the first half again, I read the other 175 pages in a day. The ending... did NOT see that coming.
Gillian Flynn has an incredible ability to describe such minute things that you‘d never take much notice of, but can totally relate to when she says it. Read this book!

In a Dark Dark Wood: 3.9⭐️ Ruth Ware‘s distinctive voice really sets her apart from other british crime novelists. However, I really like twists that you can‘t possibly see coming, so I found this one a bit predictable. Overall, it was a great first book, and I can‘t wait to read her other ones which I heard are even better ☺️ (bradley didn‘t care for my opinions and just wanted to be let inside for some cookies😜)

The Dharma Bums | Jack Kerouac

The Dharma Bums 5⭐️: I absolutely needed this. We all need this right now.
It was also really cool to read about my old stomping grounds and realize that for years I lived like two blocks away from the main characters‘ homes and hangouts in San Francisco. It‘s strange to picture him walking down exact streets and into stores that I thought only belonged in my world.

✨Dharma Bums refusing to subscribe to the general demand that they consume production and therefore have to work for the privilege of consuming…all of them imprisoned in a system of work, produce, consume, I see a vision of a great rucksack revolution...millions of young Americans wandering around with rucksacks, going up to mountains to pray, making children laugh and old men glad, making young girls happy and old girls happier✨jack kerouac

a note to my postal book clubs..✨ I have both books ready to go, but seeing as how my state has implemented a mandated stay at home order, which is most likely going to be enforced by law in the coming days, I doubt I will be able to mail them on time 😭 I also doubt you want mail from CA anyway right now lol @mngraham @TorieStorieS @inthegreensandblues @SumisBooks @laurenslibrary @Melismatic @Julie548 @Shakespearience @jessinikkip @WriterAtHeart

jessinikkip Oh no! I for one would rather you stay in and safe than sorry about mailing books. You take care of you 4y
BeansPage Okay I may have a solution: What if instead you chose a free book on Amazon? Not just on KU but free for all on Amazon. We could all grab it up and that could be your book for the month of April. Hopefully by the time May rolls around you will be able to go to the post office. Do you want to try that or should we just keep your spot open and you can sit this round out? I want you to be safe above all. 4y
ameliashley @SumisBooks that‘s a great idea! let me take a look at them and I‘ll get back to you ☺️ 4y

Melismatic @ameliashley I feel similarly in NYC, and have no car to get from place to place - so I might do the same a pick an ebook if that works best for y‘all. 😭 Hoping everyone is at home & safe! @SumisBooks @WriterAtHeart @Julie548 @laurenslibrary @jessinikkip @Shakespearience (edited) 4y
inthegreensandblues No worries, these things are low priority under the circumstances! I hope you are doing OK. I suspect my county is about to go under mandatory stay at home too; the metro area we're just outside of (KC) has it starting Tuesday. 4y

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: 2⭐️ I know this is a favorite for a lot of readers, but I couldn‘t get past the language and tone used by the writer and his characters.
I know it was written in 1994 but I would expect people to be more woke than this back then. The writer gave himself the freedom to change character names and entire events so he should have also taken the liberty of not using highly offensive identifiers and language.

ATB Not sure how old you are but nobody was Woke in 94. No excuses but pretty much the truth. 4y
LadybugAnni One of my favorite! 4y

Pretty Girls: A Novel | Karin Slaughter

Oy vey, never have I read a book so quickly! Like all the reviews say, it‘s not for the faint of heart but Karin Slaughter‘s voice is so relatable that the material seems easier to stomach somehow. If you‘re a fan of hers, lmk which of her books I should read next!

Enchanted_Bibliophile I've read and loved all her books! This one being my favourite! Only thing I can suggest is going back to the start and read them all.😊 4y
tpixie I love this Author - but I haven‘t read her in years. maybe I had to give her a try again. My book clubs prohibit me from reading my normal reads! 4y
Pageturner1 I started reading her recently. I started with Blindsighted. I liked it. I look forward to reading more of her books. 4y

So many feelings about this book. Some pages could not speak more to my soul. Others I couldn‘t specifically relate to and just felt so much for both Plath and the character. Truly listening and giving attention and respect to those suffering around us could not be more important in this day and age 💛

Cathythoughts Lovely pic ✨💕 4y
fleeting The only adult book I've read 3 times! I've worked on Plath and all her writings during my last year in uni. Suffice to say I'm obsessed! 4y

This little book is supposed to be a horror but it‘s too beautifully written to be all that scary. The imagery of the English countryside and daily life was just what I needed to hold me over until I can visit my boyfriend again in England ✈️ Hill‘s writing is so dreamy and I was feeling so nostalgic to go back that I was actually like down to live in this haunted house.

bookgem I think there is a movie from this book. Am not sure... The Harry Potter actor (oh no, don't hate me I can't remember his name) Radcliff? 😬 It was good. Creepy, dark gothic story. 4y
ameliashley @bookgem ya! can‘t wait to watch it 4y

Mehso-so

Ann Rule is the true queen of true crime so it kills me (bad pun) to rate this as so-so... but a lot of what is written is repeated multiple times, word for word. And after 680 pages it‘s a little much.
But I will always be an Ann Rule fan and can‘t wait to read her other books that are growing in this tbr pile over here... #llamas and #truecrime

Librariana Completely unrelated to your post (although I love me some Ann Rule!), but when I saw your "SSDGM", I was like "Yessss"!! ?????? Love me some Karen and Georgia!! Loved their book, too ? 4y

I absolutely loved this book! It‘s so well written, keeping every account of a disease outbreak interesting yet still realistic.
It‘s obvious in her writing that McKenna knows what she‘s talking about and isn‘t a newbie in the public health world.
And it‘s definitely the motivation I needed to finish the last quarter of my MPH so I can get out into the field!

VioletBramble This looks interesting. Good luck with the MPH. And welcome to Litsy! 4y
