Couple Next Door
Couple Next Door | Shari Lapena
I read this novel at one sitting, absolutely riveted by the storyline. The suspense was beautifully rendered and unrelenting! Sue Grafton, """New York Times"""bestselling author of"""X""" Meticulously crafted and razor-sharp. THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR lingers long after you turn the final page. Harlan Coben, #1"New York Times"bestselling author of "Fool Me Once""""Provocative and shocking. --Lisa Gardner, the"New York Times" bestsellingauthor of"Find Her" "How well do you know the couple next door? Or your husband? Or even yourself? " "People are capable of almost anything. . ." "A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . ." Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story. Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years. What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist."

This book kept me reading because I needed to know what happened to the baby. But I struggled with it because every single character was awful and one-dimensional- except the detective who was one-dimensional but not awful. Even the town had zero atmosphere or local color, it could have been anywhere.
I've liked a previous book by this author so I'll give her another try in the future.

You will need to take a Dramamine in order to cope with the nonstop twists and turns of this literary roller coaster. This is a finish-in-a-day book, very fast, and full of flawed people with desperate motives. Between the wild emotional dynamics of the main family and the behind the scenes shenanigans of said main family, this book will keep you guessing! But legit, it‘s very twisty, so be ready for that reading whiplash!

These people were BANANAS 🤣!!! I don‘t think there was one character, except maybe the police officers, who weren‘t shady little liars. I love unreliable characters but this was almost too much. You can‘t believe anything they say or do so you can‘t really guess where the storyline is going. If you just go along with the ride, which is what I ended up doing, it was a wild ride that I enjoyed. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

A thrilling and haunting story of a father who staged a kidnapping of his own infant daughter to ask for ransom money from his father in law. The neighbors next door know more to the story than the detectives and police on the scene, so how far will this horrendous scandal go on in the hopes for some seed money for his failing business? Twists and turns will hit you out of nowhere.

3.75⭐
This was ok. It held my attention but took me a long time to read for it being such a short book. I didn't care about any of the characters and thought them to be pretty dumb, so I didn't care much about what happened.
I predicted quite a few of the big twists, as well.
Overall.. just meh. 🤷‍♀️

It was ok. A lazy afternoon‘s read, one of those thrillers with the twists and turns that give you whiplash but I‘ll probably forget all about tomorrow.

MicheleinPhilly I read this a few years ago but literally couldn‘t tell you a thing about it. I promptly stuffed it in an LFL and haven‘t been inspired to pick up anything else by this author. 2y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly I read another one a couple of weeks ago and it was a lot better than this. This is the debut I think. But I probably won‘t put myself out for anymore. 2y
batsy I enjoyed this one, but I am always up for a locked room type mystery with a killer on the loose and a snowstorm outside 😆 2y

“I think she was hurt that I wasn‘t that interested in her pregnancy. We had less in common. Then, when the baby was born, it took up all her time. I understand that—she was exhausted—but she became less interesting, if you know what I mean.” Cynthia pauses and crosses her long legs. “I think she should have gone back to work after the baby was a few months old, but she didn‘t want to. I think she felt she had to be the perfect mother.”

DesireeFromBK This quote was a bit of a gut punch for me as a new mommy. I do wonder if this is what my still single friends secretly think of me now that my life is pretty much all about my little one. 2y

A hot mess, but in a (mostly) good way. Sucked me in from the very beginning. I was screaming at my Kindle by the end of the first few pages. A preposterous, but fun and easy read. If you enjoy a twisty, convoluted plot and questionable characters, you'll love this one.

The twists definitely kept coming in this one! I would think that “THIS” must be the big twist, wrong!

My #blackcat wanted in with the #blackstack. Nerd. I was really digging this book up until the last two chapters & then I was kinda pissed. Before that though, I thought it was very twisty & I kept finding myself second-guessing my hunches. I was sucked in by the storyline of a kidnapped baby while her parents were next door. If the ending hadn't been so unnecessary? Maybe? this would have been a solid pick but as is it's a soft pick for me. ⭐⭐⭐💫

Wow, I didn't think I'd read this in one sitting,. But here we are. I started this around 12pm.and at 11pm I am finished and it was a wild ride, there were so many twists and turns I did not see coming. Wild. Great story. The writing felt a bit choppy to me, but overall, it was well done.

#TheCoupleNextDoor totally reminded me of Madeleine McCain case. A couple goes to dinner next door leaving their 6 months old daughter behind while she is asleep. They take rounds coming back home and making sure she is alright. And then she is not. She is kidnapped. What happens next is a lot of twists and turns. It keeps you glued to the book till the end. A good mystery read.
My rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A couple leaves their baby home while they're at a dinner party next door, & even though they check on her every 1/2 hour, she's missing when they return. All the characters are hard to like, & they're all possibly the culprit. This book was twisty & suspenseful, but some of it was hard to swallow - while I love a book where nothing is as it seems & everyone's a suspect, this one may have taken it a bit too far for me. Still, an entertaining read.

KathyWheeler I have an issue with the premise. I haven‘t read the book, but I would never have left either of my babies home alone even just to go next door. I would‘ve gotten a babysitter. 4y
BookDragonNotWorm @KathyWheeler I agree completely! Even though it was an important plot point - that they'd had a babysitter who canceled, and were 'only' going next door in an attached row house, I still thought it was unbelievable. 4y
KathyWheeler @BookDragonNotWorm Yeah, if my babysitter canceled on me, I‘d have stayed home. Being in another house than your baby, even if it‘s attached and you check on the baby frequently, is just too problematic. 4y

I was disappointed in this book. I liked the other two thrillers of hers that I had read so much. But this portrayed the mom's issues in a way that I believe to be inaccurate and leads to harmful misconceptions about certain difficulties. If it weren't for those glaring errors, it would have been a good book.

💛💛💛 I'm really undecided whether I liked this book or not. It relied on the husband being a massive moron to approach the situation as he did and just seemed all far fetched and ridiculous. On the other hand it was fast paced and did keep my interest in how it would all play out.

Hhhjjjnsjehdhwjd I see what you mean about the husband being a moron, but he was also desperate, right? When people are desperate & scared they do stupid things. & that husband was REALLY desperate. 3y
