Pickpick

I pick this up a few months ago at Costco and just finished reading it tonight.
It may not be the best Holocaust story I've read, but it professes to be a novel of a true account, and from that standpoint I was not disappointed. In fact I appreciated the novelesque element of hope.
This novel may be a great place to start reading more, a gateway into the history.

I'd heard a lot about this book before I picked it up. I do think it meets expectations for a YA novel.
I like the way the characters develop. The title does warn you though - it's bittersweet.

I listened to this as an unabridged audiobook. I had great expectations, but I had many feelings that Dickens was paid by the word as I listened.

Currently reading, started yesterday.
It's a great recovery from surgery book I don't want to go out and see any people anymore already.

tomcat Finished it last night at 2am! I went back and forth from the print and a library copy of the audiobook to get it completed. 5y

The premise of the story is good and I was initially hooked. I came out of the book with a rather sharp dislike, if not hatred for the main characters. They all needed to get out of their own selfish bullshit, and there were only mediocre redemptions at the end. Maybe I'm especially jaded about others holding selfish "love" and vilifying gay people at the same time. If that is the only way you can love them (or me) fuck you, don't waste my time.

Reggie Lol what?!!!! The book was set in the 80‘s, and they were all lost in their grief for the uncle/brother/lover who had just died. It‘s ok, I think books strike different nerves in all of us sometimes. I couldn‘t make it past the first story in the Immortalist. 5y
tomcat Yes, things do hit people differently. I agree that they all had grief for Finn, but it was all selfish grief. His lover / partner husband of 9 years was practically vilified. The main characters were all stuck in their issues. The sister couldn't love her brother. The nieces couldn't love each other. The love one niece had for the uncle was special, but it had to be "twisted". 5y
tomcat I stayed up late to finish the book and I'm still angry enough that I haven't been able to go to sleep yet. :) 5y

tomcat All this selfish love and straight grief... maybe things would have been better if they had actually really loved each other and their gay relations while they were alive. Ugh. 5y
tomcat Now that I've had a little sleep: I lived through that time. I am a couple of the letters in LGBT. I have family that "loves" me like this - for what I do for them or how I make them feel. As soon as I'm suffering and could use some support, they're gone. 5y
Reggie I‘m gay and I felt they were all victims of the time. None of them knew much about HIV, they blamed the bf for giving it to the uncle even though it was the other way around and I like books like this because I think those women in the book will meet other gays and other people with HIV and feel more compassionate. Also seeing some of the other comments on this book, I think it has helped others in their views. But I‘m sorry, I think that‘s 5y
Reggie family sometimes AND relationships, as much as the ideal would be 50-50 it almost never is. It sucks, believe me I know. Lol 5y
Reggie And if you need a gay pick me up try Almost Like Being In Love by Steve Kruger. It‘s so sweet. 5y
tomcat I'll confess it hit raw nerves for me. 5y

I lived through the 80s but was a little too young to be completely embroiled in the Holocaust that AIDS wrought. I do remember.
This was an excellent fictional read that brought back the memories.
If you didn't live through this time, you should read this.

tomcat I've checked some other reviews since posting. Several mentioned that they thought the 2015 story wasn't strong enough or that it was a distraction. I disagree - telling the story of the few that survived is just as important. If the 2015 timeline feels more empty, it is. It is haunted by those who didn't make it to the new century as they should have. 5y

Deja-book-view.
As I was reading the book, I realized I'd seen the movie and forgotten that I'd watched it.
Of course the book is better.

I'm halfway through this book and I already recommend it.
I'm also having a surreal moment.
I hear kids screaming outside. Playing. As I'm reading about riots in another neighborhood where it's not safe for kids to play.
My heart hurts.

Peter Darling | Austin Chant

This was kind of fascinating.
The psychological Trope that's always been played in Peter Pan is that Captain Hook is really the Darling father. Generally, the same actor will play both.
In this book there's a twist. Peter and Wendy are the same person. Wendy is a trans boy, who becomes a real boy through Peter. This is also a m/m romance.
#transbook #transbooks

RadicalReader @tomcat most interesting version of Peter Pan that I have ever heard of!! Never would have thought that Hook and Darling father were ever the same person 6y
tomcat I believe that has been the theatre tradition since the beginning, having the same actor play Mr Darling and Captain Hook. It's been done that way in several movies as well, it is the same actor in the Disney version doing both voices. 6y

The best part about this book is the language. The use of English is visceral, tactile, and flat out gorgeous.

Little & Lion | Brandy Colbert

I very much enjoyed this fabulous book, written from the point of view of Little, the little sister in a blended family of Black, White and Jewish. Her brother Lionel (aka Lion) has been diagnosed as having bipolar disorder and she is wondering if she is bisexual.
I can't stress enough how well this book captures these issues within these characters.
I had a Boy Scout who Lion reminded me of. The process of his discovery was very similar.

A new friend suggested these. Suzanne Collins wrote this series before the Hunger Games.
I am enjoying the series, it's quite imaginative. I would suggest this series for boys!

I am listening to the audiobook. As Carly Simon herself is reading it, it's a little more interesting. She adds music and singing to her reading.
It is a sex, rock and roll story. Interesting if you're interested.

This book was gifted to me by my longest term friend, with the comment that he figured I had time to read during my surgery recovery.
Some of the turns here were unexpected. I found it a stark example of what power and control does to society in general and people in particular.

I had just come out of surgery, and my boyfriend was watching a show about books. He recommended this book to me, so, still shaking off anaesthesia, I grabbed the kindle version.
It took me a bit to get into it, probably due to my mental state, but once I was in - what a ride.
The authors' note at the end put it over the top. I am so pleased that she took such incredible pain and created a work of art.
I'll look forward to the next installment!!
