Great Expectations
Great Expectations | Charles Dickens
One of the finest novels by iconic British author Charles Dickens, this Victorian tale follows the good-natured orphan Pip as he makes his way through life. As a boy, Pip crosses paths with a convict named Magwitch, a man who will heavily influence Pips adulthood. Meanwhile, the earnest young man falls for the beautiful Estella, the adoptive daughter of the affluent and eccentric Miss Havisham. Widely considered to be Dickens's last great book, the story is steeped in romance and features the writer's familiar themes of crime, punishment, and societal struggle.

Overall a pick. I preferred David Copperfield in general, but the atmosphere of this book was well done, especially the bittersweetness that crept in as the story came to a close.

RachelAmphlett This and A Tale of Two Cities are two of my favs - I need to read David Copperfield! 1mo
rabbitprincess @RachelAmphlett I want to read David Copperfield again to go with the upcoming movie -- although I will likely be reading it after watching the movie at this rate. (edited) 4w

Are there any books you wish you'd read sooner? I wish I'd taken the opportunity to read Dickens while my grandfather was alive. He loved Dickens, and I know he would've appreciated the opportunity to talk about him with me. PSA: if there's an older person in your life, read the books they love NOW, even if they're not “your thing“. Full list of books I wish I'd read sooner here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/books-i-wish-id-read-sooner/

Cedricsmom I wish I‘d read Great Expectations sooner. Had I known that I‘d like it so much, I would have read it years ago. 2mo
Scochrane26 I definitely wish I had started reading Wendell Berry earlier. But I‘m not sure I would have been patient enough for his books at a younger age. 2mo
keepingupwiththepenguins @Scochrane26 hahaha that's the trick, isn't it? There's a few authors that I love now and I wish I could've spent longer loving... but would I have been able to appreciate them as much when I was younger? No way to tell. 2mo
Cedricsmom This is why it seems like classics are wasted on youth. When we‘re young we haven‘t lived long enough or experienced enough in life to understand the classics. If we live past 50, we can dive in deep to these glorious books. 2mo

I want to get back into Litsy but figuring out when to jump in is making me hesitate, so I‘m just gonna do it. I decided I hated Dickens as a teen (based on Hard Times and half of David Copperfield) but now I figured I should get my big-girl masters-in-English-Lit-graduate britches on and deal with it. Halfway through now, and whaddya know, it‘s pretty good.

Nearly there!

Great Expectations is both stunningly emotive and a complete slog. One minute I'm crying real tears in a way that I rarely do with modern novels, the next I'm considering a rage quit out of sheer frustration.

A difficult book to chew for the mostpart (I've been reading it for months), and yet with some truly stunning plotpoints and dramatic scenes!

Liatrek Exactly how I feel 😊I started this at the beginning of the year and still haven‘t finished. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead There are some amazing moments.... a twist I didn't see coming, some great characters that you feel for.... so many words though! I've read some sentences 5 times and still wasn't sure what he was trying to say 😂😂 2mo

Book #30: Great Expectations was one of Dickens' last novels, and by far one of his best. The novel follows Pip, a street orphan, as he is saved by a convict and eventually grows up to find love. While reading through the story it can be a bit slow at times but overall the story is well written and easy to follow. This book, along with most...

“[I]s or is not, that‘s the way things are. The colour of the day. The way it felt to be a child. The saltwater on your sunburnt legs. Sometimes the water is yellow, sometimes it‘s red. But what colour it may be in memory, depends on the day. I‘m not going to tell you the story the way it happened. I‘m going to tell it the way I remember it.”

#StarTrekSummerMay | 6: #Clues

📷: Made with Typorama

Megabooks Really interesting choice of quote! I like it. I had to think about it. 👍🏻🖖🏻 7mo
LiterRohde I had to look up the episode because clues wasn‘t doing it for me. So I went with memory and how it‘s not as permanent as we think. There‘s reality and then there‘s memory. (edited) 7mo
LiterRohde The way I understand the episode (I‘m afraid I‘ve never seen it 😱) is that Data was the one who understood the full reality of the situation and in the end, told the story the way he wanted the rest of the crew to remember it, not the way it really happened. 7mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde Well, Picard ordered Data to keep the encounter with the aliens secret, but there were too many clues that showed that instead of passing quickly through a wormhole, they had a longer encounter. So they had to redo the mind/time erase. In short. 😉 7mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks Ok. So not the way he WANTED to tell it, but the way he was ORDERED to tell he. He knew the reality of the wormhole and isolationist civilization and the rest of the crew did not. They lived with a memory or story that was not reality. Anyway, I‘m overthinking things and this episode sounds quite trippy. And I need to do some work instead of trying to make sure my quote fits. It‘s all that pressure from that “words of wisdom” stuff. 🤣 7mo

I have never seen an adaptation or even heard the story of Great Expectations before, so I went in blind. I loved the descriptive language and humor that is typical of Dickens, and I really enjoyed the gothic touches. The main characters aren‘t very likable, but that didn‘t stop me from rooting for Pip to get it together, enjoying Miss Havisham and her drama, and appreciating Abel.

George despises him , so every time anyone posts about him, George has to start complaining about it. Then he tags me so I‘ll SEE his complaint. I‘ve repeatedly told him he has the right to dislike any author, but everyone else has the right to like them.
