Picking 3 I hated again!
1.The Alchemist-shallow and silly
2.Gormenghast-self indulgent, verbose, sexist,Peake has never spoken to a human woman in his life clearly.
3.The secret history - so very pretentious

Posting a bunch that I did earlier!
Utterly baffled by how 50 Shades,Ready Player One and Flowers in the attic can be on a list along with Their eyes were watching God,Things fall apart and Lord of the Rings.I have read Mills&Boons category romances more nuanced than the former three. So that's my 3 against 3!My review of Steinbecks Red pony(not in this list

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs
This was one of my absolute favourite, edge of the seat adventure books when I was a kid.I could probably read it now and still love it!
From a children's book, definitely George Kirrin of The Famous Five, not perfect at all, straining against the constraints of girlhood,a clever rebellion against expected behaviours.
I read The Long Goodbye and would give it all the stars!!

“Astha was brought up properly, as befits a woman, with large supplements of fear. One slip might find her alone, vulnerable and unprotected. The infinite ways in which she could be harmed were not specified, but Astha absorbed them through her skin, and ever after was drawn to the safe and secure.”This excellent opening paragraph just gets more excellent. Can't recommend enough.

For nearly 2000 years, nobody was reading a poewrful Emperor's painstakingly carved edicts about seeing the error of his violent expansionist ways, converting to BUddhism and wanting to rule through peaceful means. In the mid 19th Century,a bunch of soldiers, chemists, lawyers, administrators, out of sheer curiosity, spent years deciphering them, and his voice was heard again, and still it.THis is that story.

Unexpectedly thoughtful and poignant book about the paths our lives can take, and what gives one happiness. I did not at all like the ending and felt it undid all the excellent writing that went before, but I would still recommend this. Also it's a lot more real than books about women's mid life crises that seem to imply our only problem in our 40s is romance or a lack of it
