Really enjoyable audiobook. A gripping story, even though the world building was quite complex, it didn‘t detract from the plot or the characters for me. This definitely kept me hooked and I‘m looking forward to the next. I think audio is good because there‘s some unusual pronunciations and things which might get a bit much on the page.

The world is full of lovely people, Meira. I bet somewhere there is an Autumnian girl wanting to have skin the color of snow just as you want skin the color of earth....Someday our features will blend in, not stand out.

But I know why Mather wanted to believe the stone has magic: sometimes placing our belief in something bigger than ourselves helps us to get to a point where we can be enough on our own, magic or no magic.

'It hurts too much,' Mather says. Just that simple.
That makes me stop. I meet his eyes, a long, careful gaze. 'Someday it won't hurt.'
The promise we refugees always make one another---before going on missions, whenever people come back bleeding and hurt, whenever thing go badly and we're huddling together in terror. *We'll be better . . . someday.*

No matter what I want to do, no matter how well I lead or how hard I train, I won't be able to force life into frozen fields, or cure plagues, or feed strength into soldiers like I would if I could use the conduit. The Winterians would probably rather have a cruel queen than a king with *good intentions*...It doesn't matter what I would do with the magic, because leaders are valued for the wrong things.

It was a typical YA fantasy series. I found it interesting at times and snooze worthy at others. World building was okay and characters okay. So it was okay! 😅😂

Listened to the audiobook. I like the narrator. It took me a while to get into this one. But, once I did I enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Probably 30% through this audiobook and it's not as great as I'd hoped. Not sure if I should give up or not.

More ‘adolescent‘ sounding narrator and a few to many over used tropes. Normally I‘m a huge YA fantasy but this one was meh. The main character seemed to yell and rant about everything and put little thought into her actions, to the point of nearly all twists being ‘accidental‘ Kate Rudd is a favorite narrator for audiobooks but on this she was all frantic and yelling... ah well

Way better than what I thought it would be—I listened to the audiobook.

I did not like this book at all. The story felt flat, I didn't care about the characters or what was going to happen to them. It was too long for nothing. Nothing much happend in this book.
I don't even care enough to read the rest of the series.
So sorry if you liked this book. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

The ending was...WOW
So many twists and turns i didnt see coming. I loved it. Highly recommended

Somewhat predictable, but it was a fun read. For that reason, it‘s a 3-star pick for me. Will it stay on my shelf? Probably not. But I don‘t regret reading it.

I just can‘t say no when my son asks me to buy him books.

This book was a struggle for me to get through. I just wasn't interested in anything that was going on and felt no connection with any of the characters.

I enjoyed reading this. But it wasn't the most unique/original story, in fact it's a story I've read multiple times before just in a different world. But the world was interesting and unique. I also saw the "twist" coming from the very beginning because that plot is done so often. ?

That's why literature is so fascinating. It's always up for interpretation, and could be a hundred different things to a hundred different people. It's never the same thing twice

Het boek leest als een trein. De hoofdstukken zijn niet te lang en Sara zorgt ervoor dat je meteen in de wereld van Meira gezogen en beleefd alle emotionele achtbanen samen met haar. Verraad, vriendschap, liefde, loyaliteit, keuzes make en vooral je zelf vinden zijn thema‘s die terug komen in dit prachtige boek. Het is een mooie YA Fantasy met hele eigen personages, prachtige quotes en een hoofdpersonage om van te houden!
