“The glasses were so glittery, the quarters were so shiny, and the purse played such nice music, not to mention how excellent it was for storing school supplies.”

This story would be great to use for discussing consequences for unexpected behaviors at school and moving forward. I might use this story if a student is upset about “getting in trouble.”

Published 1996
This book is about a little girl, Lilly, who loves her purple plastic purse but gets it taken away at school. The vibrant illustrations are engaging to children and make the story more fun to read. There are many details in the pictures that enhance what is being described in the narration. The themes of following rules and accepting consequences are important and relatable for young readers.

This cute F story about a mouse, Lilly, by Kevin Henkes is a story that both teachers and students can relate to. I did my book book on this book, but I also did my author study on Kevin Henkes. Lilly loves her teacher Mr. Slinger until he does the meanest thing she could think of, he takes her new Purple Plastic Purse. Lily is furious, by the end of the book she realizes how her words have an impact on other people. #ucflae3414f17

KayleeC This would be a great book to utilize in a math lesson. https://kevinhenkes.com/wp-content/uploads/World-of-Kevin-Henkes-2011.pdf The link will take you to a teacher‘s guide of Kevin Henkes‘ mouse books. This book could support ESOL strategy 16, integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and UDL principle 2.3 support decoding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols. 7y
CaseyL You sound like an expert on Kevin Henkes! He‘s one of my favorite authors as well. I really like your idea about using this book in a math lesson! Great post! 7y

Lilly‘s Purple Plastic Purse is a wonderful story about an eccentric little girl who loves school and especially her teacher, Mr. Slinger. Lilly gets a cool new purse, jingly change, and sunglasses with a chain like Mr. Slinger‘s and simply cannot wait to show it off to her classmates, resulting in her getting them taken away. She is angry at first but soon realizes Mr. Slinger is right and makes amends with her favorite teacher. #ucflae3414f17

kenyanellie This book is the perfect RA. The activity I have found to go along with this is a character comparison between Lilly and Chrysanthemum. You could read these books together and fulfill UDL 3.1: activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 7: show students how to use graphic organizers and 9: teach notetaking strategies by creating the graphic organizer. This book has won the Zena Surtherland Award (edited) 7y
HNager This is a great book for an RA, the comparison chart would be great for the younger grades. 7y
DeannaT96 I love this book! I definitely agree that it would be a wonderful read aloud and I think the activity would help students understand the characters better! 7y

When you find a whole bunch of pens in the bottom of an old purse. Only one of them is dried up though, so I guess that‘s a victory.

A fabulous F book that comes from the award winning Kevin Henkes. Awesome vocabulary options, good lessons and themes featured (everyone has bad days) and promotes how being a teacher is rewarding & fun! Would be great as an interactive read or reading theater option. The author's website has a plethora of text supplements but my favorites are separated by each mouse character- Lilly's: http://www.kevinhenkes.com/book/lilly/ #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding I am impressed once again @Ashleywwolfe Wonderful post and excellent resource! MATH - money 💰 integration! 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding - thank you!! My husband, the engineer, is always looking if I incorporated #'s! Hahaha! 7y

My best friend has been living in Romania for awhile and told me that there is a trend for purses with a clear window so others can see the cover of the book you're carrying/reading. I think I want one?

this is so true! I chose this title because I use a purple backpack/purse. it's as heavy as carry-on luggage but I love it and it holds everything I need 📚😀👍

SeeJulieRead My purse/bag currently has two books in it! So, this is an important factor for me too ;) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahaha! Mine used to be will my kindle fit in there.... now I usually have book right on my phone, so as long as my phone fits I'm happy! 8y
Hooked_on_books Oh yeah, I definitely judge purses by whether or not a book will fit! 8y
