Open Heart | Elie Wiesel
8 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
Translated by Marion Wiesel A profoundly and unexpectedly intimate, deeply affecting summing up of his life so far, from one of the most cherished moral voices of our time. Eighty-two years old, facing emergency heart surgery and his own mortality, Elie Wiesel reflects back on his life. Emotions, images, faces and questions flash through his mind. His family before and during the unspeakable Event. The gifts of marriage and children and grandchildren that followed. In his writing, in his teaching, in his public life, has he done enough for memory and the survivors? His ongoing questioning of Godwhere has it led? Is there hope for mankind? The worlds tireless ambassador of tolerance and justice has given us this luminous account of hope and despair, an exploration of the love, regrets and abiding faith of a remarkable man.

This was short and beautiful: a significant Holocaust survivor's reflection on having had open-heart surgery at age 82 and the questions, fears, memories, and values it raised. He looks at whether he has done enough, his relationship with his father and son, his relationship with his own body, and desire for a future that might not come.

“Since God is, He is to be found in the questions as well as in the answers.”
“My life? I go on breathing from minute to minute, from prayer to prayer.”
In this quick read, Wiesel looks back over his life and contemplates life‘s meaning after his open heart surgery.

This was my first Elie Wiesel book and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was already familiar with him and his work.
This is a nice, short, sweet memoir about things that matter most in life.
