Mr. Timothy
Mr. Timothy: A Novel | Louis Bayard
11 posts | 11 read | 8 to read
Welcome to the world of a grown-up Timothy Cratchit, as created by the astonishing imagination of author Louis Bayard. Mr. Timothy Cratchit has just buried his father. He's also struggling to bury his past as a cripple and shed his financial ties to his benevolent "Uncle" Ebenezer by losing himself in the thick of London's underbelly. He boards at a brothel in exchange for teaching the mistress how to read and spends his nights dredging the Thames for dead bodies and the treasures in their pockets. Timothy's life takes a sharp turn when he discovers the bodies of two dead girls, each seared with the same cruel brand on the upper arm. The sight of their horror-struck faces compels Timothy to become the protector of another young girl, the enigmatic Philomela. Spurred on by the unwavering enthusiasm of a street-smart, fast-talking homeless boy who calls himself Colin the Melodious, Timothy soon finds that he's on the trail of something far worse -- and far more dangerous -- than an ordinary killer. This breathless flight through the teeming markets, shadowy passageways, and rolling brown fog of 1860s London is wrought with remarkable depth and intelligence, complete with surprising twists and extraordinary heart.

Bailedbailed

Here‘s my review for this book I didn‘t finish. This is also a #TeamBuddyRead but I‘m not going to count it towards the #wintergames and I‘m not going to do the #wordsearch on it.

I decided to start this book. I read A Christmas Carol which is a #TeamBuddyRead and this is also a #TeamBuddyRead. I listened to the first 3 chapters of this book and I don‘t like it but I‘m hoping it gets better. If not then I‘ll DNF it.

Mehso-so

The book gets off to a slow start & it takes a while for the pace to actually pick up. I found it worth sticking with though as the author paints a vivid picture of life in Victorian London with its deprivations & squalor.

The book deals with some dark subjects including paedophilia, human trafficking, & murder. I found some sections difficult to read due to the subject matter, & there were several scenes which became rather ridiculous. (Cont...)

OutsmartYourShelf The book deals with some dark subjects including paedophilia, human trafficking, & murder. I found some sections difficult to read due to the subject matter, & there were several scenes which became rather ridiculous, including the ending. Overall, a slow burner which covers some dark subjects, & for me, it ultimately fails at providing a main character to be invested in. 3⭐

Such is my imagination when reading I found one chapter in this book quite terrifying. Tiny Tim from A Christmas Carol is now 23, living in a Brothel and suffering from Erectile Disorder. So begins a tale of transporting very young girls for sex and Tim's involvement in ending the trade. Written in a Dickensian style there is humour & warmth but with sections that are annoyingly unbelievable. Having a satisfying ending it was a pleasure to read.

Tiny Tim Cratchit is all grown up in Victorian England and gets involved in uncovering a sinister crime ring, and introduces us to some delightful characters along the way. Be warned, it‘s very dark.

Jilly6183 PS, thanks for sending me this one in a swap last year @BookwormAHN ! I saved it for December and it was a great read. 4y

Tiny Tim turns detective as he navigates Victorian London. This one serves up a bit of darkness with your Christmastime reading. #adventrecommends @emilyrose_x

This is one of my favorite #historicalfiction novels. It is the story of Timothy Cratchit all grown up. It is beautifully written as are all of Louis Bayard's books. #reindeerreads @Jess7
