Quiet, Please: Dispatches from a Public Librarian
Quiet, Please: Dispatches from a Public Librarian | Scott Douglas
9 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
An unexpectedly raucous and illuminating memoir set in a Southern California public library. For most of us, librarians are the quiet people behind the desk, who, apart from the occasional "shush," vanish into the background. But in Quiet, Please, McSweeney's contributor Scott Douglas puts the quirky caretakers of our literature front and center. With a keen eye for the absurd and a Kesey-esque cast of characters (witness the librarian who is sure Thomas Pynchon is Julia Roberts's latest flame), Douglas takes us where few readers have gone before. Punctuated by his own highly subjective research into library history--from Andrew Carnegie's Gilded Age to today's Afghanistan--Douglas gives us a surprising (and sometimes hilarious) look at the lives which make up the social institution that is his library.

I started this last week before I got sick so I wanted to get it finished and returned. I‘m using it to fill a free space on #BookSpinBingo #Scarathlon #TeamHendrix

LiteraryinPA I hope you feel better! 3y

#CurrentlyReading. Should finish this lol memoir tonight. Can‘t wait to review.
#31bookpics - I‘ll try to do the photo challenge this month but historically I‘m bad at keeping up.

"I began to see it was the community, not the librarian, that was important to the library. Librarians were only as important as the community they inspired. If I was going to continue with this career, my job wouldn‘t be to protect information, it would be to bring the community together and inspire them to appreciate everything a library stands for" -- Scott Douglas, Quiet, Please: Dispatches From A Public Librarian

Working in a library I found this book fairly humorous but it still had a hard time holding my attention.

Pickpick

I enjoy reading anything relating to books and libraries. My full book nerd takes over when those two meet up and collide. I enjoyed Scott Douglas' memoir on his escapades with the Anaheim Library System. It was full of funny stories and real life issues and complexities

I'm not sure why I keep posting a monthly tbr since I inevitably have trouble sticking to it. Still, it motivates me to read, so I guess that's something! This is what I #wanttoreadindec, some Christmas books and a couple of books I didn't get to in November. I've also got some audiobooks on tap and a book of poetry. As usual, I think I've overdone it! #seasonsreadings2016

DeborahSmall I've almost finished Security, and I'm just sitting looking at this months TBR pile, my eyes straying around my bookshelves to see what I'm reading next! I'll have at least 2 not in my original TBR this month! #booknerdproblems 8y
Reviewsbylola I decided not to do a December TBR but in my head I think I want to tackle my backlog of BOTM and I have one Christmas book I plan to read. 8y

RohitSawant That's a great list! I have a vague christmassy list in mind, but I'm sure rereading A Christmas Carol is the only solid thing I'll accomplish on that front. 8y
DrexEdit I think it's great you have your reading planned out. I'm much too flighty in my reading choices and ruled too much by what's available from my library holds! 😊 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @MrBook Thanks! It will change, I'm sure, but I'm okay with that. 😉 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @DeborahSmall Isn't that always the way? I make a tbr stack, and then feel like reading something else or I buy another book that I just can't wait to read. And there go my plans! *sigh* 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @Reviewsbylola Yes, I saw your post about The Santa Clause Man and immediately stacked it. It looks so interesting! Looking forward to your review. ☺️ 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @rohit-sawant A Christmas Carol is a great read for this time of year! It never fails to get me in the mood for the holidays. Enjoy!🎄 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @DrexEdit I'm beginning to think I'm too flighty as well, but I persist! I don't seem to be able to get through as many print books as I do audio. And audiobooks are governed by availability from my library. So it's always a surprise! 8y
