I really wanted to read/listen to a nonfiction book related to the holiday and happened to find this by chance. It‘s about John Gluck and his charitable efforts in NYC that helped popularize both the holiday but more the iconic figure of Santa by playing the role of Santa‘s helper in NYC in the early 20th century. He just happened to defraud a number of folks in process. Interesting, but not mind-blowing stuff.

Not bad. An interesting story of the man who ignited Christmas in NYC, with a subplot of Boy Scouts included. There is some true crime, but not as much as I would like (or had expected, since I read this for a true-crime book club).

This is certainly a #fairytaleofnewyork. At least at first. Ok, maybe there‘s some fraud involved. But John Gluck still had a hand in making Christmas more merry for the needy children of NYC.

My husband and I slept in our new bed, in our new HOUSE, for the first time last night 🙌🏻 being that the bed is ridiculously comfortable, I accidentally slipped back in it this afternoon to read. Unfortunately, this book is not holding my attention. I am in a total reading slump at the moment, nothing sticks!!

The first book I ever added to my litsy tbr ?? This is the true account of John Duval Gluck Jr. "The Santa Claus Man", who in 1913 formed a group of volunteers to act on childrens unanswered letters to Santa and deliver the requested gifts. Although his organization was later shut down due to fraud, many children received gifts in the years that the group was active ?

This was a fascinating look not only at the charity John Gluck started that answered Santa's mail in NYC a hundred years ago, but also included a lot of history of the city. Perfect book for this time of year. 🎅🏼🎄

When children write letters to Santa and mail them - what happens to them? John Gluck decided to do something for these hopeful children in the early 1900's while living in NYC. He ended up in many schemes along with this one, earning the title of con-man. He was even investigated as a German spy during WWI. I appreciated the background information on many Christmas traditions that the author included.

My book club chose this nonfiction book for December. It's an account of John Gluck, a New York con man who decided to answer the letters to Santa Claus that poured into the post office every December. He ended up with an army of volunteers to help deliver gifts to the children. While writing this book, Alex Palmer throws in details about the origins of many Christmas traditions. If you can find it, I think you will enjoy. 🎄

So I said I wasn't going to do a December #TBR but I realized that I had a theme in mind so I am going to go for it. I declare December to be #BOTM catch-up month. 😂 once I receive my December box I will have 7 BOTM books unread so I plan on making a dent in that stack. And I am adding in a Christmas book for good measure. 🎅🏼
