My middle child is neurodivergent meaning he has a whole lot of diagnoses and most are neurological. We have been told that he‘s not on the Spectrum but has a lot of qualities. I found this book and read it so quick because it was so interesting. I could relate to so much of it because of my son. It was so nice though to read about the positives and that we shouldn‘t worry about him conforming. That it‘s ok to be different and unique

One thing unique about me is that I have a tendency to hear song lyrics everywhere in conversations. For example, at work, a supervisor could tell us that something should be easy, easy....I start singing The Commodores in my head. (I‘m easy like a Sunday morning)!! It‘s not an annoying constant occurrence, but there. People don‘t always appreciate my gift!! #uniquelyyou

Unique: in 6th grade I was a finalist in the annual state spelling bee in Minnesota 🐝 that was sponsored by by the Minneapolis Tribune. It was fun, but I did not advance to national competition which was in DC I think. To this day I am bothered by glaring spelling errors, but particularly in educational materials (eye roll)

One thing about me that I don't find in other people very often (at least in the US) is my intense fascination with Eurovision, and even more so, my ability to effortlessly remember each year's songs since I started watching in 2011. It's a weird party trick that doesn't serve me in any way, especially since most Americans don't even know what Eurovision is! #uniquelyyou

Something unique about me is that about 10 years ago I wrote two quilt books, 100 Good Wishes and Greetings from Brazil. It was lots of work but also lots of fun. The Brazil book was meant to be the first in a series, but then the publisher went out of business, and I never sought another one.

One of the things that makes me unique is that I am a military spouse of 20 years and I lived in South Korea for almost three of those. I‘ve also visited an amusement park and an outlet mall at the DMZ between North and South Korea.

My #uniquelyyou is that, when I was younger and cooler, I was in a Kula Shaker video for their song, Sound of Drums. I was at a gig jumping up and down and I noticed a video camera pointing at me and my friends, so I waved. Fast forward a few months, I‘m watching the chart show on a Saturday morning and, suddenly, there I am 😄

It is actually pretty hard to think of something that makes me unique, even though there are probably a hundred things to choose from.
However, something that surprises people about me, is I‘m really picky about condiments. I hate mayo, ketchup, mustard and the Danish remoulade 😐

One thing that is uniquely me is I love all things Microbiology especially Infectious microorganisms. I find it fascinating that how something so tiny can be some complex and cause us to get so sick. Weird I know!!!

I had such a good experience reading this book. Barry really writes this book filled with kindness and love. He wants people to see autism as a part of a person without implementing limitations or stereotypes. Each child is different and their development is an individual process. He calls for empathy, understanding and complex thinking. There is no black and white thinking when we are talking children development.

The Associated Press called it "A must-read for anyone touched by autism." I agree. This book made me think and rethink and reflect in a meaningful way. "Autism is not an illness. It's a different way of being human."
