The Diamond Age
The Diamond Age | Neal Stephenson
Cult author Neal Stephenson's unstoppable sci-fi classic The future is small. The future is nano . . . And who could be smaller or more insignificant than poor Little Nell - an orphan girl alone and adrift in a world of Confucian Law, Neo-Victorian values and warring nano-technology? Well, not quite alone. Because Nell has a friend, of sorts. A guide, a teacher, an armed and unarmed combat instructor, a book and a computer: the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is all these and much much more. It is illicit, magical, dangerous. And it isn't Nell's. It was stolen. And now some very powerful people want to get their hands on this highly desirable object. Nell is about to discover that the world can feel very small indeed . . . Neal Stephenson is the author of the three-volume historical epic 'The Baroque Cycle' (Quicksilver, The Confusion and The System of the World) as well as the novels Cryptonomicon, The Diamond Age (winner of a Hugo Award), Snow Crash, Zodiac, Anathem and Reamde. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

#bookspin for November and this was WILD. I really enjoyed the story of Nell & how the primer helped to shape her - some interesting concepts here

Tagged book,it's very Stephenson,so the answer to am i enjoying it is yes and no.As always, there are entire chapters that could be done away with that drag on the story-for instance, does every interaction Nell has with the Primer have to be documented in such detail?(1/2)

Vansa The world building is strange, living in Victorian times wasn't as romanticised as it is in this book. Also reading the excellent Tsarinas lost treasure, about Catherine the Great,The Dutch Golden age and also art collecting. 2y

#Weekendreads @Andrew65
Reading the tagged book, which is typical Stephenson- both interesting but also completely scientifically inexplicable world building.
Also reading the lovely, moving, gripping In the country of men by Hisham Matar

Andrew65 I need to read a book by this author. 2y

1. The tagged book “The Diamond Age”
2. A family friend gave it to me for my birthday when I was still in my early teens. I was more into fantasy than science fiction but she told me what rave reviews this book had gotten. I think I felt it was above my reading level and looking now it does have a lot of small print. I‘ve kept it with me but never actually started reading it! Maybe I‘ll read it next…?
3. “Akata Witch”

I didn‘t realize it had been so long since I last visited Litsy! October was a bit challenging on the health front, but thanks to new meds things are turning around! Audio-crafting has been keeping me sane. Haven‘t decided how I feel about this book or the narrator yet. Had to start over after about an hour because I had no idea what was going on. 😳

sprainedbrain Good to see you again! Hoping your health continues to improve. ❤️ 3y
Chrissyreadit I love your embroidery! My stitches are never that neat. 3y

The second I finished this book, I wanted to throw it across the room. That's not my typical response, even if I hate the book. And I don't hate some parts of the book. The parts involving Nell's story held my interest. Everything else was a chore to read. I will never read another Neal Stephenson novel for the same reason I don't read Brandon Sanderson, you can tell they were written by men. UGH!!!

Though I feel the concept of this book is very interesting in essence I have to say that it is just not for me and not the type of book that I would enjoy. However I do know that people who like to read Sci-fi, dystopian, or cyberpunk type books would definitely be interested in this one.

2BR02B I didn't like Snow Crash, but quite enjoyed Seveneves. Looking forward to finding out whether this will be a pick or a pan for me. 7y
BeansPage @2BR02B you never can tell with books. That's part of the allure for me. You never know what you're going to get until you open them and read them 😉 7y

Did an early birthday celebration with my family, and this was my book haul. The Elena Ferrante books were more of a passing along as my mom just finished them and she didn't have the first one to give to me, so I'll have to track it down before I can start. I'm a little intimidated by that series, not sure when I'll get to it...

Bostonmomx2 I've heard that series is fantastic but I couldn't get into the first one. Maybe I'll try again sometime 😊 8y

I really disliked this book the first time I tried reading it. I just couldn't do it. Or any sci-fi, really. I guess I just needed to be hit by lightening or something, because I'm grateful that I gave this book a #secondchance #BookLove17

Pruzy Loved Diamond Age, best Stephenson in my opinion! 8y

the difference between stupid and intelligent people—and this is true whether or not they are well-educated—is that intelligent people can handle subtlety. They are not baffled by ambiguous or even contradictory situations—in fact, they expect them and are apt to become suspicious when things seem overly straightforward.

Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon are the Neal Stephenson books from the 1990s that get the most attention, but The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, is my favorite. It is the quasi-Dickensian tale of Nell, a young street urchin who is educated via tablet and groomed to be a proper lady in a proto-Victorian future of nanotechnology run amok. Such a thrilling steampunk adventure. #photoadaynov16 #publishedinthe1990s

When in NYC... These days, when I goto NYC, I often spend hours and $$$ at The Strand, and then pack up to 5 crates of books out on the sidewalk before shipping them home (can't pack inside a mailing facility in NYC); but the very first time I visited The Strand, was to pick up a 1st Run/1st edition of 'The Diamond Age' - a book about a primer tablet with the ultimate in customer support (n.b. 15 years before the iPad was introduced) #getindie

Sampling The diamond age and reading Sleeping Giants tonight. Wasn't sure how I'd like the format of sleeping Giants but it's not bothering me too much yet.
