The Natural: A Novel | Bernard Malamud
7 posts | 17 read | 10 to read
Introduction by Kevin Baker The Natural, Bernard Malamud's first novel, published in 1952, is also the firstand some would say still the bestnovel ever written about baseball. In it Malamud, usually appreciated for his unerring portrayals of postwar Jewish life, took on very different materialthe story of a superbly gifted "natural" at play in the fields of the old daylight baseball eraand invested it with the hardscrabble poetry, at once grand and altogether believable, that runs through all his best work. Four decades later, Alfred Kazin's comment still holds true: "Malamud has done something whichnow that he has done it!looks as if we have been waiting for it all our lives. He has really raised the whole passion and craziness and fanaticism of baseball as a popular spectacle to its ordained place in mythology."

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Oh yes. I used to play soccer, basketball, and baseball, and also ran track a couple years during school. I still jog to stay in shape and like hiking and swimming. My sports watching has been whittled down now to soccer (mostly the English Premier League) and the NFL. But I'll occasionally watch just about anything.

2. The tagged book is the only one coming to mind right now.

The_Penniless_Author @RaeLovesToRead Competitive eating is very much a sport in the US. I don't see why you couldn't become the Michael Jordan of pizza snarfing. 😛🍕 7mo
RaeLovesToRead I'm on the wrong continent... 7mo
The_Penniless_Author @RaeLovesToRead I could have told you that. 😉 7mo

Readers find readers! Well, I already knew that about this wonderful lady. She‘s a server at a diner I often go to, but she hasn‘t been around for awhile. She took a fall and has finally recovered from her injury. She asked me which books I‘ve been reading since she last saw me a couple months ago. And she‘s a fan of “The Natural” movie—so maybe she‘ll pick up the book. 😁 ⚾️ #BookFriends

Libby1 I‘m glad she‘s feeling better. Hello to you, @MrBook ! 3y
KathyWheeler I love baseball movies in general, and The Natural is one of my favorites, but I‘ve never read the book. I‘ll have to check it out. This is a lovely picture! 3y

Bernard Malamud's first novel about Roy Hobbs and his bat WonderBoy. Based loosely on a case from around that era of a ballplayer being shot by a woman and having his career sidetracked. #FunPhotoFriday

When the July stifle drove her out of her room she appeared in the hotel lobby in black, her hair turned a lighter, golden shade as though some of the fire had burned out of it, and Roy was moved by her appearance.
