Mehso-so

A faraway planet, a deadline, "monsters", and the ramifications of colonialism.

The world set up and history was great, dealing with the lies colonizers tell later generations. But, this felt like half of a book. I can't even call the end a cliffhanger because the main story wasn't resolved.

There was a lot of hooking up in the middle of life and death situations, really too much. I did love the representation shown in this future. ?????

Finally got a library card. For some reason, I didn't think they'd let me without an AZ license, and then I finally went into the branch across the street from work. I spent way too long browsing the YA and romance sections. Typical.

Two of these are rereads, and 27 Hours has been on my tbr for a while. #lovemylibrary

27 Hours by Tristina Wright has been on my tbr since before it came out, and I can't wait to read it. It's about a group of queer teens who must battle to save their fellow humans on a planet called Sahara. The cover is gorgeous. Thank you for doing this #giveaway @Librarybelle ! #50k1k

jpmcwisemorgan I started but got distracted. It was nothing to do with the book, though. And there‘s a second coming soon I think. 7y
Librarybelle Thanks, @Bianca ! I stopped working with teens a few years ago, so I‘m out of the loop with YA books. Thank goodness for Litsy, because sometimes I just need to read a good YA novel! 7y
DGRachel I met her at a signing last year. I haven‘t read the book yet, but it‘s on my shelf. 7y

Some complicated feelings about this book:
Pros - all the queer teens (it was all the teens)
Cons - the colonization story at the core is a case of a classic sci-fi metaphor, but remains the sort that puts colonization in a fantastical realm. I get why it happens, but I also get the frustration people can have with it.

So, mixed feelings. Will definitely look into the next book when it comes out, though.

Tristina Wright (@TristinaWright on Twitter) tweeted the following: Book Pitch: [THE LAST TV SHOW YOU WATCHED] meets [THE LAST BOOK YOU READ] + [YOUR FAVORITE ANIME OR MANGA]

The responses have been amazing so I encourage you to find her on Twitter and check out her retweets. I also though some Littens might like to play along.

callielafleur Jeopardy meets The Stone Sky + Read or Die 7y
DGRachel I don‘t know any anime or manga, but the first part of my pitch would be Young Sheldon meets Discovering Tudor London. hmm... 7y
cobwebmoth The Grand Tour meets Poirot Investigates + Gankutsuou 7y
queerbookreader Dr. Pol meets Ghostsbusters + Fruits Basket. 😝 7y
jpmcwisemorgan @callielafleur @DGRachel @cobwebmoth @thequeerspiderwoman Thank y‘all for playing along. Mine is Mindhunter meets Down and Dirty (a Rhys Ford Book) + Yuri On Ice. 7y

I had a wonderful day yesterday at the Queen City Litsy meetup. Park City Books, local #indie bookstore is quaint and lovely. Amazing new author and book, 27 hours by Tristina Wright. Fabulous Litsywomen met and the lunch followed by discussion were refreshing and enlightening! Book people are the best people!

Thank you to Rachel for hosting!

What an awesome time! Thanks for introducing me to a local #indie Park Road Books, Rachel. I really enjoyed listening to and meeting Tristina Wright and getting a signed book. I had tons of fun at lunch with our NC/SC Litsy crew! I‘m sorry I had to duck out early.

If you haven‘t done a Litsy meetup in your area, I highly recommend doing one!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book has a beautifully diverse cast of characters, an intriguing setting, and a plot centered around colonialism and undoing the brainwashing that colonists‘ descendants tend to be raised under. It wasn‘t perfect - the writing feels rather “debut” - but I genuinely enjoyed 27 Hours and will definitely continue the series.
