Last Colony
Last Colony | John Scalzi
Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up.That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war."

Wonderful as always. An emotional investment, to be sure, but worth every moment. As I've come to expect from this series, there was conflict-based violence, loss that can't be taken back, but it makes for a more poignant message. And there are laughs. The banter is just as well crafted as the ethical debates or strategic planning. Happy about this arc's ending, excited to continue in the series, see what's next in this universe.

GondorGirl My partner started reading this series earlier this year and is really enjoying it. 🥰 14mo

Roanoke? You chose Roanoke for the name of your new colony? Are you HIGH? Why didn't you just build a plane and name it Icarus?! 🤦🏼‍♂️
Heavy on the foreshadowing eh, Scalzi?

This one is different from the other books in this universe, but I enjoyed it as well. It was a good, quick read.

Bk7 of May & Bk4 of #NutsInMay #readathon is done! I‘ve officially read more in almost 4 days than I did the first 2 weeks of this month🙌 The 3rd in the Old Man‘s War series, I loved it. Continues the story of John Perry & Jane Sagan, it had a lot of politics about the Galaxy & humanity‘s place in it. Lots of double dealing & back stabbing, unfortunately both very human characteristics. 4.5⭐️ #SeriesRead2021 #StackingTheSeries #PickYourPoison👇

RamsFan1963 If you continue the series, you'll find it turns more to politics and dealing with alien species, less action oriented than the first two books. I enjoyed the whole series, but some people missed the rip-roaring action of Old Man's War. 4y

Lizpixie @RamsFan1963 I quite enjoyed the politics, but then I‘m also a big reader of spy novels & thrillers which are full of it too. I‘ll definitely be continuing the series👍 4y

Scalzi is one of my fave sci-fi authors and this third book in his Old Man‘s War series didn‘t disappoint. The story has shifted from military sci-fi to a colony so it‘s a quieter tale but it still has all the things I like - politics, wry humour, and a love for humanity tempered with a distrust of organizations. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

These just keep getting better! #3 of this series did not disappoint. And the end pretty much insured that I am going to keep reading. 👍

Was dying to read more of the “Old Man‘s War” series, so I got them for cheap from Thriftbooks. I think there are even more, and I love it when you can add more stories to the world in which you have already invested.

#HumpDayPost
1. This weekend was all about dogs & books. (more below 👇🏻)
2. Nope, if I want reality, I‘ll read a paper or go outside.
3. I haven‘t had one yet, but several 4-star. I don‘t give out 5-stars easily. The tagged book was my most recent 5-Star (read Nov 2017).
4. BOTH! But I do love my iClips.
5. Catch-22 at one of the used bookstores I visited Saturday.

wanderinglynn I‘m dog sitting for a friend & Dexter wasn‘t too keen that she took his spot. On Saturday, I went to my calligraphy class. Then we had the NoVA meetup on Sunday and then I spent some quality time at 2 local used bookstores. And finally I did my postcards for #pcs3! 7y

1. tagged book - I read it last November - a fantastic ending to an incredible trilogy.
2. Haunt Couture and Ghosts Galore - I DNF because it was disappointing and ridiculous & so gave it 1 Star
3. Haha! Same as my user name

I just love John Scalzi‘s books. All of them! Read a bunch of stand-alones first, and now working my way through the Old Man‘s War series. So funny and engaging and surprisingly thought provoking for alien military fic! #jesshowreads2018

I just finished this one. I've done most of this series out of order unfortunately. So first of all read/listen to them in order. But this is a really good book. The ending was very satisfying!

I managed 5 out of 8 planned books, moving 2 to June, and putting one off until later. It was for a challenge that ends today. Not planned, but read were:
The Ghost and Mrs. McClure by Alice Kimberly
You Can't Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson
Star Wars 2015 #1 and #2 comics by Jason Aaron

I have no willpower. I had to download this last night immediately upon finishing The Ghost Brigades. I don't remember the last time I binged a series like this; I feel kind of giddy about it!

SaraFair I am late to the party on this series, but felling the same way you did!!! Just received the rest of the series from Thriftbooks. 6y
