Spider from Mars
Spider from Mars: My Life with Bowie | Woody Woodmansey
9 posts | 1 read | 23 to read
In January 2016, the unexpected death of David Bowie rocked the globe. For millions of people, he was an icon celebrated for his music, his film and theatrical roles, and his trendsetting influence on fashion and gender norms. But no one from her inner circle has told the story of how David Jonesa young folksinger, dancer, and aspiring mimebecame one of the most influential artists of our time. Drummer Woody Woodmansey is the last surviving member of Bowies band The Spiders from Mars which helped launch his Ziggy Stardust persona and made David Bowie a sensation. In this first memoir to follow Bowies passing, Spider from Mars reveals what it was like to be at the white-hot center of a stars self-creation. With never-before-told stories and never-before-seen photographs, Woodmansey offers details of the album sessions for The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and Aladdin Sane: the four albums that made Bowie a cult figure. And, as fame beckoned by eventually consumed Bowie, Woodmansey recalls the wild tours, eccentric characters, and rock n roll excess that eventually drove the band apart. A vivid and unique evocation of a transformative musical era and the enigmatic, visionary musician at the center of it, with a foreword by legendary music producer Tony Visconti and an afterword from Def Leppard's Joe Elliot, Spider from Mars is for everyone who values David Bowie, by one of the people who knew him best.

Four of Cups - The Archeon Tarot
#TarotTakeover @ErinSueMreads @Meaw_catlady
On dissatisfaction, or being given way more in the wine glass .. Woody often had to chase down The Spiders members, to go along with Bowie's wild fashion. 😄 Coping through comfort zones, and the missed opportunities from parting ways over hard differences; communication, habits, and money handling. -- I have The Starman calendar for this year, based on The Starman Tarot.

Pickpick

I enjoyed Woody's stories, as the iconic original drummer through the Ziggy Stardust 70's. The sudden fallout was a hard situation, as Bowie had struggles with Ziggy's fame becoming a lot to handle / drugs as a hidden issue. Sadly still, cancer battles would later take Spider members Mick & Trevor, before Bowie. -- Hard times, with the best of times, in all the detail of Woody's touring; still continuing on with his Holy Holy band! 🥁

TrishB Went to see Holy Holy- they were brilliant! 4y
SpiderCrafts @TrishB Very cool! 🙂 I'm looking forward to checking out more around Woody's band and music. 4y

One of my own beaded spiders. 😸 Woody's story is a great read on Bowie's developing Ziggy journey; through all the tours, but eventually coming to a difficult end for The Spiders From Mars. -- I'll have more to fully read on, as first become a Bowie fan myself around the Reality album of 2003.

A best show I've watched (on YouTube) and enjoyed was the 2002 A&E Live by Request, with a great timeline song variety. ⚡️

Trashcanman That's awesome. 4y

Now halfway through, at the Starman chapter. 💫 Great stories on how the early albums (The Man Who Sold The World - Hunky Dory) were made as a new crew band, while Bowie worked within new creative evolutions / coming up with Ziggy Stardust.

@Cinfhen @Marchpane From the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
This book chronicles the life of Woody Woodmansy and his journey from working club bands in Hull with his friend Mick Ronson to meeting David Bowie and becoming the Spiders From Mars. A fascinating insight into the 'Haddon Hall' early years of Bowies career 👇

TrishB and all the disappointments, anxieties and crises of confidence for both singer and band as they morphed from blues based folk rock into the glam rockers the world remembers. A must read. (Text from hubby at 8.20 this morning!) 7y

Leniverse I saw an interview with Woody talking about the book. A movie theatre showed it at the end of the Ziggy Stardust concert movie. Really seems like the Spiders got a raw deal. 😕 7y

#TBRtemptation post! (Let the TBR extravaganza begin 😆!) This memoir just came out this month, so this is fresh and making the rounds across the world right now. Woody is the drummer and last surviving member of Bowie's original band, The Spiders From Mars. He writes about being in the middle of the culture icon's self-creation and gives us a front-row seat into how Bowie became the man we all know & admire. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

TrishB Hubby just finished this last night (he's a massive Bowie fan) and said it was great stuff 😀👍 7y
monkeygirlsmama Love me some Bowie so I'd definitely consider picking this one up. 7y
