Reporting Always: Writings from The New Yorker | Lillian Ross
5 posts | 10 to read
From the inimitable New Yorker journalist Lillian Rossa collection of her most luminous New Yorker pieces (Entertainment Weekly, grade: A). A staff writer for The New Yorker since 1945, Lillian Ross is one of the few journalists who worked for both the magazines founding editor, Harold Ross, and its current editor, David Remnick. She made journalistic history by pioneering the kind of novelistic nonfiction that inspired later work (The New York Times). Reporting Always is a collection of Rosss iconic New Yorker profiles and Talk of the Town pieces that spans forty years. This glorious collection by a master of the form (Susan Orlean) brings the reader into the hotel rooms of Ernest Hemingway, John Huston, and Charlie Chaplin; Robin Williamss living room and movie set; Harry Winstons office; the tennis court with John McEnroe; Ellen Barkins New York City home, the crosstown bus with upper east side school children; and into the lives of other famous, and not so famous, individuals. Millennials would do well to study Ross and to study her closely, says Lena Dunham. Whether reading for pleasure or to learn about the craft, Reporting Always is a joy for readers of all ages.

#bookreview from #hiselderliness Two weeks worth as I was allowed to see him to clean his house today. He wanted me to wear a mask - not cos he thought I might be carrying it - he was worried he might give it to me after visiting the hospital for an injection a few days ago 💕
Reviews - An Island to Oneself: very interesting. (Followed by an explanation of getting on and off islands) Grandma Gatewood‘s Walk: strong woman, weak story. Rocket Boys⬇️

Trashcanman Hi Paula 🤗❤🤗 4y
Centique Cont. That was a good one. The kid was a pain in the arse to the neighbours though (big grin). Always setting off rockets in the back yard. (His Elderliness would def like to build rockets in the back yard). Shepherds Life: that was interesting in so far as I don‘t know much about sheep. Especially in the snow. They know where to go and hide behind a stone wall so they don‘t get covered. Smart. 4y
Centique @Trashcanman hi george! How are you doing? 💕 4y

Trashcanman @Centique I'm breathing, how are you? 4y
Centique @Trashcanman I‘m breathing too. When I ask my dad how he is, he says “Still here”. Which is a viable answer for any of us - worth gold to have you still here my friend. 4y
Cinfhen So happy to have a report from #HisElderliness 🥰 Rocket Boys was made into a film and I heard it was phenomenal. Thanks for reporting back 😘😘 4y
Centique @Cinfhen 😘 have to find the film and see if it‘s ok for my 10yo. He loves space stuff. 4y
Cinfhen Lmk... that would be great if you could watch the film with the family 💜 4y
Cathythoughts What a sweetheart about the mask ❤️ 4y
batsy I love his comments about Rocket Boys! 😆 And yes, so sweet about the mask 💕 4y
Reggie No matter how old you are, you‘re still his kid.💕Your dad‘s great! 4y
Centique @Reggie thank you so much. It‘s weird it‘s taken me to be grown up myself to fully appreciate him. 💕 4y
TheAromaofBooks The film for Rocket Boys is October Sky & it's quite good - I think language is the main thing in it that may be an issue for younger viewers. My grandparents grew up the “next holler over“ (according to Grandma) from Hickham & felt like the portrayal of coal mining life was very well presented, esp. that sense of it being almost impossible to think of doing anything other than mining. Has your dad read All Creatures Great & Small? Seems like ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the kind of story he may enjoy!! 4y
RohitSawant This is such a lovely post! 💜 4y
Centique @TheAromaofBooks thanks for the info about the movie - it sounds so good. I can‘t remember if Dad has read ACGAS - I will get it for him and see what he thinks. Thanks for the recc 😊👍 4y
Centique @rohit-sawant thanks Rohit 😘 4y

#bookreport @Cinfhen Well the thing I most wanted to show you was the gorgeous walk we went on yesterday - the sun came out right as we were exploring rockpools. I do love a rockpool - don‘t you @rockpools ?😍 End of winter here, so a nice feeling to get outside again.
3 books - loved The Hours, Affair of the Mysterious Letter was rollicking fun and ⬇️

Centique the third book is full of anecdotes from an Alaskan small town. I‘ve been reading a chapter each night before bed to chill out - will post a review shortly. 4y
LeahBergen How pretty! 4y
Lindy This makes me want the ocean. 💙 4y

Centique @Lindy it certainly makes lockdown bearable. The beaches were busy but you just walk around a few cliffs and you can be quite solitary 😍 4y
Centique @LeahBergen thank you lovely. The rockpools in this spot are deep enough that large fish can sometimes get stuck there in an outgoing tide. Easy fishing for those in the know (except it‘s a bit of an adventure to get to this spot anyhow) 4y
batsy Thanks for the gorgeous view. Makes me feel like I'm there... 😍 4y
Cinfhen Oh WOW, that photo is STUNNING XXX Thanks so much for sharing 🙌🏻I hope you print and hang that photo 💜 4y
Cathythoughts Beautiful walk ❤️ 4y
Centique @batsy @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen thank you lovely ladies 😘 4y
kspenmoll Thank you for sharing your walk- so beautiful!!!!! 4y

#bookreport @Cinfhen

This might be the best reading week I had all year. Two 5 star books and two v good short reads. I went off track from my forecast - found myself at an event with spare time and No Book 😳. Libby to the rescue - I downloaded Elderly Lady and The Hate U Give.
My god THUG is good. Have to post a review!
Have not seen #hiselderliness due to not wanting to give him my cold. Update to come!

Cinfhen Sorry you‘re still fighting that cold - take care. I‘m trying to decide when I should attempt to read this one 👉🏾 I need to be in the right mood 5y
TrishB I loved THUG too 👍🏻 5y
CarolynM Another fan of THUG here. I did it on audio which really made it come alive. 5y

Centique @Cinfhen yes I agree! It‘s a bit messy that one, lots of threads not tying together, so it needs patience. If you‘re not feeling it, you‘re not feeling it 😘 5y
Centique @CarolynM ohhh I bet it was! 5y
Reggie OMG, I loved THUG. That was one of my top ten from the last decade. So topical and funny and just had some great growing up scenes. 5y
Centique @Reggie I know right? And what a skill she has, to put me in a neighbourhood on the other side of the world, and make me hear, feel, see and smell it. I‘m dazzled by AT 🤩🤩 5y
Rissreads I loved Thug too! ❤️ 5y

#TBRtemptation post! Ross's career at the "The New Yorker" was from 1945-2005, and she worked for both founding editor Harold Ross & current one Remnick, a rarity. She invented the entertainment profile. She was the first to write journalism in "scenes". Her work is among the most studied by prospective journalists. Her style was witty, humorous, intimate, & engaging. Her interviews are historic. Worth checking out! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

zsuzsanna_reads Thanks, I've not heard of this one before!! 8y
