Practical Demonkeeping
Practical Demonkeeping | Christopher Moore
In Christopher Moore's ingenious debut novel, we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature. The good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "roads" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets. Behind the fake Tudor faade of Pine Cove, California, Catch sees a four-star buffet. Travis, on the other hand, thinks he sees a way of ridding himself of his toothy traveling companion. The winos, neo-pagans, and deadbeat Lotharios of Pine Cove, meanwhile, have other ideas. And none of them is quite prepared when all hell breaks loose.

4.3⭐️ hilariously horrifying as only Christopher Moore can do. This really had a great cast of characters that included a demon and a jinn. We are in the mood to laugh with just a touch of fear, this is definitely one that I would recommend. Stay tune for part two.

This was recommended by a friend for its quick wit and topics of demons, djinn, and quirky side stories. It was very reminiscent of Good Omens at times with the large amount of varying characters all chasing the same major goal, but most of those characters were unlikeable. At the same time they were also very entertaining so it was enjoyable to keep reading.

I really want to like this author but I can‘t seem to get into him. Maybe I haven‘t read the right book by him yet. This was funny in some parts but in others I just felt like it fell flat.

wanderinglynn I overall like Christopher Moore. But his books—some are great, some are a bit uneven. Try 6y
Victoriahoperose @wanderinglynn thanks for the recommendation! I do actually have this book on my bookshelf at home and I‘ve heard good things so I‘m hoping it‘ll be the one that I like! 6y
Patchshank I don't really like anything from his Pine Grove series. I did really enjoy A Dirty Job. The sequel was disappointing. I don't think anything else I've read by him really compares to it. I've been trying to read Sacre Bleu, but I've been having trouble getting into it. I'm only a few chapters in so I'm going to keep trying for now. 6y

Travis was born in 1900, yet he has not aged since 1919, because he accidentally called up a demon from hell named Catch as his servant, presumably forever. Ever since then, Travis has been trying to get rid of Catch.

When travelling at least with one or two books. I have to admit this one wasn't as good as I expected it. Maybe it's the German translation. #christophermoore #derkleinedaemonenberater #demons #practicaldemonkeeping

sherryvdh I didn't like it as much as some of his others either. 7y
MariaW @sherryvdh That was the first one of his books I've read. I've seen so many good reviews, I'm a bit disappointed now. 🤔 (edited) 7y
sherryvdh @MariaW I've read 4-5 of his books so far, and I have to say that one was my least favourite. I liked Bloodsucking Fiends and Fool better. His books are generally pretty funny and entertaining. 7y

MariaW @BookNAround I definitely need to check out others of his books. I will start with those ones you all recommended. 7y

Christopher Moore never lets me down, and this book was no exception. Great absurd story, and even absurder characters. I love the cross-over of characters between series. Moore is da bomb 🤘🏽

mcipher It's the best when you read a new one if his and encounter old friends from other books! 8y

I have a bad habit of not really reading book blurbs, which really makes me wonder just how I make the decision to read something. In this case I know it was because I liked the author and was looking for a immediately available audio for my commute. It's generally not a good sign when you ask yourself "just how old was he when he wrote this". Definitely NOT in the same league as his later works. I may give the 2nd a try as it came 7 years later

"Catch was a demon of the twenty-seventh order. In the hierarchy of hell this put him far below the archdemons like Mammon, master of avarice, but far above the blue-collar demons like Arrrgg, who was responsible for leeching the styrofoam taste into take-out coffee."

I may have gone overboard at the pre-inventory sale at Recycled Books today. Can you blame me though?

Another of my favorites - it should be obvious by now that I love books that are magical, absurd, hilarious and totally improbable. I also like thrillers about reprehensible people doing bad things, but that's another story. Literally.

Gezemice Moore is one of my favorite authors! Soon be reading Fluke. 8y
Texasblues I think that's one that I've missed thus far. I adore him! 8y
