On top of the Yorkshire Moors, in an isolated spot carved out of a barren landscape, lies White Windows, a house of shadows and secrets. Here lives Marcus Twentyman, a hard-drinking but sensitive man, and his sister, the brisk widow, Hester. When runaway Annaleigh first meets the Twentymans, their offer of employment and lodgings seems a blessing. Only later does she discover the truth. But by then she is already in the middle of a web of darkness and intrigue, where murder seems the only possible means of escape

I felt like a bit of Yorkshire gothicky-ness. 😉

I‘m about 100 pages in and it‘s atmospherically FUN.

Sleepswithbooks Pretty cover. 4y
MsMelissa I‘m stacking this one 👍🏻 4y
inthegreensandblues Sounds fantastic and that cover!! 😍 4y

Palimpsest Looks great, I‘ve stacked it. Also, I love Laura Purcell‘s novels. After I finish Magic Lessons I‘m reading The Corset (called The Poison Thread here). I‘m just holding out a little longer because I loved Bone China so much! 4y
BiblioLitten I only have The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. I hope it‘s not part of a book series 4y
saresmoore This sounds great! Is it scary at all? 4y
LeahBergen @Stacypatrice @inthegreensandblues It is a pretty cover, isn‘t it? 😊 4y
LeahBergen @Book_Fiend_Melissa I‘m enjoying it so far. 😊 4y
LeahBergen @Palimpsest I really like Laura Purcell, too. I‘ve read The Silent Companions and The Corset and have been saving Bone China. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @BiblioLitten No, you‘re safe. All three of her novels are stand-alone. 😊 4y
LeahBergen @saresmoore No, it‘s not scary at all actually. 😄 4y
Cathythoughts Oh great ! I didn‘t know about Bone China ... I did enjoy The Companions 4y
youneverarrived Ohh I have this one waiting to be read 🤍 4y
saresmoore Oh, good. The world is plenty frightening enough for me right now! 😅 4y

Riveting. I think I held my breath for two days. I had to force myself to put it down last night. But I‘m not so sure about that ending... #bookreview #netgalley

Just finished so I can start a new book for #24in48!

BekaReid The cover looks so intriguing! 6y

Love the setting (Yorkshire moors). The writing is not terrible. But the second half of the book was just not good. Lots of plot holes and the worst part for me, an adorer of Charlotte Brontë and her masterpiece Jane Eyre, which is both honest and beautiful, was the anachronistic dialogue and behavior of the main characters, especially Annaleigh. Frustrating and disappointing.

#firstbookof2018 ... and it was a good one... (I think it was @emilyhaldi I saw mention it?🤔)
Atmospheric and creepy at times, this has a definite Bronte-esque vibe with it‘s Yorkshire moors setting. Perfect book to curl up with during this unusually cold week we are having in South Florida! Brrrrrrr!

LeahBergen I‘ve had this stacked for ages. 👍🏻 6y
emilyhaldi So glad you likes this!! It was a great dark, moody, Victorian read. Ideal for a cozy winter day 🖤 6y
FlowerFairy In Florida, too. Crazy weather! Icicles on the palm trees is just WRONG. LOL 6y

Listed as a great choice for fans of Fingersmith or Jane Eyre...Annaleigh flees her home in London and finds herself in the remote countryside of England at the mysterious White Windows house. She soon becomes drawn to the master of the house, Marcus Twentyman, but slowly realizes all might not be as she first believed and the intrigue of the Manor begins to unfold... A fun, macabre read for a gloomy day 💀

emilyhaldi @LeahBergen lol, yes probably 😂 that was in April 6y
Mdargusch There were two copies of this in Naples in our condo. Did we read this because it‘s not ringing a bell ? @Reviewsbylola and @emilyhaldi 6y
Reviewsbylola 😂😂😂 Yes, in April. @Mdargusch 6y
emilyhaldi @Mdargusch lol, this really didn't leave an impression on you at all huh! 6y
Mdargusch Sorry. I️ mean it‘s your review that doesn‘t ring a bell. 6y
rubyslippersreads I want to read this, but that doll head is creeping me out! 😱 6y
emilyhaldi Lol @rubyslippersreads I ❤️ that doll head! It's my fav! But most people think it's super creepy 😆😆 definitely give this book a try - it's a dark one. 6y

I really enjoyed this. It‘s gothic, creepy and unsentimental in a way that both payed homage to classics, like Jane Eyre, and updated the conventions for a modern, less romantic twist. I also loved that Annaleigh is smart, resourceful and unapologetically angry. It‘s a lovely take on classic themes full of complex, engaging characters. I definitely recommend it.

emilyhaldi Ooh fun! My family read this for book club earlier this year and I haven‘t seen anyone else mention it on Litsy before 😁 6y
MadCatRamble @emilyhaldi It was a random find when I was in the UK earlier this year! I‘m happy I snagged it! 6y

A creepy and fast-paced read. The ending is bittersweet for me, but I was pleased overall. Book 1 down on our family vacation book club! 🖤🌚🏝

I loved the historical setting of this book, along with the creepy Gothic feel. The story builds up slowly in the first half and then really takes off in the second half. This was our first read for our vacation family book club and so far seems to be a hit. Just one more sister needs to finish!

Lmstraubie Okay, I just half to ask...I know you and @emilyhaldi are sisters, but who else makes up your family bunch?? (I just love the family connections on here)☺ 7y
Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch is my mom and @Meredith3 is another sister. My third sister thinks she is too cool for litsy apparently. 😂 @Lmstraubie 7y

This a dark and stormy, gothic tale in the vein of Jane Eyre or Rebecca. We read this in our family vacation book club and it's a quick read so we are already on to the next book. @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @Meredith3

A dark, gothic thriller. Fun to read for our family vacation book club! The characters in this book are all a little creepy but I found the storyline and conclusion to be satisfying.
