Pride of Baghdad
Pride of Baghdad | Brian K. Vaughan
22 posts | 40 read | 12 to read
The startlingly original look at life on the streets of Baghdad during the Iraq War inspired by true events arrives in a stunning new softcover edition. In this provocative graphic novel, superstar comics writer Brian K. Vaughan examines life on the streets of war-torn Iraq. In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning of liberation: Can it be given, or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity? This moving graphic novel is inspired by true events. This new Deluxe Edition hardcover presents the original graphic novel, plus developmental art and more.

I'm a big fan of Brian K. Vaughn. This is definitely not the usual graphic novel he creates, but it was great.

A pride of lions escapes the zoo during the bombing of Baghdad. The story is told from the lion's point of view as they try to figure out what is happening around them. This is based on a true event.

If animals being hurt/killed bothers you, avoid this book.

TheAromaofBooks The artwork looks fantastic. 3y
BarbaraBB Great choice. What a subject and POV. Super interesting! 3y
Librarybelle I agree with @TheAromaofBooks - the artwork does look fantastic! 3y

I read Pride of Bagdad a while back, and it seemed like a perfect pick for the #BookHunt prompt for a non human main character, even if I am a little late. I was tempted to pick books with humanoids, but felt like it was almost cheating. The book follows a pride of lions escaped from a zoo during wat time. Not a happy ending, though.

I don‘t usually read graphic novels. This was my first and it came from a recommendation. I was so pleasantly surprised with the depth of it and the emotion it elicited. Loved it!

Inspired by actual events, this is the story of four lions who escaped from the Baghdad zoo after a US bombing raid in 2003. Told from the point of view of the lions, Vaughan asks what it means to be free as well as the costs one pays for freedom. The writing is sharp, as you would expect from Vaughan, & the artwork is top notch. Gut wrenching, harrowing in its depiction of war, & visually stunning, this is another great book from Vaughan.

This was not at all what I was expecting. Based on a true story from the Iraq war, and told from the point of view of four lions who escape from the zoo they are confined in when it is bombed. It is sad and beautifully illustrated, and a really intriguing take on the consequences of war.

Is that a horizon? This comic is a gorgeous and generous allegory of freedom, impact, and perspectives set in Iraq after the American bombings of Baghdad. Four lions from the zoo escape and show us a modern day fable for identifying a perceived enemy.

This is a fascinating story and one I never heard of. It's so easy to justify things like war because of politics and there's so much controversy about bombing because of the human casualties but we never think of the effect on other living things. It's rather heartbreaking that we live in a time where this is a real story and not a complete fictional creation.

I'm gonna take a better look at the horizon tomorrow...

•A provocative look into a city devastated by war via unique & original perspectives
•Emotionally riveting
•Savage (graphically violent) & unrestrained

Based on the true story of a pride of lions who escape from the Baghdad zoo during the American bombing of 2003. The art is beautiful and brutal, while the story is compelling and heartbreaking. I've always wanted to use this in the classroom as a supplemental material illustrating how war displaces families and ruins lives, but I've never had the chance to work it in. Regardless, it's an excellent read! #setinthemiddleeast #maybookflowers

So this one was kind of manipulative and made me feel feelings. 😭 It tells the story of four lions who escape the Baghdad Zoo after the bombing and destruction of the city. Based on true events but obviously some imagination is used for the lions' dialogue and thoughts. I really liked how this was a war story and showed the darkness of any innocent involved in a war-torn area. However, some caveats in the spoiler below.

Zelma I really, really, really could have done without the lion gang rape scene in the first few pages. I think the point could have been made without it. 7y
Kristy_K I completely agree with you about that scene. 7y

Brian K. Vaughan is definitely my favorite graphic novel author. He infuses relationships, politics, and culture into every one of his stories and they are all simply amazing. Pride of Baghdad takes the true story of 4 lions who escaped the Baghdad Zoo in 2003, personifying the lions with human thoughts and emotions, making them all the more relatable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What is the true cost of freedom. Growing up and going to college has changed my perception of this thought. As I have been reading more graphic novels I have found the importance of sight and words intertwined together to tell a story.

EricQiao I adore this graphic novel! More tragic than Bambi. The metaphor is something we should all contemplate on. 7y

Short but moving. Don't know what it is with me and animal books. This got to me almost as much as Grant Morrison's We3.

Neat tale which wavers in tone but does enough to land the dismount with a punch to the gut.
