With this, his first collection of stories, Raymond Carver breathed new life into the American short story. Carver shows us the humor and tragedy that dwell in the hearts of ordinary people; his stories are the classics of our time.

#24in48 #spinepoetry challenge @24in48

I'm no poet but I did enjoy picking these from my shelves to make a quick challenge post. It reminded me to add some poetry into my #24in48 reading today, too—perhaps some Carver. He's always worth reading & rereading.

This happens when you get your paycheck and two independent bookstores and one book sale get in your way.

This is where I'm going tomorrow night. A local pub hosts 2 hours of quiet reading! No phones or talking, just beer, books and camaraderie...with no interactions. I CAN'T WAIT :) Introverts unite (separately).

Alfoster That sounds so cool!! 8y
TheCanuckReader What book shall I take...lol. How about "how to sell insurance to people at a pub"? That should keep the talkers away! 8y

I discovered this story collection when I was 14. I had just seen Robert Altman's film "Short Cuts" that was based on a number of Carver's stories. Talk about a gateway drug. This was a portal that opened up the entire world of literature and cinema goddammit. Carver's prose is minimal but it cuts deep. "Bicycles, Muscles, Cigarets" is my favorite story. #booktober #shortstories

mauveandrosysky Whoaaa. I had no idea Short Cuts was based on Carver. I haven't seen it in probably a decade. Must re-watch now. 8y
