15 posts
Every March, millions of Americans have their minds fixated on one thing: the NCAA mens basketball tournament. From bracket pools in offices worldwide to students on campuses in all corners of the nation, March Madness takes the country by storm. From the First Four to the Final Four, collegiate heavyweights such as Duke and North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan, Texas and UCLA mix it up with Cinderella underdogs such as VCU, George Mason, and Penn, reminding the world that anything is possible. The magic of the tournament and the purity of the amateur game keep fans coming back year after year. From the birth of the tournament in 1939 to the most recent on-court drama, The Ultimate Book of March Madness explores the storiesboth the legendary and the forgottenbehind each years tournament, and author Tom Hager selects the 100 greatest games from tournament history. With insight from dozens of players and coaches, this book reveals the tension, strategy, and even the behind-the-scenes humor of the tournaments history. Featuring a unique blend of storytelling, quotes, vintage photographs, and game descriptions, The Ultimate Book of March Madness provides the average hoops fan with a deeper understanding of the history of the Final Four, while providing true fanatics with memorable and amazing stories theyve never heard before.

My March was not very productive. You would think with all the time off, I would have more read, but not the case.

The Reading Challenge States are for Feb and Mar.

My tally for the #MarchUnshelfing #challenge is in! I read 22 books in March, 4 of which unfortunately don‘t count as they‘re ebooks, but I also gave away to my dad 8 books and have a box of 15 more to donate to my local hospital. My top three reads of March are Angels Flight by Michael Connolly, The Guest List by Lucy Foley & Patriot Games by Tom Clancy. Honorable mention to Heartstopper coz it was so adorable♥️How‘s your March look?

Clwojick Woohoooooo! Way to go! ♥️🔥 4y

What a weird month, reading-wise and otherwise. I read 22 books, 19 of which were for #MiddleGradeMarch and most happened in the last three days. I had two DNFs, both my #bookspin and #doublespin for the month. I made next to no progress on my How the Mind Works project, as I had no powers of concentration most of the month. Maybe April will be better all around. 😄🤷🏻‍♀️

Suet624 At least you pulled two books off your TBR. 😂😂 4y
ravenlee @Suet624 exactly. I‘m done with them one way or another! They went into the box for the used book store, whenever I can get there again. By that time they‘ll be able to restock a good portion of their shelves just with mine! 4y

So I‘m stumped...
My team could still win #Marchmadness ...
But even if they do, I‘ll only be #9 without reading points. So LOTS of people can beat me out... if they read.
So do I keep reading my #marchmadnesschallenge picks, or do I let this one go?🤔
I might have to wait to see if Nova pulls it off. If they don‘t, I‘m out for sure.
I‘m not sure if I‘m pulling for them or not 🤣

emilyhaldi I think I‘m out of the race no matter how much I read 😏 6y
Sweettartlaura @emilyhaldi that sucks... 😕 6y

So these are my picks that made it out of Round One. I own several, & already got some from the library. But I might have to do some subbing/swapping - some are very hard to get my hands on without buying them. And since I‘m on a book-buying ban, that won‘t work.
On to the REAL challenge 😏

Ok, @JenP ...
Now that Round 1 is done, I can/should read all my winners from this round (or suitable substitutes) to maximize additional points, correct?
#marchmadnesschallenge

JenP Yes. Now that round one is over you at least know all the books that will get you additional points. So any book you picked to win that DID win, will give you extra reading points. I posted a score card link (in my feed) that can help you track your extra reading points. 6y

Ok, @JenP ... do I HAVE these points now for good? Or do I only get them if I read all the corresponding winning books? I know we‘re not done with the games, but I‘m trying to strategize my reading. And pick up the right things from the library 😉📚🏀

RachLovesTV I think those are all points you have banked, and reading will add to that. Also, how am I in first right now? 😱😆 6y
RachLovesTV Though I see now that my possible points is lower - because Arizona has already been taken out. I will relish my first place position for now, as I'm sure it won't last. 😅 6y
Sweettartlaura @RachLovesTV That‘s you in 1st? Congrats!!! But I‘m coming for ya 😏. With Buffalo 😜🏀 6y
RachLovesTV Haha that is very likely!! I was reading on the CBS app that you get bonus points equal to the winning team's seed, so you could potentially clean up with Buffalo if they keep winning! 6y
JenP Yes, you will get the full prediction points then will add reading points to whatever your final CBS score is/will be. 6y

Whoo hoo! Just won my first bracket 🙌🏻🏀

#marchmadnesschallenge

Kalalalatja I‘m following it closely as well! So far, my predictions have been correct 🤞 6y
RachLovesTV Yay! Me too! 6y
emilyhaldi I had both of those games as upsets 😏 6y
See All 11 Comments
RachLovesTV I did mess up a little on my bracket, though. I forgot we were also getting points based on the actual bracket, not just what we read. Some of my picks were based on what I wanted to read more, and I figured it didn't matter if I wasn't planning on reading the higher ranked book. Whoops! 😅 Oh well! 6y
Sweettartlaura @Kalalalatja Awesome! How are you doing now? 6y
Sweettartlaura @emilyhaldi I tried for the upset with Wright St over TN - didn‘t work out 😕. But I did pick Buffalo, & that sounds like the biggest upset so far. How are you doing? 6y
Sweettartlaura @RachLovesTV Yeah I made some picks based on personal preference, too. I‘m still not sure on how the scoring works in the long run. I‘ve got a lot of wins for today, but I think that means I have a lot of books to read, too. 6y
RachLovesTV I *think* you get points just for your bracket, even if you don't read your winners, and then you get addition points for reading as well. And my day was going pretty well... until Buffalo beat Arizona. 😭 Not only is that my BFF's alma mater, It was my pick to go to the final 4 from that quadrant. 6y
Kalalalatja @Sweettartlaura not that great 😅 Two teams I had predicted to win two games got kicked out, and the same for two teams I had down for winning one game 👎 6y
Sweettartlaura @Kalalalatja Well there is still tomorrow- plenty of time for things to get shuffled up again 😬 6y
Kalalalatja Hopefully! 🤞🤞🤞 6y

Here are my bracket picks for #Marchmadness
I have Beartown ... ahem... Villanova ... for the win.
#marchmadnesschallenge
@JenP

And off I go ⛹🏻‍♀️📚🏀

JenP Good luck. Go Nova! 6y
Sweettartlaura @JenP Question about DNFs: are they allowed? If so, is there a minimum amount to read to still count it? 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura hmm, I hadn‘t thought about that. I think to get the points for a book you have to finish it since you are competing with others to get the grand prize. But let me give it some thought and I‘ll get back to you 6y
See All 14 Comments
Sweettartlaura @JenP hmmm... I don‘t DNF much, but that could be a problem ... what if you get stuck on one for a while because it‘s not for you? 6y
Sweettartlaura @JenP What if you did something like ... 2 points for each complete book/1 for a DNF after 25%? To mirror regular scoring vs free throw line🤔 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura the scoring is more complicated than that because some books get more points if they advance further. I think the answer is that DNF books don‘t get points. If you are hating a book, we can consider letting you stop and sub a different book (another by the same author, one of the bottom 4 that didn‘t make the bracket, so similar genre, similar length). 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura you‘ll still get the prediction points for that book but not the reading points unless you actually complete a book. 6y
Sweettartlaura @JenP Ok, got it! 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura but hopefully you love the ones you read 😬 6y
Sweettartlaura Well, @Jenp I can always pass if I don‘t. But there are a couple picks I made based more on basketball stats than whether or not I want to read it 😏 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura yeah, I did that too but I‘m hoping to get enough points that I won‘t need to read the ones I‘m less interested in reading. And thankfully my winner pick was also a book I want to read. 6y
Sweettartlaura @JenP just to be clear... I get the most points for books I picked that advance. But I still get points for reading a pick that doesn‘t, correct? Ultimately if I could squeeze in 32 books in the next 2 months, they would all count for something, right? 6y
JenP @Sweettartlaura no, I‘ll be posting the score card very soon along with point breakdown. I‘ll tag you. 6y
Sweettartlaura @JenP Perfect - thanks! And thanks for doing this. I wasn‘t really doing challenges this year, but this seems like too much fun to pass up. 6y

I hope to get through most of these and a few more (Kindle + some books that are on their way, + whatever I decide I'd rather read) in March. Because why be realistic when you can be enthusiastic? 😂 Although I am realistic about Ulysses. I'll still be reading that in April, and May, and so on. And Vanity Fair is an 8 week readalong. So you see, my #MarchTBR is totally doable. 😆

Once again we are hosting a March Madness bookish tournament on our blog. We‘ll be giving away several prizes to winners. Books are nominated by participants, ranked, then paired with basketball teams. Participants then create brackets and earn points by how well their book/team does over the tournament. Read more about it here:

https://thereadersroom.org/2018/02/11/bookish-march-madness-challenge/

Whoever nominates the winning book gets $25

JenP We will be doing all the main Challenge updates on the blog but I will post updates on Litsy too! Hope you all join. It was a blast last year! 6y
