The Farm in the Green Mountains
The Farm in the Green Mountains | Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer
13 posts | 4 read | 28 to read
A charming return-to-the-land memoir of a family finding a new homehalfway across the world. Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer and her husband, the playwright Carl Zuckmayer, lived at the heart of intellectual life in Weimar Germany, counting among their circle Stefan Zweig, Alma Mahler, and Bertolt Brecht. After Carls work fell afoul of the Nazis, however, the couple and their two daughters were forced to flee Europe. Los Angeles didnt suit them and neither did New York, but then a chance stroll in the Vermont woods led them to Backwoods Farm, the eighteenth-century house where they would live for the next five years. In Europe, the Zuckmayers were accustomed to servants; in Vermont, they found themselves joyfully building chicken coops and refereeing fights between unruly ducks. Despite the endless work a new farm required and brutal winters that triggered bouts of melancholy, Alice discovered that in America she had found her native land. And her generous, surprising, and witty memoir, a bestseller in postwar Germany, has all the charm of a love story with a happy ending.

Pretty stoked to have a few days off, a combo of "It's the end of the fiscal year, so take these leave days or lose them" + holiday + birthday. Plans are pretty minimal, but top of the list at the moment is finishing my current reads - first this, then Doctor Thorne.

Tamra Enjoy your downtime. ☺️ 1y
Ruthiella Sweet! Enjoy. 😃 1y
mabell Sounds wonderful! Have a lovely birthday! 1y

The tagged book is so enjoyable and funny! 😆 I‘m trying to picture a mentally ill duck, and an anti social duck 😅

If you have high level of stress like me, this book provides you with a wonderful escape. Occasional giggles and laughters to follow

😍😍😍 Anyone‘s living in Vermont? What a lovely place! I just started this memoir, and am compelled to Google an image of the farm. I‘m a big city girl, but who can refuse such heaven?

Soubhiville I grew up there, but I‘m a city girl now too. My dad still lives there, so at least I get to go visit 😊❤️ 4y
sisilia @Soubhiville How lovely! ❤️ 4y

Suet624 I live in Vermont. Have for 40+ years. Great place. I‘ve tagged some of my posts with #Vermont. Also @saresmoore gave me this book years ago and I LOVE it. Have read it several times. 4y
Suet624 Also I just looked and most of my tagged posts seem to be missing. 🙄 4y
sisilia @Suet624 It‘s now in my places-to-visit list 💓 It looks like a wonderful place. The book is enjoyable so far; a 5⭐️ potential 4y
Suet624 If you come, let me know. I have room! 4y
AmyG @Soubhiville Oh wow....I knew your Dad lived there but I didn‘t realize you grew up there! We skied there for 20 years and our daughter lived there for 12 years. I miss it now that I live in CO. @Suet624 Do you live in Bulington now? (edited) 4y
Suet624 @AmyG I still live near Stowe but because I've been working in Burlington I've been staying with friends and family in Burlington during the week. My second son just bought a house in Burlington four houses away from his twin brother so Burlington will definitely end up being my home away from home. :) 4y
AmyG @Suet624 That is so sweet they will live near each other....and very convenient for you! 4y
Suet624 @AmyG ❤️❤️❤️ 4y
Soubhiville @AmyG my dad is in Springfield, central on the Connecticut River. That‘s where I graduated high school. 😊 I also lived in Barre for a bit, near Montpelier. 4y
AmyG @Soubhiville Wow. I just love VT. I am trying to talk my husband to maybe visiting NJ this fall and driving to VT for a long weekend. I miss it. 4y
Nute Golly! It‘s beautiful! 4y
zuzia I went to graduate school in Brattleboro, VT. Loved the fall, spring, and summer seasons there. Winters there, not as much. :) 4y
sisilia @zuzia I‘m reading a chapter about winter. Yeah, I prefer the other seasons, too 😆 4y

I was a virgin NYRBer until @saresmoore sent me this lovely book. I read it a year ago and was captivated by the memoir of a European woman fleeing the war and arriving in Vermont. Her stories and life events were so interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

vivastory I haven't heard of this one before, it sounds fantastic though! 6y
Mtroiano I loved this one! 6y

sisilia Adding this to my wishlist 😃 6y
Suet624 @sisilia I‘m surprised you don‘t have this already. 😁 6y
sisilia @Suet624 Hahaha I‘m still the baby in #NYRBClassics world. I own 77 and have read only 17; most that I own are those ‘basic‘ titles 😄 (edited) 6y

Just started this beauty and I‘m already sucked in. I‘m so glad my husband got me a subscription to the NYRB Classics book club a couple of years ago. The selections are all 100% books I would not have chosen myself but I have loved (or at least really liked) them all. The beautiful covers are just the icing on the donut! #nyrb

emilyhaldi I‘ve loved every NYRB that I‘ve ever picked up! 6y

Pickpick

Herdan-Zuckmayer‘s family were forced to flee Germany in the 1940‘s. They settled for 5 years in Vermont. She highlights the differences between the way Europeans and Americans live, outlines the joy and despair of living on a farm, writes of her love of the Dartmouth College library, talks about telephone party lines, the war years, and brings the past to life. Many thanks to @saresmoore for a book I knew nothing about. I loved it. #MountTBR 5

Suet624 @NHLibrarian, you might be particularly interested in the Dartmouth College history and library section. 7y
saresmoore Great review, Sue! I‘m so glad you liked it! 7y

Oh my! Their gloomy desire to die. 😂😂

Dolly 😬 7y
saresmoore The same could be said for parents and children! Although, in addition to antibiotics, most children are medicated with sugar and interactive screens. (Wow, I must be feeling a bit cynical today!) 7y

“Owner had left some chairs, tables, and writing desks in the house, and the rest I ordered on the installment plan from Sears and Roebuck, that fabulous mail-order house for everything that one needs in life.”

I remember looking through old copies of this catalog and they did, in fact, sell anything and everything. Pre-Amazon.

saresmoore Ah, the days of the Pre-Amazon era... 7y
Jeg @Suet624 In the 50s I was a child in NH. My mum used to get the Sears Catalogue. She would store the old ones in the basement. I spent hours flipping through them. 7y
Suet624 @Jeg Yes! Me too! And I‘d pick one thing out of each page that I would buy. Of course we had no money so it was all play but I loved that catalog. 7y

Thoughts about a Vermont winter. Written in 1949, I‘d have to say I feel the same way in 2018.

PurpleyPumpkin I feel the same about Canadian winters. ❄️ 7y
MayJasper Sad 7y
Suet624 @PurpleyPumpkin Brrrr.... earlier in the book a farmhand who moves to Alaska writes to say the winters are milder in Alaska. 😁 7y

Suet624 @MayJasper In the past farmers and homesteaders didn‘t have much time to play in the snow. Now lots of vermonters spend time doing winter sports. I mostly read and wish it could be a bit warmer. It‘s a beautiful place to live and so I stay 😁 7y
MayJasper Vermont sounds beautiful. The writing made me feel sad. 7y
Jeg I think that is why my Aussie mum was glad to bring us all back after ten years in NH. I love visiting the New England States but don‘t think I could do a winter . As a kid it was great fun though. 7y
Suet624 @Jeg oh, your mom was smart. 😁. I think you‘re right that kids have the best time with the weather. With the right clothes you can play outside for hours, skiing, sledding and skating. 7y
